Obama Pushes Two-State Solution in Israeli Independence Day Message

A day after waiving restrictions on aid to the Palestinian Authority, President Obama issued a statement marking the “momentous day” 64 years ago that the United States became the first country in the world to recognize the State of Israel.

“Ours is a unique relationship founded on an unbreakable commitment to Israel’s security, and anchored by our common interests and deeply held values,” Obama said. “These values continue to enlighten and guide our efforts as we work with Israel, as well as with others in the region, to confront shared challenges and to achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on a two-state solution that will usher in a future of peace, security, and dignity for the people of Israel and its neighbors.”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent out a warmer independence greeting last night “on behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States” — in which she didn’t specifically push a two-state solution.

“Our relationship grows stronger every day as we work to promote regional security, create new economic partnerships, increase two-way trade and broaden our energy cooperation. We are steadfast in our commitment to Israel’s security, which is a cornerstone of our foreign policy in the Middle East,” Clinton said.

“And we will continue to work with you and your neighbors to achieve the shared goal of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the Middle East. Congratulations and best wishes for peace and prosperity in the years to come.”

The head of the conservative Republican Study Committee included Israel’s right to defense in his congratulatory statement from the caucus.

“I hope this day reminds every American about our important bond of friendship with Israel,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio). “The people of Israel desire to live their lives in peace and freedom, just like we do. And like us, they fiercely defend themselves when attacked. Considering the challenges she has faced, sixty-four years of Israeli independence is a remarkable achievement. Let us work and pray for countless more years to come.”
