Happy New Year, Abdel-Halim Khaddam

January 1, 2006 - 12:54 pm - by Roger L Simon

Syria is no place to be a whistle blower:

Syrian legislators have demanded that treason and corruption charges be brought against former vice president Abel-Halim Khaddam for implicating Syria’s president in the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri.

During a televised parliamentary session on Saturday, the MPs voted unanimously to put Khaddam on trial for comments he made during an interview in Paris with Al-Arabiya network. The former vice president is living in exile in France.

Khaddam accused President Bashar Assad of threatening Hariri months before he was killed in a bomb attack.

I’m sure Mr. Khaddam doesn’t need anybody telling him to watch his back and not get into any unmarked cars.

Meanwhile, wouldn’t it be interesting to know which banks contain the Assad family accounts?

UPDATE: Interesting analysis from the JPost.

As opposed to say, the US wehre whistleblowers (especially ones blowing the whistles on the Bush administration) are slammed as traitors and made the subject of Department of Justice investigations.
