    Disturbing yes, but also hopeful, glass half full guy that I am. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. The genie is out of the bottle and a thousand other cliches, sayings, and witticisms. Steyn said it the other day, my friend yama-arashi and his friends have said it before and been attacked for saying it, but it is deja vu all over again. You thought the Soviet Union crumbled fast. “China” is not a country but an Asian Europe and it is about to break up. Unless the U.S. and others rescue it. (Of course, in Asia, where time has a slightly different meaning, “about” might be some time off– Just to leave my friends a little wiggle room. But on the other hand things have become very Westernized, and the crumbling of the Soviet Union was televised so everyone has the script in their head, so then again…)

    Gilded Bamboo Curtain!!! Indeed an excellent metaphor.

    China can’t be described as communist anymore. After embrasing international trade what remains is a dictatorial one party system, ruled by the elite. History tells us that supressive autocracies don’t cling to power for great periods of time. Mind you no experiement the size of China with a rising middle class has ever been attempted. Uranari has a point that it is only a matter of time. The difficult question is how much time.

    With open borders and relatively free travel, the Chinese are exposed to outside influence and then return back to China. Something is bound to give…
