The World in Review

Now it’s Sunni vs Shia — in Afghanistan!: ” A suicide bomber struck a crowd of Shiite worshippers who packed a Kabul mosque Tuesday to mark a holy day, killing at least 56 people, and a second bombing in another city killed four more Shiites. They were the first major sectarian assaults since the fall of the Taliban a decade ago.  A Pakistan-based militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.”

Maybe Kabul doesn’t mind violence: Given this expose from the Independent; “Revealed: Karzai’s secret plans to cling on to power in Afghanistan — Western intelligence report claims President is hoping to change constitution and rule indefinitely”.

Mr Karzai, it is claimed, wants to emulate Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin who, similarly blocked from holding office for a third consecutive term, handed the Presidency to Dmitri Medvedev in 2008. Mr Putin is seeking a return to the Kremlin in March.

Gee after all that Western tutelage and the man Karzai wants to imitate isn’t Barack Obama but Vladimir Putin. Go figure.

Why Should Pakistan the Holy Be Causing Trouble Anywhere?
“US warned Pakistan not to play ‘Russian roulette’ with India … The United States had a flaming big red warning for Islamabad after the Pakistan-supported 2008 Mumbai attacks which killed 166 people, including six Americans.” You mean Pakistan attacked India and killed Americans? Next thing you know Washington will accuse it of harboring Osama Bin Laden. Pakistan is an ally, you know the kind on whom you can depend to protect the logistical routes to Afghanistan.

Maybe Afghanistan will sell itself to China: “Afghanistan opened bids Tuesday on billions of dollars worth of copper and gold deposits in four areas of the country that together are roughly half the size of the Grand Canyon.” There’ also a trillion dollars in lithium. Maybe China and Russia will get it. After all, if America ever benefits from it, it would be WRONG. No war for batteries! No war for gold! But if the Chinese get it, why that’s OK.

US Sources Confirm RQ-170 Crashed in Iran: Says Aviation Week. The drone was on a CIA mission. “CIA officials have declined to comment” even though satellite surveillance confirmed “the location of the wreckage before the Iranians retrieved it.” This is only right and proper to maintain the integrity of a clandestine project.

Saudi Arabia May Join the Nuclear Arms Race: The Kingdom may get the bomb if Iran or Israel gets the bomb, which it won’t because the President is working for a world without nucear weapons. Related search “Global Zero”.

MSNBC says an ‘Arab Spring’ is breaking out in Russia: “Police and protesters clashed Tuesday on a central Moscow square as people tried to hold a second day of demonstrations against alleged vote fraud in Russia’s parliamentary elections. Protesters in the city of St. Petersburg also broke through police lines … Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reiterated U.S. suggestions that Sunday’s election was neither free nor fair. Russia’s Foreign Ministry later branded U.S. criticism “unacceptable.” Meanwhile, Republican Senator John McCain offered Putin a warning on Twitter: ‘Dear Vlad, The Arab Spring is coming to a neighborhood near you.'” Coming soon, an “Arab Spring” in Europe, Korea, China and maybe even Washington DC.

Chicken fat-fuel to power U.S. warships in 2012 games: Washington understands what is really important.

The U.S. military, in the largest ever government purchase of biofuel, bought a batch of fuel made from chicken fat and algae that will be burned by the Navy in war games next year, said officials.

The Defense Logistics Agency purchased 450,000 gallons of fuel from Dynamic Fuels LLC, a Louisiana-based venture owned by Tyson Foods Inc and Syntroleum Corp, which makes biofuel from used cooking oil, and from California-based Solazyme Inc, which makes fuel from algae.

This as the US Navy is set to fly its jets with used cooking oil. With typical foresight, the administration is pushing Green jobs, drilling bans, pipeline bans and solar panels over traditional but unimportant activities like national defense. The unbelievers may complain that “any government big enough to outlaw a Happy Meal is too big to defend the country” but surely that can’t be true. We are in the best of hands.

$56 Billion Later, Airport Security Is Junk: “The Feds should be less concerned with what gels your aunt puts in her carry-on, and more concerned about lax screening for terrorist sympathizers among the airlines’ own work force. They should be worried about terrorists shipping their bombs in air cargo. And they should be worried about terrorists shooting or bombing airports without ever crossing the security gates.” No. Can’t do that. It would enrage the unions and raise charges of discrimination and profiling. The truth is that we are in the best of hands.
