Holier Than Thou, But It’s OK

August 31, 2010 - 7:01 pm - by Richard Fernandez

Glenn Beck has traveled to Italy to talk about God. He hired 200 professional models to attend his event and lectured them on the superiority of Christianity to any other religion. He told the models that they were far more respected in Red States than they were in Italy.

Just kidding. You can relax. It was actually Khadaffy, not Glenn Beck. And the religion being praised was Islam, not Christianity.  So it’s all right. Even the Italians said so.

Khadaffy shouldn’t be blamed one bit. He’s fighting his corner and fighting it well. If he can get away with doing this stuff it is entirely because of a the self-hating, groveling gatekeepers who’ve forgotten the lock and which side is in or out.

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.
Brutus and Caesar: what should be in that ‘Caesar’?
Why should that name be sounded more than yours?
Write them together, yours is as fair a name;
Sound them, it doth become the mouth as well;
Weigh them, it is as heavy; conjure with ‘em,
Brutus will start a spirit as soon as Caesar.
Now, in the names of all the gods at once,
Upon what meat doth this our Caesar feed,
That he is grown so great?

Anyone who can (and does!) hire 200 professional models to listen to a lecture has a certain amount of respect from me in any case.

  2. 2. Forgotten Man

Khadaffy makes all of Monty Python seem normal But if he can hire 200 models maybe there is hope for him yet.

  3. 3. Marie Claude

But Khadafi, while playing the pastor Robertson part, didn’t forget his agendas : he traded his help to contain the illegals that borrow Lybia paths for Europe € 5 billions, otherwise expect that Europe will become Africa.

If someone (Khadaffy or any old imam) wants to hire people to attend his lectures, then:

    a) it is a desperate cry for help from Islam, that feels the need to hire an audience to its proselytizing, and

    b) I fail to see what the big problem is, or where the “gatekeepers” failed. Italy has more inherent freedom of religion than, say, Libya does–which explicitly includes kooks gathering up listeners by whatever incentives work and telling them about this or that god.

Now, were this to happen in Saudi Arabia, and it really be Glenn Beck, then we could say the gatekeepers had failed, because their job in SA is expressly to stamp out any competing Word of God.

Khadaffy could have rounded up homeless and given them sandwiches for all I care. The fact he used models just shows he has more money than sense, and a bit of class.

Sure, laugh it off. Another bit of Europe bites the dust. And as MC points out, pays tribute, too. Only Jews and conservatives wish it were not so.

Did the models meet PC diversity standards (some gals, some guys, some transgender, different races, etc.)?

Oooh, oohh, did he bring his body-guard babes? Yeah, they cover their heads, not with scarves but with really jaunty military style hats, and they wear these jump suit uniforms that make Mr. K (or is it Mr. Q?) look like a regular James Bond villain.

It could also be an act of rubbing it in the West’s faces and staking a claim to civilizational superiority. Using another nation’s citizens as a propaganda prop against that nation unchallenged certainly qualifies. You may have heard that Saudi Arabia has also tried to get into this game of one-upsmanship, in their case by taking a leaf from Beijing and the late, unlamented USSR with grand endeavors previously unprecedented in scale. The Soviets had Sputnik and Tsar Bomba (among many other examples). The PRC had the Three Gorges Dam and the $40B Beijing Olympics. And now the Saudis have Abraj al Bait, an enormous hotel complex next to Mecca’s Grand Mosque, whose centerpiece is “merely” the world’s second-tallest building, but one that is crowned by a gargantuan four-sided clock 140 ft in diameter, which dwarfs those of both Big Ben (23 ft across) and the Allen-Bradley clock tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (the erstwhile world-record holder at just over 40 ft across).

Why build such a huge clock? It seems that Mecca has designs on replacing Greenwich, England as the new international time standard, and they earnestly believe that the Abraj clock is a step in that direction. (To which the obvious rejoinder is, if it were simply a matter of building a bigger clock, Milwaukee should have been the standardbearer since 1962 when the Allen-Bradley clock was built.) It is also worth noting that the Abraj complex, including the clock, was built by none other than the Saudi Binladin Group.

Symbols matter. At least they matter to some. Those who laugh at Potemkin villages should remember how many of the pre-World War 2 British intelligensia were hoodwinked by them. The 19th century Raj had not yet found pomp and ceremony distasteful. They overawed the locals with grand spectacles, bombastic titles and above all, a manner of effortless superiority. Perhaps Europeans, never having had the colonial experience in relatively modern times, with exception of the German occupation, don’t know what it is like to be treated like a “native”.

Well it’s like this. You are constantly praising the other person’s culture, making room for his cultural symbols. You are continuously apologizing for your religion as the superstition of mere rustics. You are made to stamp on your own traditions and deities. It becomes cool to wear articles of clothing of the conquering civilization. If you have a perfectly good English name you make haste to change it something fashionably Arabic, or ethnic at least. Finally you let a potentate parade women recruited from the local population in a public place. And then you say, “it’s good, I like it”.

What you don’t realize is that, far from obtaining the respect of your betters, you have actually earned his eternal contempt. He regards you as subhuman. He has a special term for you, like “whore” if you are the First Lady of France. And once again you bob your head and say, “it’s good, I like it”. And you cast your eyes around and notice who’s not bowing. Is that Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck over there? For shame! They are bigots. Mere rubes. For nothing is more sophisticated than to slavishly ape the manners of the Other.

That’s what it feels like to be conquered. The feeling is novel to Europe; perhaps even strange. Don’t worry. They’ll get used to it.

I see the social phenomenon that created the Obama administration as one that seeks to de-Americanize America. This “fundamental transformation” isn’t merely to make America like the mythical “rest of the world” but more importantly to subjugate it.

The colonialist mentality has never left the United States, and is an expression of the rootless nature of many immigrants. If anything, the independence of the USA masks a deep self-loathing found even among our founding fathers. George Washington avidly imitated the latest English fashions. Thomas Jefferson beautified the University of Virginia in the vain hope of attracting European professors. Gilded age merchant princes and princesses married titled nobility from England. During the twentieth century, black American music became so popular among white Americans that it not only led to widespread contempt toward white American culture, but it also obscured other indigenous musical traditions. The presumption of ignorance among ordinary Americans has been a staple of foreign language programs for generations.

In other words, a colonial mentality has been part of the American cultural landscape for generations. Yet now, it has gotten worse. We now have a president who was elected on the basis of an inferiority complex of those who voted for him. He talks down to them because he knows it is what they want. When an audience is masochistic and desirous of contempt, especially if it means they can act like “ghetto snobs”, it should be no surprise if they become enthralled by an arrogant jackass who kicks them in the teeth.

I think far too many Americans act like women who get attracted to men who abuse them while ignoring any man who wouldn’t give her a black eye. That must change. If Barack Obama didn’t exist, masochistic social climbers from academe would have needed to invent him. Change is necessary. America must change so that our electorate never feels the insane need to vote for somebody like Barack Obama again. If America does not change, I worry that Americans will vote for one narcissistic idiot after another, each of whom combines an exotic pedigree with prestigious credentials filled with fluff.

It’s amazing, isn’t it? Barack Obama has convinced me that change is necessary, change away from the social conditions that led to his presidency, that is.

wretchard, I think you misread European history and culture-memory. Christianity barely conquered the pagans before the millenium went through five hundred years of feudal warfare, then with the Protestant Reformation could be swept up with different faiths as each new wave of conquest washed over them. In many ways the colonial periods were only more of the same. Europe wasn’t spreading anything they didn’t know well from both sides, and we needn’t go back as far as Rome to support the thesis.

  16. Alexis,
I hope you will spot me a slight quibble or 2. In fairness to Washington I should note that if he imitated English fashions prior to 1776 it would have been because he was indeed a patriotic Englishman. Independence didn’t happen on a whim but because a lot of the Founding Fathers really felt they had no choice. In his case the real question would be whether he still followed such fashions at the end of the Revolution. I seem to recall the answer was no. Jefferson’s desire to attract European professors would probably have been on a par with the more successful desire to attract English engineers(Isaac Asimov had an interesting article on that in one of the past issues of Fantasy & Science-Fiction which unfortunately is too far in the past for me to cite from memory. >_<), which is to say that at the time European technology was somewhat ahead of American technology and the Americans felt it wise to close that gap. Not exactly my notion of self-loathing.

As for Crazy Khadaffy, he's opened himself for mockery with that one. And we would be unwise to turn it down. Islam is really such a lousy religion that the only way they can get people to listen to their sermons is to bribe them at 80 Euros an hour?O_O

Did they perhaps get extra for pretending to stay awake? O_O

Just goes to show how badly Islam sucks! ^_~

“You are continuously apologizing for your religion as the superstition of mere rustics. You are made to stamp on your own traditions and deities.”

The specific loathing is aimed towards all but the most emasculated and exsanguinated forms of Christianity and/or Judaism. I doubt very much that any other religion than Christianity or Judaism would be treated this way by the elite in the media or education industry. The dichotomy in reaction between your fictitious example of Beck vs the real-world example of Khadafy is just the latest evidence that this is so.

Although the the secular elites and their wannabes nearly always make noises about how they have contempt for all religions because of their superstitious aspects, in practice they focus on and complain about only one or possibly two. The amount of venom directed specifically towards devout Christians and Jews gives lie to those noises. It’s Judeo-Christianity specifically that draws their bigotry.

The tripwire for disgust with leftist Western elites is set so much more in hair trigger mode for authentic Christianity and Judaism than it is for any other religion, even Islam, that one is compelled to examine why this should be so. Perhaps it is as you say, that this is the attitude of perceived conquered to a perceived conqueror. I would say that’s a factor, but I would also point out that this attitude preceded 9/11 and the most recent thrust of Islamicism to attempt world dominance.

This bigotry and the taking of any opportunity and factoid to try and smash Judeo-Christian thought may be inflamed by defeatism but has its genesis elsewhere. This is merely the latest twist of expression of a prejudice that has been around for a while.

When I was a kid, my Mom (being a typical middle class mom and wife) bought “The Happy Hooker” and all the other prostitute memoirs, and she hid them in the closet. When my parents were out, I (being a typical 15 year old) snuck into their room and read the books.

I never did understand the psychology of the “Johns” who paid the hookers to crap on, urinate on, and otherwise degrade them, but I’m certain their psychology and that of modern Europe derive from similar sources.

The Judeo-Christian Tradition hollows the heart of modern liberalism. The mind cannot hold the thought that “God created the heaven and the earth” and that men of superior intellect/will can shape the nature of other human beings at the same time.

To be a man you must refuse to be a god. The First Commandment is the essence of the Judeo-Christian Tradition. And toxic to modern liberalism/marxism which can exist only in a world that denies the immutability of human nature.

The American Republic, at least as I imagined it, is gone. The Idea of the American Republic is very much alive, however, and it does not include a permanent lord and master class.

  22. 23. Moniker

That specific loathing of Christianity and Judaism that predates the perceived jihad came from Marxism/Leninism, did it not? The goal being to make belief in Marxism the supreme faith. For the old leftists, those faiths were the ones they found on the ground they were trying to conquer. They attempted the same destruction of indigenous faith in Muslim lands.

Which is not to say that before the advent of the Communists were no unbelievers. They are and were always around.

The attack is in progress, called immigration. What is pathetic is Italy’s attempt to buy off Qhadaffy. . . as if he will now help stem the flow. What a vain hope that is.

Good sir I beg to differ.

The Vatican is it’s own country, please do not confuse them with Italy (even though they are entirely inside Rome). The Vatican has it’s own problems, but whoring for Islam doesn’t appear to be one of them. As far as scheduling the Food-Fight For Famine Relief (reminds me of all those Big-Wigs flying private jets to Bali to discuss AGW in air-conditioned comfort, but some stuff you just can’t parody) I am sure that you could get the Coluseum if you grease the right wheels.

Qaddafi gets away with this because he is not a “white man” and the liberals don’t believe that a white man can hold such a man responsible for anything except agreeing with a white man which is inexcusable. Most folks who have religion carry their god around in their back pocket and every so often they will whip god outa there pocket and beat the hell out of someone who they consider a “sinner” or “apostate” untyil their superiority and their gods superiority has been established, then if the targetted individual (rarely do they alone face more than one sinner) submits to their’s and their gods power the sinner will be invited to a more public god beating at their church come sunday if not then the sinner will be listed by all the fine religous filled folks of the church and “SHUNNED” until they leave or submit.
This happens in all religions, some shun you, some excommunicate you and some cut your head off but all use their god as a club to beat non believers or someone the righteous have found lacking in respect for them and their god.

No, the ONLY way the MDM will leave is on the shockwave of a JDAM. Pretending that the people will raise up and remove the MDM is a delaying tactic by those that oppose the use of violence to remove the mullahs. Since only violence will get them out of the palace, that means those claiming a revolutionb is possible are actually supporting the Mad Dog Mullahs and helping them stay in power.

HEP-T’s comment is the perfect example of why it is almost impossible to discuss religion in an historical context. Most people are either unwilling or unable to distinguish individual or even group actions from whatever religion, or any other attribute, that individual or group might identify with.

If some TV evangelist turns out to be a crook (not unusual) then either all Christians are crooks, or Christianity itself foments crooks. How many times have we heard the Tim McVeigh equivalency? My favorite ignorance to behold in all its splendor is the Crusades…

I have no problem saying that Islam encourages murder, rape and robbery because that is what its wisdom documents tell us are its virtues, among other more conventional types.

Fact is that not many people, including maybe most of the people who identify as Christians, do not know very much about it.

  37. 38. anton

    37. Peter Boston;
“My favorite ignorance to behold in all its splendor is the Crusades…”

I recently had exactly that conversation with a recent college graduate. She was unable to understand the persistant interest that Christianity has in the Middle East. She kept asking why the Crusaders wanted the “Muslim lands..” I had to explain to her that the lands of the Middle east were Christian (and Zoroastrian)lands for many centuries before some khat-chewing caravan robber had a “vision” and came up with a religious excuse for murder, rape and pillage. Fortunately we were at my house and I have a neat little book printed by Penguins that shows graphically the rise and fall of nations and empires. She simply had no idea that there was an “Arab Conquest”.

The most disturbing thing about the whole episode is that she had graduated with a teaching degree in history, I had thought that University of Michigan was a pretty good school.

One shouldn’t confuse acquiescence with support. Unless of course, you really believe those 99% approval rates in the old “people’s democracies”.
When you have the “support” of most of the population, you can normally dispense with the expense of secret police and revolutionary guards.

  41. 42. Mike Giles

“And she had no idea about the Arab conquest of the Middle East and N. Africa? Why am I not surprised.”

Thanks for the link, Peter. That’s very interesting, and it shows what happens when the arrogance of post-modernism and secular-humanism create a religious vacuum. Had Europe retained its Christian roots rather than ripping them out with Protestantism and the philosophical idiocy of the last 3 centuries, there would be no threat from such demonic entities as Islam. Or, if there were, it would have to be more open, militaristic, and visible to even those with their heads up their butts.

    Towering Barbarian:

Although I think American self-loathing intensified with the rise of late Victorian industrialists (often called “robber barons”), I think there is a strong difference between openness to new ideas and new technologies and a slavish devotion to the fashions of a foreign land. I think there were some elements of both among our founding fathers.

I regard the American Revolution as unfinished; the American Revolution started when colonists in America discovered that they were not British subjects but rather American citizens – I think the French and Indian War had a lot to do with that. Technically speaking, I don’t think the United States of America was politically independent until 1815 with victory of Algiers.

Culturally speaking, I think the United States is heading into another revolution.

    Dex Quire:

Do we ever hear about Choctaw or Chickasaw elements of New Orleans Jazz? We don’t. They’re there but we don’t hear about them. Why? It’s because the twentieth century is a history of the domination of black musicians over American musical culture.

Rock and roll won over the polkas of Lawrence Welk and jazz won over Souza marches. The main difference between Chicago Rhythm and Blues and early Rock is the race of the musicians (R&B being black and Rock being white). One could call the twentieth century “The Century of Jazz and Rock”.

I think the rise of Barack Obama is a sign that black music will decline in American culture, principally because everything connected to Obama will be seen as “uncool” by future generations. Historically, black culture tends to shift in direct proportion to the outside interest in its products; when one desires separateness, outside appropriation of one’s culture becomes seen as a threat. Hence, the rise of Hip Hop.

Back in 1991, a major shift in musical culture occurred. Before the Los Angeles Riots, the “in” music with most “white” audiences was heavy metal and rap. Almost instantaneously, “hair metal” went out and “Alternative” and “Country” music rose in popularity. I think this had to do with these musical forms being the least affected by black culture; for better or worse, black culture got associated with those riots.

Now, with Barack Obama’s sneering at rural Americans, I think every musical form associated with him will become less popular. He will promote a backlash against not only himself but also his most stalwart followers – and black music will probably get a lot of that backlash. One should not assume that backlashes are always political – they are sometimes cultural and take the form of clothing, music, or dance.

Back to the Rez. Ever heard of the Rez? On Indian Reservations, black rap has become so popular among young people that they imitate black culture and start their own rap groups. Traditional Indian dances and songs naturally lose favor, while traditional languages lose not so much to English as a ghetto version of English.

So when I wrote, “During the twentieth century, black American music became so popular among white Americans that it not only led to widespread contempt toward white American culture, but it also obscured other indigenous musical traditions.”, I referred not only to a cultural self-contempt I saw among my “white” classmates who idolized Michael Jackson yet failed to see excellence in their own midst, but also to how the forces of assimilation toward black music and imitation black music (such as Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, et cetera) undermine adherence to other traditions, from polkas to Indian flute music, from New England church music to New Mexican dances.

Whenever you condemn other people to the straitjacket, try learning something about America and your fellow Americans before doing so. Everything’s a mixed bag, dear sir.

Peter Boston, #37: HEP-T’s comment is the perfect example of why it is almost impossible to discuss religion in an historical context. Most people are either unwilling or unable to distinguish individual or even group actions from whatever religion, or any other attribute, that individual or group might identify with.

Indeed, this is one of Daniel Pipes’ main theses about Islam. He has pointed out that Islamic supremacists have a sense of what Pipes calls “compressed time”, IOW treating even ancient grievances like the Crusades as though they occurred last Tuesday. This makes it a lot easier to bash America, in their eyes the current standardbearer for Christendom, over Christendom’s alleged crimes, even those that were committed long before America even existed.

He “hired a hostess agency to actually recruit these women for these events”.

Back in the day, we called them whores, prostitutes, chickens, whatever. Now they are called models.

Either way, they would do ANYTHING for a few bucks…or dinari, or lira or whatever the hell this slimebucket muslim politician paid them.

The genocidal campaigns against Persians, Indians in prior centuries are entirely omitted from most occidental histories.

The sea of corpses established in the conquest of Iraq — not mentioned.

Instead we heroically fictionalize the barbarism inside the Ottoman Empire in such a way as to make Arabs look like freedom fighters.

    Meanwhile there is this:

    http://www.safeguardourconstitution.com/press-release/aug-31-three-star-general-swears-affidavit.html
    Three Star General Swears Affidavit

Which is way off topic but shows that not just crazy rednecks and bible clingers are interested in just WHO President Obama is. But does give a good reason WHY.

Of course it will not assist in the case as there is no judge or for that matter anyone in the U.S. Legal system who is going to be involved with outing Obama. Mainly because they just don’t have the guts and have put their lively-hood and the almighty dollar ahead of common sense and protecting and preserving our Republic.

And there is always the easy out of declaring that nobody, absolutely nobody has “standing”.

And our Republic, if you haven’t noticed, has become nothing more than a sorry socialist/democracy with failed and corrupted Representatives and States that have lost their nerve – and their way – and love and depend on the federal tit way too damn much.

Sorry, I’m tired, really tired. But not too discouraged, but this has turned out to be a job that is more suited to someone in much better physical shape than I and way younger.

I relented and failed my girls this PM by taking them to McDs because I’m just too bushed to cook and clean up afterwards. Yea, I know that means I have failed as a caregiver.

But they don’t know that and are happy. And it was a better supper than a cold sandwich.

But they are having fresh peaches and imitation whipped cream and they will get their daily vitamin doses along with D3 and medium sized glasses of milk. I also cooked a bunch of my Mama’s Oatmeal Raisin cookies last weekend and they will get one each…cause they are large and fat.

But only after all homework is done or in the younger’s case after she has picked up her toys from last night, which she absolutely refused to do at the time.

On the work front, to protect and preserve our Republic or what is left of it, our benefactor ordered unbeknownst to us, 200 copies of a small pocketbook titled, “Citizen’s Rule Book”, which came in today and I’ve got to get out to people assisting me to pass out as they see fit. To be honest I haven’t read it yet.

OK, back to your regularly scheduled programing.

Take Care, Take Charge and get on the line.

anyway, apparently CBM made their video out of documents that this anti-islam militant guy filmed:

I have seen these video a few month ago on a mililitant blog too

    from CBN:

“It says people have the right to share any belief they want, any religion,” Lepante explained. “But they have to practice at home or in the mosque, synagogues, churches and so on.”

    http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/world/2010/August/Islamization-of-Paris-a-Warning-to-the-West/

precisely Friday is like sunday for the Christians, and this is why these parisian Muslims are out in the street, contrary to it is said average Parisians don’t complain, escpecially in the Barbes quater (where are situated the facts), which is majoritarly a immigraton quater.

I don’t support this report, cuz Muslims need a cult place for their “sunday” pray too. They squat a street for a few hours in order that are listened by the Mayor of Paris, contrary to what the french guy say, such a decision is not a state affair, but a local ‘s. The problem is that this quater is supopulated, and it is difficult to find a available place to construct a Mosquee, which is the best solution, for one can control what the imans say in a official cult place.

Though I see why Breibart and Pat Dollard put this “evangelist” video on : in the context of the discussions for the Manhattan Mosquee. But The images are manipulated for their agenda, and don’t explain the Paris context, but illustrate their purpose.

In one article it said that 2 of the models converted to Islam on the spot. I wonder if they knew that if they ever chose to renounce Islam and return to Christianity, or atheism for that matter, it is punishable by death. Need to read the fine print.

By the way, if you believe all that has been said of Obama, that is an offense that our President would seem to be guilty of also.

None of this is one bit funny. If I lived in France, I’d be terrified. I live in Japan and work in the teaching community, and it is not comfortable.

If you stand up in academia and quote Biblical scripture to explain or support a position, you will be hounded out of the forum for being intolerant and bigoted.

You will be accused and slandered without restraint, and of course (being a person who takes morals seriously) you will be unable to respond in kind

You will not get a fair hearing or a gesture of support (or consideration) from the audience. You are left with only one course: silence, or departure.

I chose departure, after giving an apology and best wishes. If I had waited for a fair hearing, I would have gone to my grave with only bitterness in my heart.

Stand up, and stand alone, at least in this world. Matthew chapter 10, Psalm 23.

    Best regards, Peter Warner.
