Every time we get into the car and drive with our children, there is always risk involved. We take extra safety precautions as much as possible, but sometimes an accident is unavoidable.
According to NBC News, Rylea Taylor, a mother in Australia, was driving with her two children, 16-month-old Jaxon and his 9 year old sister, when the unthinkable happened. Taylor’s car collided with another vehicle head-on going 70 mph. She knew right away something was horribly wrong when she got to her son.”The second I pulled him out, I knew that he — I knew that his neck was broken,”she explained.
The impact was so forceful that it left his head severed from his body internally, tearing apart his upper vertebrae. Jaxson was rushed to a hospital in Brisbane by Life Flight, where he was put into the care of spinal surgeon Geoff Askin.
Dr. Askin performed a six hour operation using a piece of the baby’s rib to fuse his vertebrae back together. Jaxson will wear a neck brace for a few months to allow the nerves and connecting tissues to heal.
Askin said, “A lot of children wouldn’t survive that injury in the first place. And if they did and they were resuscitated they may never move or breathe again.” The baby is in recovery and is making remarkable strides. “It’s a miracle,” says his mother.
