North African Dominoes?

Just days after Hosni Mubarak finally resigned, thousands rally in Algeria and demand democratic reforms.

This won’t spread to Libya, and it won’t spread to Syria. The regimes are too brutal. Only the very brave and the very stupid dare go outside to yell at those governments. The Lebanese could do so in 2005 because they demanded not regime-change in Damascus, but a withdrawal of Assad’s armed forces to his side of the border.

Iraq, amazingly, looks like an island of stability all of a sudden. I don’t expect the king of Jordan will be overthrown either. He’s much more flexible and intelligent than Mubarak, and he understands that concessions to popular opinion must be made before revolutionary masses of people take to the streets.

Algeria, though, just might go the way of Tunisia and Egypt if this takes off.
