The Secret Deals With Iran

May 14th, 2014 - 7:17 pm

“You’re right to keep tweeting that question.  Why the hell is the agreement with Iran still secret?”

I’m always grateful for praise, especially when it comes from America’s legendary spymaster, the late James Jesus Angleton, who was passing on the kind words through my recently rehabbed ouija board.  I’d been repeatedly tweeting “why is the deal with Iran still secret?” and apparently Angleton manages to get online (although with him, you never really know where his information comes from).

ML:  “Presumably there’s some stuff in it that the administration doesn’t want us to know about, otherwise they’d open it up.”

JJA:  “Yes, that’s the obvious explanation.  But I’m surprised that those few members of Congress who HAVE read it, are similarly hushed up.  And I’m also surprised that those who haven’t read it aren’t insisting that they do.  After all, we’re not surprised to have secret treaties, are we?  But then, it’s hard to keep track of all the secret deals in the world nowadays.  Which, among other things, puts a lot of strain on the language…”

ML:  “Yeah, you always were keen on language.  Some of those non-secret ‘secrets’ are Rumsfeldian, they’re part of the ‘known unknown,’ or maybe better, the ‘unknown known.’  For me, that’s the most fascinating one:  the secrets we don’t want to know.”

JJA:  “Precisely.  Not surprisingly, several of them have to do with Iran, a country that specializes in secrecy and deception.”

ML: “Yeah, but these aren’t deceptions, or at least they’re not about Iranian deceptions. As far as I can tell, we and other Western governments are keeping secrets from the people. The governments know what’s happening, but they hush it up. And it’s not only the interim agreement. There’s the whole business about al Qaeda-and-Boko Haram, which in turn leads us to al Qaeda-and-Iran, etcetera. Not to mention the question about American hostages in Iranian captivity.”

JJA: “Let’s leave the hostages for last. I’ve seen a lot of that stuff on Boko Haram, and it’s hilarious to see all the editorialists and columnists who are acting as if they’d been following Nigeria in great detail for a decade or more, heh. All of a sudden everyone’s an expert.”

ML: “Who knew there were so many Africanists? Those of us who did Africa for years and years rarely saw any of these guys…”

JJA: “It’s easier to stay in New York or Washington, you don’t have to take all those shots.”

ML: “Or take those malaria pills with nasty side effects…”

JJA: “But there has been some good research, and I liked that Eli Lake story that referred to academic research on the connections between Boko Haram and al Qaeda.

ML: “Me too. But I wasn’t all that happy with the lack of good followup. That story went back to the 1990s, and said that Boko Haram figures were in touch with Osama bin Laden’s gang in Sudan. And, given the way my mind works, I started thinking…”

JJA: “…about Iran. Well of course, because we know that bin Laden was then establishing working relations with Hezbollah, which of course IS Iran, and so logic grabs you by the throat and drags you to the question: is there a link between Boko Haram and Iran, aside from bin Laden?”

ML: “Just so, exactly what I thought. And then I find that the good Jacob Zenn at the West Point Combating Terrorism Center wrote a good deal about Iranian support for radical Islam in Africa.”

JJA: “And I can promise you that there are American intelligence officers who can connect an awful lot of Iranian dots in West Africa over the years. Iranian arms shipments have been seized, and here and there in the African press you can find former Boko Haram members who talk quite openly about their colleagues being trained in Afghanistan, and even in iran itself. This guy, for example.”

ML: “Yeah, I saw that. But I couldn’t tell how reliable the story was.”

JJA: “There’s quite a bit of it, once you start digging. And of course there’s all that stuff about the al Qaeda-Iran cooperation, mostly written by Tom Joscelyn and Bill Roggio in that wonderful Long War Journal.

ML: “I’ve got some sympathy for the analysts and reporters who get baffled by the AQ-Iran connection. I mean, how can you explain the apparent fact that there are AQ groups fighting each other in Syria, and there’s evidence that Iran is supporting them all?”

JJA: “But we know they did the same thing in Iraq! (He was getting worked up, and started coughing. Are there Camel cigarettes where he is?). They supported both Sunnis and Shi’ites, and both sides of some tribal conflicts as well. They desperately wanted civil war, figuring they would benefit from all the killing.”

ML: “Also, it gives them some degree of control, I suppose, whoever wins in the end…”

JJA: “Well, in Syria they want Assad to win, no question about that. Africa is more like Iraq, the Iranians support radical jihadis whoever they are, Boko Haram included…so, as in Syria as in Iraq and Afghanistan, if you want to win, you’re going to have to come to grips with Iran.”

ML: “Good luck with that one! Obama just wants a deal with Iran, he doesn’t want to challenge the regime in Tehran.”

JJA: “Sure, everybody has that figured out by now. But they always omit another of those non-secret secrets, the one you mentioned at the beginning. The hostages.”

Bedfellows for "the cause".

Revolutionaries bumping uglies and pretending to oppose each other while their Propagandists bury signs of the tryst.

The One World Socialists who want to punish the colonizers, looking for payback and willing to achieve it by any means necessary.

There is no law that will protect us because they are not restrained by any law. There is no threat of being found out because the media is a traitorous conspirator and the Republican Party is by and large hapless and feckless.

We keep trying to soft peddle the reality. Our government has been seized. It is a raging case of political flesh eating parasites. They hate Israel, they hate America, they hate the free market, they hate Judeo-Christian values, they hate US.

ALL their "confusing" moves become clear...if only...we wake up, wisen up, and grow up.

A war where only one side treats the other as the enemy has a 100% predictable outcome. We lose, every time,

One of the most helpful clues I have ever come across in trying to understand the post colonial mentality that is currently driving American foreign policy was an outburst during the Iraq war from George Galloway (The red mayor of London) who declared the islamists "the last best hope of the revolution". Our leaders look at Islamists and see heroic victims of colonialism, not totalitarian religious reactionaries. Even Hillary, who prior to her days at State didn't appear to be a post colonialist, expressed surprise at the behavior of her allies in Benghazi. But Obama has been absolutely consistent. He has never lifted a finger against the Iranian regime and he has constantly tried to make things as difficult as possible for Israel. I don't think Bibi is squirming - just sharpening his knives and pursuing new alliances. And as preposterous as it seems there really is an Iran, North Korea, Venezuelan axis out there. But it is the left that is deluded in this alliance as is born out by the experience of the left in Iran in 1970 which supported the islamists until the Islamists executed them.

There's something here that for some reason still seems not to be fully understood ("for some reason".... Heh, heh...):

1. Iran may hate everything the USA (and the west) stands for, but Iran is NOT the enemy of the Obama administration. Israel is the enemy (along with the GOP and a USA, which must be "fundamentally transformed").
2. Israel, too, must be fundamentally transformed (AKA "saved from itself"). Until it no longer exists (but then, that would be Israel's own fault).
3. The name of the game is, "Make Israel (and Bibi) Squirm". It's easy to play and anyone can (and does) join in.
4. Obama's (and the EU's) support for the Ayatollahs---as well as their support for Abbas (that great "man of peace")---is the essence of the "Make Israel (and Bibi) Squirm" game.
5. One of the more successful strategies used in playing the game is to honestly pretend that Abbas does not wish to destroy Israel---and to pay no heed (or even scoff or yawn) when the Iranians, Hezbullah and Hamas (and the PA) declare that their goal is Israel's destruction. In fact, one will get even more points if one claims on the one hand that Iran, Hezbullah and Hamas (and the PA) really don't wish to destroy Israel (despite their numerous claims that that is exactly what they wish and plan to do), and on the other declare complete understanding (and even sympathy) with Iran, Hezbullah and Hamas (and the PA) say that they wish to do so.
6. Needless to say, one of the essential rules of the game is that Israel must be regarded as the party responsible for there being no peace with the Palestinians (and for that matter, no peace in the Middle East---and, why not?, no peace in the world).
7. Yep, it's a great game and anyone can play. Just remember who the enemy is and who your allies are. (Iran an Obama/Kerry/Jarrett/EU ally? You bet.)

Michael, I believe that you are AGAINST this, but I can say it honestly: "These filthy bloodthirsty evil regimes and their followers of the Islamic terrorists groups "al Qaeda, ISIL, Hizbullah and Hamas" and also the horrified communist regimes, without a nuclear strike on their heads to change their cities to ash, never can demolish, the mullahs regime and that evil satanic black dark filthy culture, never can be tear down without a shattering war. This is the Best Way To Deal With them. the war should take place EVERYWHERE!!!"

Those of us who remember the "Iranian Hostage Crisis" will never believe anything they say. Americans were treated brutally....Carter acted like a naïve fool and must people at my advanced age do all the remembering what being a relatively unarmed country is like. Prior to Pearl Harbor, American soldiers practiced with WOODEN GUNS....It took months and many deaths to bring Americans up to winning capacity. Many Americans went through Hell. I knew someone in the Bataan DEATH MARCH. DID YOU?

Ledeen, you said, "a number of CIA agents who are in Iranian prisons. One of them, an Iranian-American woman, was ransomed for a tidy sum several months ago, and is now back in the US.
...
In case you’re wondering, the story about the lady agent was given to two of our most famous reporters, but they haven’t written a word about it."
-->Wow! Wow! and Double-Wow! I am being serious. I find this absolutely sickening, if not almost "treasonous." What reporter would not want to write a story about a courageous CIA agent caught and them ransomed by Iran.

Now certainly if the CIA "forced" said reporters not to write anything, I suppose that's different. But I imagine that in this country they could have still at least written about the story in an obtuse way so as not to reveal anything of note (right?).

Please respond and indicate whether you feel this is correct. I assume from your pointing it out to begin with that you also feel some amount of disgust at the lack of reporting on Iran (in all its terrorism-directing glory) in general. I certainly share this feeling and I fully concur with you regarding the apparent attempt to hide any preliminary agreements by Obama W/R/T a deal with Iran.

In fact, Evelyn Gordon and Jonathan Tobin at Commentary have both made similar points in pieces yesterday (5/14) and today (5/15). Frankly, I'm damned worried at this point that Obama/Kerry are *indeed* about to close a "bad deal" as opposed to "no deal." That being in *direct contravention* to their promise repeated over and again and once again even yesterday by Susan Rice in Israel.

I have always thought Obama has extreme prejudice toward Moslem countries and have never been convinced that he is not a Moslem himself. Just saying otherwise doesn't make it so. I don't care if his birth certificate says Hawaii or Kenya....it's his attitude that counts.
Time and again the man has told lies.....and eventually admitting that. We cannot pick and choose what to believe. GET REAL!

yes i am appalled at the lack of coverage of the current hostage situation. as we learned in Iran-Contra, negotiating hostage releases can overwhelm serious policy concerns. that may be happening again. it's a serious matter, but the bigtime reporters don't seem interested.

Isn't the obvious explanation for the Obama fecklessness on Iran (and virtually every other part of their foreign "policy") the following:

Obama WANTS Iran to have a nuke, so as to simultaneously cut Israel down to size (it's pretty obvious he's always wanted that outcome) and simultaneously cause America to also lose influence in the Middle East (it's reality, whether or not he intended it so ... I just happen to believe that this is a feature, not a bug, of the Obama foreign policy).

I mean, Barack Obama is like history's most obvious America hater, despite having to make strained efforts to appear otherwise as our Commander in Chief ... which mindset he inherited from his flaky mother and learned from his real father, Frank Marshall Davis, who was a Communist spy based in Hawaii (the whole "Obama Senior" deal was just a cover story to benefit his grandfather, who was a CIA spook and couldn't afford to let it get out that his daughter was impregnated by one of his own professional targets). Conveniently, Davis stuck around to continue mentoring young Obama, even after he returned to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. That last part is in his book - I didn't make that up.

BO's only got two years and eight months left to do his life's work before the next President inherits the office and who, regardless of whoever it will be, won't be on Obama's anti-American wavelength.

Look for it to get much dicier before January 20, 2017.

No mystery here. Terrorism works. The Department of State and the CIA have been thoroughly cowed by Iran.

After reading Ledeen's earlier essay on how things are better than they appear because our enemies Venezuela, Russia, Iran et al are weaker was than they appear.

In particular the Iranian leadership look like nothing more than a bunch of great apes vying for social position and power so they can have the biggest harem and thus biggest brood. In the end these silverbacks or silver back wanna bes will kill each other. They cannot betray their DNA.

There is hope in Iran. Many are turning to Christianity. Maybe then we can "all try try to get along" instead playing at alpha male and leaving the biggest brood. Of course once Islam is played out, the Machiavellian among us will try to use the precepts of Christianity to their advantage like they have in the past and will again.

The worst of it is that the Left wants to use Islam against their enemies (as people have pointed out here). they are playing the same game as the Iranian silverbacks.

"The last best hope of The Revolution"

...finally, A LEFTIST BEING HONEST about their feelings towards Islamic Jihad.

Though I kind of think you're slightly off about the Left seeing them as "heroic". The Left knows quite well they're a fanatical army of barbaric killers.

They're just trying to figure out how they can bring that army here and set them loose on the Enemies of the Left.

Amnesty and Open Borders are the route the Left prefers.
