The whole point of a defamation suit is to seek reparation for damage done to your reputation. Indeed, in the wake of his shockingly successful defamation suit against the estate (read: widow and children) of American Sniper author Chris Kyle, former Minnesota governor turned conspiracy peddler Jesse Ventura declared that his reputation was restored. But restored to what? This guy wasn’t exactly a pillar of the community before Kyle claimed to have punched him in a bar. Here’s ten ways Jesse Ventura ruined his reputation without Kyle’s help.

10. Wrote a Conspiracy Book on the JFK Assassination

Jesse’s status as a conspiracy peddler will make repeat appearances on this list. It’s quite a downshift from governor of a state, and yet the path Ventura chose upon returning to private life.

Confirmation bias marks the conspiratorial mindset. It’s easy to latch faithfully onto information which appears to verify your presumptions, and just as easy to flatly dismiss information which contradicts your biases. Jesse exhibits that well in this exchange with former CNN host Piers Morgan.

That pretty much sums it up. If Ventura is a scumbag jerk it's not because of the lawsuit.

It strikes me that deliberately pissing off every active and former Special Operator of all services, and their families, by abusing Chris Kyle’s widow and children may be an act with consequences.

Fair attack or not, true or not, a decent man does not go after a widow.

Ventura is scum.

The damage Kyle did to Ventura's reputation didn't die with him.

You planning on getting your feathers ruffled by the conspiracy theories spread by Chris Kyle? Like his claims about navy seals and Katrina?

Ventura's beneath contempt. (But he's not really worth a story here, is he?)

Completely missed the trip to Cuba, the hugs of Fidel, and the worship of Che Guevara.

I don't know whether that qualifies as one or three more.

Well, we are talking about the former governor of the state that has the unfunny Al Franken, elected by the crayon scrawls on ballots vote—yes, I bothered to review the ballots in question. The ballots were posted by the state online, along with what the auditors decided they meant. As for Ventura, I hope he gets his medication straightened out someday.

I met Maria Oswald. She goes by a different name now. She thinks her husband acted alone.

My take would be that I would have dropped the suit (step back, would not have initiated a suit-because someone said they knocked me down???), however, what I have not read, is, was Ventura already in too far (his lawyers would still want to be paid, and I am sure that was not an insignificant amount where they would be willing to drop)? This whole issue is demonstrative of the abusiveness of punitive lawsuits. Also, just for snark, I think wearing his hair that way also hurts his rep...

The jury got it wrong in thinking that Ventura (I'd call him a D****e-canoe, but he's more of a D****e-Nimitz-Aircraft Carrier) had a reputation worth more than a couple cents, at most. Kyle may or may not have lied, and I think a video deposition tends to carry a lot less weight to jurors, which was part of the problem the defense had. Ventura should have dropped the matter when Kyle died. His beef was with the dead guy and should have died with him.
