9. McLintock! (1963)

The Duke’s version of The Taming of the Shrew (co-starring his sparring partner from The Quiet Man, Maureen O’Hara) is one of his broadest comedies, an easygoing romp that showed Wayne being more overtly political in the role of a cattle king with family troubles. As a joke on Hubert Humphrey, the governor of the state for whom McLintock has nothing but contempt is named “Cuthbert H. Humphrey.”

Silverado, Once upon a time, Liberty Valance, McKlintock and Butch don't make the list. Josey Wales and Shane tie for all time greatest westerns. Shane edges out Josey Wales because of it's concept of good winning out over evil. I defy any man that has a son to have a dry eye when the boy cries, Shane, come back.

Liberty Valance is also a tragic love story. (SPOILER ALERT) Everyone in the frontier town of Shinbone knew that someday Tom Doniphon and Liberty Valance would have a classic showdown. But when the girl he loves begs Doniphon to do something about the impeding showdown between the man she now loves, the inept dude Ramson Stoddard, and Liberty Valance, Doniphon breaks his personal code of honor. Later, when Doniphon tells Stoddard who really shot Liberty Valance, he notes that he could live with the shooting and Stooddard could not. In fact, Doniphon could not live with it: He becomes the town drink. The question remains at the end of the film, was it losing the girl that cost Doniphon his self respect Or was it how he broke his personal code of honor and cut Valance down from ambush?

"Silverado" is well worth multiple viewings, and boasts a memorable score by Bruce Broughton.

I was pleased to see "Lonesome Dove" included, though it was originally a Made-for-TV miniseries. And as one who originally only saw it on the small screen, I must recommend the wide-screen version available on BluRay. (My commendation doesn't extend to the sequel or the awful third series.) I'm also a fan of Open Range, even if Robert Duvall seemed to be reprising the role of Augustus McRay.

If they don't have The Outlaw Josey Wales or Open Range they don't have diddly squat.

The reality is that Netflix doesn't stream many great Westerns.
