The 2012 Lakers: An Autopsy
The season is finally over for the Los Angeles Lakers, and it didn’t end well. The team lost in 5 games to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the playoffs. It didn’t have to be this way. In two of the games that they lost, the Lakers had a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter. Why did the Lakers blow those games? Because OKC is younger, quicker, more athletic and more talented; and because the Lakers are older, slower and only have one player they can rely on, Kobe Bryant.
Kobe was the only player who played well Monday night for the Lakers. In fact, he was fantastic, scoring 42 points. Pau Gasol was more aggressive than he was in the last couple games, but he did not have a good night, making 35% of his shots. In all likelihood he will be traded this summer. Gasol’s contribution to the Lakers during the last 5 years has been terrific, as he was instrumental in helping the Lakers win 2 championships. In fact, his effort for the Lakers was second to only Kobe Bryant, and for that Pau will forever hold a special place in Lakers fans’ hearts.
I am not a Lakers fan but I feel your pain. Obviously this is a team in need of a major overhaul but far from certain that the LA front office is up to the task. If Jerry West was still GM the Lakers he would be dealing TODAY to bring in top talent to surround Mr. Bryant. (I don’t know him well enough to call him Kobe.) There is some talk of Dwight Howard coming to the Lakers which would give the team another big star but also a guy who leads the league in self-centered pouting.
I’m pulling for a final between the Spurs and Pacers. Not only would we get to see the quietly awesome Tim Duncan again but we would get a matchup featuring great team ball and a minimum of commentator slobbering over individual players.
Bynum is a star when he feels like it. Kind of like Odom.
Brown’s idea with Kobe’s endorsement was to make the Gasol/Bynum pair the first option, since mid-year. It worked for a while. I can’t quite tell you why it stopped working – got scouted, is a good possibility.
MJ found himself a slightly reduced role his last couple of years, and Kobe is now looking for the same. I hope he finds it. But it’s tough assembling a championship team, takes both skill and luck and a great coach too.

No one will want to take on Gasol’s salary due to his age and declining production. The Lakers are in a bind. Bynum is the only tradeable asset they have and he’s their future considering Kobe is older than Gasol and has a lot more miles on his legs. They were screwed the moment the Chris Paul trade was blocked.
I thought the end of the season for the Lakers was wonderful.
