Quote of the Day

May 5th, 2013 - 12:54 pm

Deep down, progressives (i.e. socialists) are not populists. Deep down, progressives despise the majority of their fellow citizens, and don’t trust them at all. They love America but hate most of the Americans. Progressives are entranced with the possibilities presented by a benevolent dictatorship. They ignore the peril, that it can mutate into a malevolent dictatorship because they believe in their own virtue. They’re sure it won’t happen if they’re in charge. As to Democracy? It’s a burden, a barrier; it gives the vote to all the rednecks and knuckle-draggers who have been mislead by the evil capitalists (remember the Doctrine of False Consciousness? Pernicious claptrap, that one, but it has a lot of currency on the left) and will resist the Progressive program even though it’s Obviously the right thing to do.

If only Progressives, as an enlightened elite, had the ability to impose their program on the rest of us, eventually we’d come around to their point of view. But that means they need dictatorial power, and Democracy prevents that.

The corollary to the issue of control and hating the masses is that the left never, ever admits it's wrong. If Obamacare fails, or if another pet liberal issue that's put into action fails, it's not because their policy was flawed, it's because conservatives somehow sabotaged it, and the answer is to give the left more control.

That's why the 'benevolent dictatorship' inevitably becomes a harsh and vengeful one, because even when they have control, they can't accept the blame for their failed policies and then must cast a wider and wider net as time goes by to find people to blame for the failures (Stalin's show trials of the 1930s being the best example of how giving the left complete control ultimately ends up with the left eating its own).

Progressives love the America as they think it should be, the America they want to build (over the objections of all the rest of us). They don't love America as it exists today -- or rather, they love the terrain, but they hate all the people living here.

Always a treat to hear from SDB. He abandoned his political blog USS Clueless, so I heard, because he was tired of his commenters always crapping at him for his opinion. So I'm sorry to quibble with him about one point here. I don't believe proggs love America but hate the people. I think they believe that America and her works are the scourge of the world, and must be overthrown via revolution, peacefully or otherwise. And although they are demonstrably contemptuous of the actual populace, they do bang on about how much they love The People in the abstract.

Like I said, a quibble. Please blog more, Steven!
