World may not be warming, say scientists
The United Nations climate panel faces a new challenge with scientists casting doubt on its claim that global temperatures are rising inexorably because of human pollution.
“The temperature records cannot be relied on as indicators of global change,” said John Christy, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a former lead author on the IPCC.
The doubts of Christy and a number of other researchers focus on the thousands of weather stations around the world, which have been used to collect temperature data over the past 150 years.
These stations, they believe, have been seriously compromised by factors such as urbanisation, changes in land use and, in many cases, being moved from site to site.
“The story is the same for each one,” he said. “The popular data sets show a lot of warming but the apparent temperature rise was actually caused by local factors affecting the weather stations, such as land development.”
And even Phil Jones, East Anglia’s Mr. “Hide the Decline” himself, is rapidly backtracking, as Noel Sheppard writes at Newsbusters:
In a lengthy Q&A published at BBC.com Saturday, Jones also said: the recent warming trend that began in 1975 is not at all different than two other planetary warming phases since 1850; there has been no statistically significant warming since 1995, and; it is possible the Medieval Warm Period was indeed a global phenomenon thereby making the temperatures seen in the latter part of the 20th century by no means unprecedented.
Perhaps the most significant quote from Jones is this:
N – When scientists say “the debate on climate change is over”, what exactly do they mean — and what don’t they mean?
It would be supposition on my behalf to know whether all scientists who say the debate is over are saying that for the same reason. I don’t believe the vast majority of climate scientists think this. This is not my view. There is still much that needs to be undertaken to reduce uncertainties, not just for the future, but for the instrumental (and especially the palaeoclimatic) past as well.
Definitely keep that paragraph handy the next time a politician attempts the inevitable “the time for talking is over / this is settled science” dodge to shut down debate.
Which brings us back to Al Gore. He’s on record as being the number one fan of the Marxist Frankfurt School; at some point I wonder if he’ll quietly switch the defense of his movie from “this is settled science” to some variation on the postmodern “this my truth” trope, to help sell his Sorelian Myth, as Lee Harris defined the term in 2006:

Thus for Sorel there was “an…analogy between religion and the revolutionary Socialism which aims at the apprenticeship, preparation, and even the reconstruction of the individual — a gigantic task.”
Which sounds like it defines Al’s film remarkably well.

Any other category of Oscar would justly reward making things up so effectively, it’s what Hollywood does, but a documentary must be truthful to not become propaganda. In the name of truth told well, I think the Academy has to disqualify both Al and Michael Moore, and their respective Oscars given to the runners up.

Serving as the centerpiece for Al Gore’s sermon on the mounting dangers of human achievement in his 2006 sci-fi film, it has come to represent the mainstream accepted depiction of last millennium’s temperatures. That is, trending downward prior to an abrupt upturn around 1900, coinciding with the atmospheric build-up of CO2 emissions brought about by the industrial revolution. In AR4’s SPM, policymakers absorbing the striking visual were also treated to this declarative caption:
“[T]he rate and duration of warming of the 20th century has been much greater than in any of the previous nine centuries. Similarly, it is likely that the 1990s have been the warmest decade and 1998 the warmest year of the millennium.”
Despite repeated debunking, the embattled chart continues to languish in U.N. climate reports, its portrayal of unprecedented 20th-century warming a major sales tool to those wishing to influence everything from domestic energy policy to international “climate-debt” reparations. All based on the ostensibly “settled science” that the waste-products of mankind’s economic expansion are dangerously increasing temperatures and ultimately threatening the planet.
And yet, now Jones – who was a contributing author of the same TAR WG1 report which featured the fraudulent chart — admits that the science behind it isn’t settled at all. In fact, he even admitted that the MWP was “clearly expressed” in the Northern Hemisphere, which it certainly was.</b?

If you read the Jones interview closely, you’ll realize that he is coming clean in a Clinton/Jesse Jackson/Monica sort of way, only to rehab the image of AGW.
“See, we’re opening up now, we admit past mistakes, and AGW is still true. We might not be doomed. On the other side of the coin, we may still be doomed, so give us more grant money because we desparately need to do more research on the matter…moreso now that ever. Now that it has come to light that our data was all phony, we need a few trillion more dollars and a few more decades so we can do it again, only this time we’ll do it right. Just give us the grants.”
AGW is not dead by a long shot. The American MSM is pushing back harder than ever on this, aided by the Experts in junk science whose paychecks depend on this scam. The word “redoubled” comes to mind when thinking about their efforts these last couple of months. Scientists in every single legitimate “-ology” and even some that were just made up are dependent on this scam. They gotta eat, too, you know! (…and travel the world all year, and live in lavish luxury on our dime…)
So what this really means is that like evolution, the dinosaurs, and the big bang scientists have no REAL evidence to support their claims. Climate change is in fact just another theory that can’t be conclusively proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt. If this were a court case the judge would throw it out for lack of evidence.
Climate scaremongers need to step back, get a grip, take in the big picture and leave other people alone. If their lives are so empty that they need to live other lives for them they should go to China, Venezuela, Cuba or Iran where people could really use others to make their decisions for them. Living for a while under real dictatorship might give them a whole new appreciation for freedom, liberty and personal space. What Professor Christy has said is the most important statement from a climate scientist in the last ten years. It tells us the way forward. The temperature recording stations are not reliable and must be replaced. Some trusted group of scientists, but not a government agency and certainly not the discredited IPCC, must come up with a plan for creating a system of temperature measurement stations and that plan must be advertised on the internet for comment from all interested parties, everyone. Once the stations are in place, then reliable data can be collected and there can be rational debate over the hypothesis of global warming.

The wheels are finally (and truly) coming off the AGW bus, but as several comments have noted the frauds of liberal academia will return again and again, claiming gloom and doom but with hand extended grasping for money. I dare say that a few more good snowstorms, with a delightfully looney weatherman giving the forecast, might, just might, make the warmalists dig that much deeper into their mushpit of fraud and nonsense. Three points: 1) Climate change apocalypse corresponds to aging Baby Boomer’s subconscious realization that they are going to die. To a self-absorbed generation, the idea that the world could continue to exist beyond their lifespan is impossible.
2) A little humility is needed to appreciate that Mother Earth is populated by humans during an unique window of time in the lifespan of the planet.
3) An intergalactic travelogue would describe our planet as a place dominated by insects. If all the mammals became extinct, other life on earth would flourish, even with global temperature change. However, if all the insects disappeared, it would be a completely different planet.
Jones’ hedging on Medieval Warming is significant. The last few years have seen a multitude of studies supporting the historical anecdotal evidence of the MWP.

It is my understanding that these emails involve a small subset of climate researchers looking at one specific climate question. In my view, these emails do not undercut the vast body of evidence showing the world is warming because of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. The National Academy of Sciences, the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and many other scientific bodies have collected data, done rigorous analysis and reached a consensus that climate change is occurring and that it is caused by the combustion of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases.”

What we need to pay attention-to is what’s happening in the background. None of these lying whackos have lost their jobs for perpetrating a lie and falsifying “scientific” data. I have long known that the “Oscars” were a sham and a fraud, but it has been (in the last twenty years or so) that the Nobel prize is slightly lest honorable than being named “man of the year” by Time, or News Week.

Reading the Phil Jones/BBC interview, he acknowledges that there are a number of different ways of collecting data and constructing a “global temperature record”…that “There is more than one “official” surface temperature record…”
Everything rests on which data sets you use, your choice of computer modeling, how you set up your collection sites/weather stations, which ones you include/exclude, how you structure your study, and even, dare it be said, which particular biases you set out to prove or disprove.
I’d say that establishing definitive proof as to the relationship between emissions of human origin and climate is well nigh impossible.
Regardless, we still need more grant money. Billions more. So we can study the problem further, see. This is very important.

So if I understand climate gate right, a bunch of scientists in England and the U.S. got together to do bogus science and then used said science to get federal grants to do more bogus science. Tit. 18 usc. sec. 371 provides:

How can an entire world of people get so hoodwinked by a theory that makes no sense at all? I think most humans are basically stupid and qualify as completely pusillanimous and usually attempt to acquire information by counting the times they hear words and phrases. There should be investigation’s and people should be put in prison for this mess. How much of the taxpayer’s money has been thrown away on this? How many jobs have been lost and entire families losing everything because of this? This is very serious and has been a hugh burden on all of us. Where is the justice? We need to keep the pressure on.
