Republicans: Don’t Let the Media and Liberals Demoralize You
I was reading over at HotAir that the life ratings of Republicans have collapsed: “If you’re feeling completely demoralized about the future, you are not alone” says AllahPundit. I headed over to the Gallup poll to view the data on the state of Republican’s feelings of their future and read this:
Republicans’ ratings of their lives worsened significantly in November, with their collective Life Evaluation Index score dropping to 40.3, from 47.0 in October. Independents’ life ratings also declined last month, but to a lesser degree. Democrats became slightly more upbeat — their Life Evaluation Index score climbed to 56.9, from 53.7 in October….
The decline in Republicans’ overall Life Evaluation Index score is due entirely to a drop in how they rate their future life. Republicans became much more pessimistic in November about how good they think their lives will be five years from now. They rated their lives five years from now an average of 7.0 last month — the lowest for this group on record.
Republicans’ future life rating also now about matches their current life rating of 6.9. This is out of synch with the typical pattern — most people tend to rate their future life higher than their current life.
I wonder how much the media and the liberal hatred of Republicans plays into the current Republican angst. It’s almost as if Republicans are the new Jews of yesteryear where any vile dirty thing can be said about them with little blowback and less truth. The media blames Republicans for every ill that comes down the pike. A storm in the Northeast? Damn Republicans caused it. You aren’t making the money you once did? A Republican did that to you. A violent young man kills 27? That Republican sitting next to you is somehow to blame. That’s what the media wants people to believe and because people are eager for a scapegoat, many listen without critical thought.
I am always surprised at those people who consider themselves intelligent, well-meaning “empathetic” types who think nothing of tossing out some nasty crack about Republicans –whether at the holiday table, in the classroom or in line at the supermarket. It puts people on the opposite side of the political fence on the defense and makes for an antagonistic atmosphere, one that is growing more hostile by the day. I used to think that people should try to be “tolerant” and not get too upset by the jabs. I was wrong.
Here is my advice: rather than just take it and fill out a poll saying you are demoralized, fight back. Even if you feel uncomfortable, even if you might wreck the holiday party, and even if it means you might be open to hostility like you have never seen before, speak up. Or, if you don’t want to talk politics, just say so and say that this type of talk makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are with friends or family and they don’t understand this, how important can they be in your life? If your well-being is that unimportant to them, why bother? Perhaps next year, you need to spend the holidays in Barbados if you can or at least in the company of those who don’t see your politics as evil.
The holidays can be a hard time of year for those of us on the right side of the aisle. The media sides with the emotionally abusive liberal when it comes to politics and this gives many liberals free rein to feel they are entitled to say anything without penalty. Don’t let that happen to you. Don’t be demoralized about your future, for we are 47% strong and though we are not the majority at this point, no condition is permanent. As a sign that I recently saw up at a local church said: “Every storm runs out of rain. Hang in there.”

Give up the real world. Live on the net where the world is your oyster and you never have to clam up.
OTOH, every dog has his day so you could keep your grip and hang in there.
My proposition for this is the exact same proposition that I have for men tired of getting screwed over in our matriarchal society: Remove your support from the people who hate you as much as possibly can.
Do not come to the aid of anyone, unless you are paid to do so (i.e. police officer or firefighter) or you know for a fact the other person would reciprocate if the shoe was on the other foot.
Do not donate any money to any church, charity, or non-profit that does not further your view of the world.
It is fine to have friends you may disagree with politically, but the minute they refuse to tolerate your position you need to consider ending the friendship.
Right on TMG, left my church for another cause the old one thought of me as a evil gun loving Neanderthal. That church said they were against abortion but gave millions to Obama. They hate my kind get no funding from me. I found a church more in line with my political views.
Funny you should mention this. I was at my traditional Anglican church today when I overheard a conversation in which one woman said she was a former Episcopalian who got tired of the liberalism. Many of us at the church feel that way but we don’t often voice our opinion out of fear. Fear of what? Considering this church is growing by leaps and bounds from us former something or others who have all left more liberal churches, still we have the habit of keeping our conservatism to ourselves.
I was at lunch with two well educated guys in their 60′s (I’m in my mid 40′s). We all have PhDs in engineering. One was a good friend, one was a guy I liked. The good friend and I had had “disagreements” prior (the mention of the Little Black Book of Communism got him into a anti Christian rage like none I had ever seen). I forgave it, figuring he could be educated. Could he seriously believe that low level warfare and standard medieval slaughter was the same as the systematic purge of 10s of millions? But then he and this guy went into a rant – it was 2007 – about how the new democrat congress would impeach Bush and Cheney, and that the entire administration would be thrown into jail for their crimes against humanity. That republicans would be seen as the criminals and overall evil that they were.
I quietly finished my lunch, paid my bill, and said goodbye. No promises to catch up later. I permanently removed them from my life. Life is too short to argue with numbskulls. I only regret I didn’t let them know at the time – but the difference between conservatives and libs is that we generally are polite, and don’t hold personal enmity. But that’s changing. You can only watch this so long and not see the signs. And with the upcoming zombie apocalypse (zombie is the generic term for leaches) they will be looking for a scapegoat. They always have.
May I suggest something? My experience with conservatives (not all by any means) is that if you disagree with them they think you do not know the facts and are persuasive. But if you disagree with a liberal you are automatically in conflict with a morally superior position, a more virtuous world view point–they might tolerate you, probably not.
“Terrorism is the natural emanation of virtue.” By one who knew: Robespierre.
Have a wonderful holiday season, Dr. Smith!
To all: While you can’t control what others think you or do, you can control your own thoughts and actions. This lies at the heart of the philosophical struggle to define and seek the good life. Never forget this simple truth.
As an academic, I’ve had a few occasions to deal with abusive colleagues – very intelligent but lacking self-discipline in some situations – to whom ad hominem comes too easily. While not responding in kind was difficult at first, attacking the weakness of their arguments proves a far greater pleasure; particularly in the reaction it provokes. Added pleasure comes when those on the sideline, while remaining in disagreement, later express quietly a support they might not otherwise acknowledge. Each moment in life is pregnant with possibility.
Thanks, happy holidays to you too.
Let’s be really politically correct and wish each other:
-Merry Christmas-
I’ve got an atheist friend who refuses to substitute “Happy holidays” for “Merry Christmas” — he won’t even say “Happy holidays”. He calls political correctness a more gross example of hypocrisy than anything conservatives do.
I agree with your friend in all particulars. I’m an atheist as well, but I refuse to use the PC “Happy Holidays.” (Although I will wish a Jewish friend a happy Hanukkah.)
The holiday is called Christmas. It’s a major event in Western civilization and a happy, fun end of year holiday for everyone. Call it what it is. It’s Christmas. Merry Christmas, one and all.
I’m an atheist who refuses to say Happy Holidays as well. I love Christmas and hate the PC crap that people are shoving down peoples throats.
> I wonder how much the media and the liberal hatred of Republicans plays into the current Republican angst.
I dunno. Maybe conservatives are just more perceptive and can see the horrific problems lying ahead whose precipitants the liberals are running out in front to embrace.
Sometimes angst is rational.
> I am always surprised at those people who consider themselves intelligent, well-meaning “empathetic” types who think nothing of tossing out some nasty crack about Republicans…
Or conservatives, or Christians, or Southerners, or men, or fatties… Liberals like to think PC is conquering bigotry. It is not. It is simply setting its sites on different, more acceptable targets.
As a fat male southerner who is an evangelical Christian I think you hit the nail on the head! Oh, and I am white too! Good thing my joy does not rest upon political victories. I would be in trouble!
Merry Christmas everyone!
Trey
“Maybe conservatives are just more perceptive and can see the horrific problems lying ahead whose precipitants the liberals are running out in front to embrace.”
Indeed. Being smeared by the media or shunned by liberals does not demoralize me in the least. What I worry about is that some very bad ideas are being put in place whose real-world consequences will be a disaster. To the extent that I care what other people think, I am saddened that so many of my fellow citizens seem incapable of reasoned or long-range thought.
This. So very much, this.
When one is in a crashing plane, watching someone else throw the parachutes out is cause for angst.
My wife and I are buying a new house this afternoon. While we started construction on it months before the election, we aren’t letting the outcome stop us from enjoying life. When Obama won reelection, I saw it as evidence that America has already passed the tipping point where takers are outnumbering makers. We’ve saved all our marriage and should have enough to retire on our own terms.
I don’t know what the future holds. A certain pessimism says it will be worse – probably much worse – than what we enjoyed in the past. All we as individuals can do is try to hold our own ground. I am watching a great deal less of the news (other than for the local area) and have turned off talk radio for the time being. I still read a lot on the web but I refuse to allow politics to control my life or my outlook.
For me it isn’t about giving up or the media culture, just a realization that things may be significantly worse in 5 years based on short-sighted political economic decisions those in leadership will continue to make. I’m still going to enjoy each day with family and friends, speak up when needed about the issues I care about, and do my best to create jobs and wealth for those who want to participate.
Is it possible that Republicans are simply being realistic about the future? I certainly feel that this election (and the last one) have significantly, negatively and permanently affected the potential of a better life for myself and my children. I believed that this nation could survive the election of Barack Obama in ignorance and enthusiasm in 2008, but this nation cannot survive an electorate who knowingly and deliberately elected Barack Obama in 2012.
We’re done. The American Century and all it has wrought is all over but the shouting. And there will be lots and lots of shouting.
You’re right.
But there are alternatives – just not ones that most people automatically think of.
Maybe I’ll see you HERE one day.
The white man is the new Jew. In the same day, I saw a NYT article with lead-off comment, “D—, looks like a bunch of white guys grabbing their wallets instead of caring about others,” (recalled from memory), when they asked about the fiscal cliff in Obama’s gun-grab news conference; later, in Crain’s Business, the editrix ran an article about how women aren’t single-issue voters which included the first quote, “We’re tired of decisions being made by white guys with bad haircuts.”
The GOP should quit playing the game of trying to satisfy the demands for minority representatives from the GOP, because the Democrats unleash every tool in their arsenal to wipe them out — see Mr. West or Mrs. Love — and just embrace and accept being the white guy’s party, and simply oppose everything that the Obama coalition offers.
DH,
Merry Christmas.
Have been married for 9 years and for the first few got along fine with my Liberal Inlaws.
Now they have become über liberal and lash out at me venom if I even mispronounce a word. What happened in 2009 ( mid year they started talking to me like I was a low life)?
MSNBC. My Finlaw became a huge fan. My Minlaw screams idiot, dummy, DUH! all the time at me. Sound familiar cough, cough, Chris Matthews, cough?
I just ignored it but can’t any longer. You mention the “media”—— my in laws and I’m sure other Liberals get their cues from the media who have gone so far left, even the middle is radical right wing now. They are addicted to Good Morning America ( which I call soft porn Liberalism—- Liberalism disguised as “issues” geared towards women).
The solution?
George Stephanopolos and Matt Lauer, Brian Williams ( all old white guys, ok?) careers need to be destroyed.
Today’s media needs to be destroyed. We will never ever get a fair shake unless these three, to start, get fired and we start to get some fair treatment in front of the 40 million Americans these media reach or mornings and evenings.
Yes we have Fox ( do we really?) talk radio, new media, but TV is still king. We will never win another presidential election with them giving away 3 billion dollars in free positive PR ( John Ziegler estimate) to give a 15-18 point advantage.
Never.
Someone needs to start a media campaign against the media. I thought Romney would. He didn’t, we lost.
As long as we allow them to define us, we are doomed.
Amen. They define us as they wish. We have to destroy the media as it currently exists, or we’ll continue to be marginalized.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, but you need to let your in-laws know you will not accept being treated that way. Frankly, I’d say you should tell them that, as much as you’d hate to make your spouse choose between you and them, if they persist in treating you that way, you’ll have no choice. This sort of behavior goes beyond politics. It’s just plain-out disrespectful. And it’s only a matter of time before your spouse follows suit on his or her parents’ behavior.
Seriously, I agree with the commenter above who said you should not stand for this behavior, it is unacceptable if your in-laws are calling you dummy and idiot. I frankly, wouldn’t go near them and would tell your wife why. If your wife stands for their abuse of you, what does this say about her? I would be clear with her that you will no longer go around them until they learn to control themselves.
A plea for perspective . . .
So many people offer only ^their^ side of a story. None of us knows, for example, whether #9 Mattled has done other things that have made his/her in-laws start treating him/her in such a newly obnoxious manner.
CAUTION — I’m not saying there are other factors, I’m not saying there are ^not^ other factors. I ^am^ saying that none of us reading this knows.
I’m also ^not^ suggesting that many, many lefties are not obnoxious individuals. Many ^are^, and for a number of reasons for which there is too little time and space — probably more so than righties these days.
But please bear in mind the central point of this contribution: humans tend to emphasize points in their favor and deemphasize and/or omit points that may reflect on themselves unfavorably.
Why do people feel the need to play umpire?
You know what drives the other side absolutely crazy? When you refuse to respond to their expectations. After election day, my lefty colleagues were expecting to see me cry and wince and whine. When I didn’t do it, when I was whistling and going about my business, they were at first puzzled but then they were downright angry.
They asked “Did I still insist on being a Republican? Didn’t this finally make me give up?”
I told them “Nope. Better luck next time I guess. We may have lost the election, but we are not defeated, I guess we will see you again in 2014, right?”
This “smile broadly” tactic seemed to be the very last thing they ever considered. I loved every minute of it( to be sure, I would have preferred winning, but this wasnt so bad!)
Cheer up! We have math on our side!
I’m just paying down my debt, filled out a new W4 to increase my withholding, and hunkering down. But I will feel some Schadenfreude when my Obama-loving friends see their taxes go up on Jan 1. They’ll wonder what happened… and then blame Bush.
Sigh, I give up.
I was one who took that poll, and I can tell you that it has nothing to do with my reputation among the talking heads and newspaper editors, and everything to do with a very real — and in my mind legitimate — belief that our lives really will be worse five years from now. The economy is accelerating toward a Greek finale, while the nation’s enemies abroad continue to grow in power and reach. My kids are saddled with another $10,000 in debt every year, for services they never voted on nor received.
So let’s not pretend that I’m demoralized, because I’m not. Rather, I’m convinced that things are going to get worse before they get better. Not that I’m just crying in my beer over the state of the world — no, I’m working hard to put my family in a position where the Interesting Times won’t hurt us too badly. Or at least, not as badly as those blithely pretending that everything’s going to be great.
The liberals OWN the media. It’s not hard to fall prey to their sniveling propaganda.
This CT shooting has put a bee in their nose, and they’re not going to calm down until they feel some form of victory. Their victory is a loss for freedom and common sense.
Deny them.
I used to be the pompous liberal know it all to some members of my family. I am truly sorry for my behavior. I have ended friendships in recent years since I have come into a different worldview. It is not because I hate them, just that they are actively hostile to some of my beliefs and values. I prefer to exclude bullies from my personal life.
The Reagan coalition has become the party of Mitt 47% Romney and Todd Rape Akin: a mess with sperm-is-sacred religious kooks and crony-capitalist “job creators” vying for control.
Funny, I have never met anyone who believes that sperm is sacred. As a matter of fact, it is difficult these days to even find a church that condemns abortion.
Yes, its true, were the party of “47%”
Democrats are now 53% whose votes were bought with food stamps, Obama Phones and a promises of even more free stuff.
A majority party, made up of irresponsible morons who cant feed themselves, pay their own way in the world, or dare be trusted with guns any longer.
Yup, thats the Political Majority now…congratulations on your “acomplishment”.
you really dont want to start naming names, do you?
Sheila Jackson Lee
Nancy Pelosi
John f’in Kerry, decorated vietnam vet
Harry Reid
Strom Thurmond

More people died in Ted Kennedy’s car…
who’s that Johnson guy in georgia?
Cynthia McKinney (and her father)
Joe (I’ll say anything once) Biden
Hillary (I’ll never testify) Clinton
I can go on for years. You, on the other hand…
thanks for playing today, and have a nice future.
Hard not to be depressed.
A marvelous nation has been destroyed and we are heading towards a civil war.
Makes it challenging to be chipper.
Orion
Thanks for the words of encouragement, Dr. Helen, but I don’t think this stuff falling from the sky is rain…
I’m taking a lot of joy in the fact that my prospects, and those of us in the demographic groups that voted for Romney, are still on the whole, pretty good, as far as our personal well-being. The people who are really screwed are those who voted for Obama, in terms of groups and states. More part-time jobs, more taxpayers fleeing for Texas. I still feel some sadness because they are my fellow countrymen and it’s always hard to let those sentiments go. But I think I’ll get past it eventually.
There are better things to do than agonize endlessly over things we can’t control. And some of those “better things” could result in conservatives and libertarians being the “last men standing” after the foreseeable disasters have come and gone.
Well, I read history, so I keep thinking it’s not so bad to be the Western Europe, falling away from the One,True Capital part. Eastern Europe sucked raw eggs for centuries. It’s still not thrilling.
France, otoh, rocked it for a millenium. I’m thinking Texas is bigger than France, and we got to keep Perry and Dewhurst.
I’ve gotten used to people making ass-clown statements to me: Suburban Republican conservatives are the WORST! PEOPLE! IN! THE! WORLD! or Christians are MEAN, JUDGMENTAL people! and I say. ” you know, you are talking about me, right?” I’m surprised at how often they don’t think they are talking about me, to my face.
Thank you for promoting attitudinal health.
One quibble: this gives many liberals free reign
should be “free rein”. Reign means kingdom, so the meaning is
not grossly changed, but the expression comes from riding horses,
as in “rein in” an impulse to drink to excess.
Thanks!
Even if you feel uncomfortable, even if you might wreck the holiday party, and even if it means you might be open to hostility like you have never seen before, speak up.
I see that you’ve hit on my plan on winning friends and influencing people. My wife is somewhat less than happy because she’s sweet and non-confrontational, but I’ve frankly had more than my fill of swallowing bullshit just because it might upset someone. In my opinion, that’s a bonus.
If other conservatives/Republicans are like me, Obama’s re-election was demoralizing. But Americans, especially young ones, made their choice and we all have to live with that choice for the next 4 years — and beyond, because it will have lasting consequences.
At this point, however, I’m not willing to continue to reach out to or dialogue with anyone who defends Obama (or anyone who defends people that voted for Obama) because choices have consequences. This election means I’m now in the minority so my side isn’t making the decisions, nor are we the ones who need to reach out to the other side. Worrying about what policies work and how Americans are affected by those policies is now the majority’s problem. For our country’s sake, I hope Obama defenders quickly realize how wrong his policies are for America, but the last election suggests they never will.
What’s weird is that I was dreading Thanksgiving (last year devolved into a left-right shouting match and I fled into the back yard to get out of the line of fire). This year I learned that the “left” in last year’s fight hadn’t even voted for Obama this time around. I had always thought her a “smart, but blind” lefty. Something pulled the blinders off before November 6.
If I only knew what it was…
physics geek,
I don’t believe in being non-confrontational with adults who raise serious topics in social settings. Of course, it’s essential to be calm and courteous in confronting them, but it’s a misguided sense of manners to think we must listen politely but can’t respond. A calm, reasoned voice should be welcome anywhere.
“…it’s a misguided sense of manners to think we must listen politely but can’t respond”
Damn straight..Lost the last couple ELECTIONS that way, didnt we!
Sometimes it helps to get your head out of the virtual world of the News and the Web and just look at what’s right in front of you. We’re so obsessed with “our world” – meaning everyone on earth’s world – that we forget that there is a private world, “my world,” the world we really and truly live in.
I’ve been through five Presidents in my adult life. I stop and ask myself “Has the real, material and emotional quality of my life been altered by any of these men?” And the answer is, “No.” I went about my business, they went about theirs.
Is America today everything I’d like it to be? No. Lots of stuff about it that I don’t like. There will be lots more after Obama gets through. But again, I’ll go about my business.
I prefer to live my life IN SPITE OF the government, not BECAUSE OF the government.
Not to be just too rude about it, but 5 would include Reagan, and if you think winning the Cold War didn’t alter the quality of your life, you are just plain ignorant.
Go ask people who lived through the crises of the Cold War (Cuban Missile Crisis being just the most well known), who built bomb shelters and lived under the daily stress of nuclear warfare, then come back and tell me getting rid of that didn’t alter the real, material and emotional quality of your life.
And that’s something the federal government was actually supposed to be responsible for – international relations. There are plenty of other examples (both positive and negative) since then.
In an age where the limits of government power over our lives have been eroded to barely identifiable nubs, who holds the reins of that power matters tremendously.
I understand the point you are making. You can’t let the actions of people you can’t control prevent you from doing the good that you can in the world as it is.
I have pretty much (happily) disengaged. My advice to everyone here is to turn off the TV and read some of the great books from Western civilization while they still exist and teach our children the values we hold dear. If we are not paying attention to their corruption and filth, then there is no need to be demoralized.
We all need to redirect our efforts into putting our own houses, families, neighborhoods, churches, and local communities in order and stop waiting for some mythical figure to ride into Washington and cleanse it of its corruption
Some of what is to come may be kind of fun. Obamacare is going to be a mammoth cluster and a huge disappointment to our socialist brethren. The people who brought us the US Postal Service are now trying to throw up a country-wide system of health-care exchanges that Obama voters think will be “free”. I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they find out it is expensive, mandatory, and sucks bigtime.
The present spending spree is completely unsustainable. Welfare programs that are “untouchable” now will be on the chopping block as borrowing costs eat up the federal budget. We are close to more down-grading of our credit rating, and it’s just a matter of time until Treasury buyers want more return to buy a riskier product. Loyalty to the Democrat Party will suffer when the freebies start to dry up.
Greetings all–
First, try this perspective: the best things in life–great art, timeless literature, music that you love, your favorite movies, the company of family and friends–are always available to you and access is in your control. You don’t have to listen to Chris Matthews or Sean Hannity. My brother cancelled the Washington Post the day after the election and started listening to classical music. Take back you consciousness.
Second, when you are ready, speak up. My wife listened to one her friends disparage Sarah Palin for a while, and then said, “I am surprised to hear you say that. What do you know about Gov. Palin that you dislike?” The woman had no answer other than that apprently Sarah had gone to too many colleges. My wife burst out laughing.
Third, you know what you know, and you know why you know it. You don’t have to apologize for anything. Never get angry because someone disagrees with you. Think of the most pursuasive arguments you can. If we all agreed about everything, the world would be a boring place.
Never, never, never be sad because others are fools. This election is a missed opportunity. There will be other opportunities.
Finally, do something you like this holiday season. My wife and I threw a Christmas carol party for 130 people last week. It is amazing the good cheer that singing familiar songs can bring to a group of adults–many of whom are agonostics, atheists and Jews as well as Christians. A good time was had by all.
Now is the time to be at your best.
Good advice, although it is a constant challenge to stay upbeat if one believes that Barack Obama is a bad and corrupt human being who must also be the luckiest man on earth. We all like to see bad guys seen for what they are and get what is coming to them. It would have been delicious to see him booted out of office. Apparently, he is never going to be held to account unless those who believe in a final judgment day are right.
It is one thing to accept that there is evil in the world, quite another that evil works so well for some people. I hope i’m wrong and the American people come to their senses and begin to see the truth about this terrible man whose pals are domestic terrorists and Chicago thugs.
Maybe this will help a little: I’ve long taken some comfort from a mystical teaching that even the most wicked of people do many good things in the course of a lifetime – caring for their own families, helping their friends, etc. (like you hear people say, Stalin loved little children and Hitler was kind to animals). But since there is no reward waiting for them on the Other Side, they must receive all the reward due them in this life. This has helped me understand the Clintons and their success, and now the Obamas, not to mention Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers. (Those lucky @$$holes got to dine with Andrew Breitbart! How’d they ever deserve that?)
It is demoralizing.
That’s why I went Galt: Signed up for every kind of government dependency I could, claimed unemployment for the first time in my life.
I hate my leftist countrymen. I despise them. I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t help them lie in the bed they made by sucking every drop of government assistance I can from their fat wallets. And I see no reason to fatten the government with my income so long as those turds remain in office. They have made it clear that they hold me in contempt, my culture in contempt, and everything I loved about the United States in contempt, and are doing their best to destroy the latter two.
And it looks like they’ve plausibly succeeded, in fact, in destroying everything I loved about the United States. It’s gone.
So now that there’s nothing good left to save, and only the bad remains, why not kick the bad part that remains. F*** this worthless pig of a country. I’d leave, but the whole goodness of the U.S. was that it was freer than other countries; now that it isn’t, that doesn’t make any other country suddenly free. The U.S. is now as bad as the other countries; but nothing about that makes the other countries suddenly as good as the U.S. once was. They’re all societies of subjects, not citizens. So why expend the effort to move elsewhere? Might as well remain someplace where I speak the language fluently and have no difficulties with the accent.
If the tide shows any signs of turning, I’ll re-engage. For the moment, I haven’t the surplus energy to do so. I’m done tilting at windmills: And if trying to exhort logical thinking and ethical behavior from the coddled and amoral 51% of America who voted for Obama isn’t quixotic, I don’t know what is.
I agree with you, the last country to be governed by a free people, our beautiful country, was the last refuge for those seeking liberty and opportunity. Brought down by Utopians. Libs, using the media as their shield, wrenched America from freedom loving people while we all had our heads down, working. Having known of the brilliance of our Founding Fathers, freedom lovers believed, mistakenly, that we could work hard, enjoy the fruits of our labor and trust the men in government to steer the ship of state.
We felt we could do this because we had the misguided confidence that the media would do their job. Surely, they would alert us and expose the corruption of our government. Cry wolf, so to speak. So, we labored on and lived our lives trusting in a media watchdog that was, itself, rotted. This media rot has lulled us into allowing so much that is wrong. Read Roger Simon’s (amazing) play “The Party Line” exposing the venality of members of the press. I wonder how much further back, prior to Duranty, that corruption extends?
Our schools were infiltrated and America’s children learned, not of her greatness, but of decadent liberal rot.
We noticed, but failed to act. Why, I wonder?
Over a period of time, our underclass was weakened and its family structure undermined. A race of people were corrupted into dependency, resentment, crime and violence.
We noticed, but failed to act. Why, I wonder?
Over a period of time, our government leaders became more and more unspeakable venal and self-serving.
We noticed, but failed to act. Why, I wonder?
Were we waiting for the clarion call from the media that never came? The clarion call that only came when a conservative looked likely to succeed in government? Instead of crying wolf, when there was indeed a wolf, didn’t the media have us look away from, take no notice of, the libs, while the libs methodically dismantled our freedoms.
Too late, too late. The poet Whittier once said, “”For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: “It might have been!”
Remember freedom, you serfs?
‘If the tide shows any signs of turning, I’ll re-engage.’
I say you all quit your jobs become leftists and go on welfare en masse!
But I’m going back to Winnipeg.
Dr. Smith:
I think its the Republicans who are demoralizing me. There seems to be very few who understand and will support and defend the ideals of small government, freedom and liberty.
So sad.
Go figure… I am a low-key, middle-aged, gay man living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I was born and raised here, and I can tell you flat out, that I have been the target of more verbal abuse, insults, degrading comments and downright threatening statements for being a conservative than I ever have for being gay! … Especially in such “tolerant” places as Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco.
For the record, I am against gay marriage (foolish, a mockery.. power of attorney is much better); I am against gays adopting; and I don’t believe in special hate crime laws. And Sarah Palin is tops. These things alone have made me persona non grata everywhere here.
I have loved taunting my liberal friends with the statistical fact that their precious ethnic minorities voted against gay marriage (to their credit) in California the same day they voted for Obama back in ’08.
You can probably guess that I have few friends anymore. I learned to go it alone years ago. And I like it. And I also don’t put up with cr*p. I have a mind like a steel trap, and a long, long memory, so just give me the signal, and I’ll shove it back in their lousy liberal faces without let-up.
You must have nerves of steel and a spine of tempered iron! From where do you get your strength?
You have an incredible story.
And you give me strength (i would have used the word “hope” but that word is dead to me -ha)
For there are times I wonder, have I done a disservice to my teenager? I wonder should I have allowed him to grow up with the liberal rot unchallenged so that he could happily blend in with the country when he takes his place in society? He often feels an outcast now. But that is pretty minor in comparison with your world.
If he matures with a small fraction of your strength of character he will be well served!
Wishing you all good things for the new year, sir.
Thank you for your respectful and uplifting comments, both you Jaynie (above) and Dr. Smith (below). I realized years ago that the societal institutions that benefit everyone (male-female marriage, good schools, strong churches, etc.) benefit me as well, so why should I demand such things accommodate me? As for my own burden, it’s the luck of the draw. It happens; there are worse things.
Early American educator Timothy Dwight said as much (I quote as accurately as I can recall): “It is better that individuals suffer than that institutions suffer.” When institutions are strong, individuals flourish. Now that liberals have destroyed every institution they have gotten their hands on, individuals and individualism are sitting ducks. Is it no wonder that death panels and casual abortion are on the horizon?
Clearly, I have no children, but Jaynie I don’t think your teen will turn out any worse for having been raised in liberal rot. I can remember when Feinstein, Boxer and Pelosi were merely local fool politicians; I thought they were crazy when I was a teenager. Now that I am fifty, I am surprised I was such a clear-eyed fifteen-year-old!
The key to it all, I think, is a healthy respect for money and budgeting and delayed gratification; those values affect every aspect of daily life. Merry Christmas and have a Great 2013 everyone
Michael G,
Unfortunately, many of us have to “go it alone” for some reason, though we are 47% strong. You are right about the peace though, it is better to live alone in peace than in a crowd in turmoil.
I agree, but the problem is some people won’t stop their badgering and bullying even after you cut them out of your life.
I must be way ahead of the curve. Stopped having liberal friends about fifteen years ago, and shortly thereafter stopped giving money to a church that was getting more liberal every minute. Nothing for me to get depressed about. Just keep pounding away.
I dunno. I have been given shit at my biggest client, with my friends, and this was the surprise — in my family. Seems a lot of people are vexed that I’m a Republican and top of that, I converted to Catholicism a few years ago. (The Catholic thing really bothers people.) They really don’t like the church’s politics; they don’t like that I’m conservative (even though I’m actually pretty moderate). All of them feel free to say the most horrible things about Republicans right in front of me, and take quite a few digs at the church, too.
I’m kind of stunned by the whole thing. One person (my father’s girlfriend) actually asked me if I read books or if I got all my information from Fox News, because the only way anyone could not for Obama is if they were ignorant. I’ve worked as a writer for 25 years and dropped out of an English Ph.D. program. I think I mighta read a book or two. And I stopped watching Fox News as soon as I realized they were doing Rupert Murdoch-style celebrity journalism more than anything. (Seriously — four hours of Paris Hilton’s arrest?)
Not only that, but they’re all freaking out about guns right now. So now apparently I am implicated in killing six-year-olds.
So yeah, I’m a little demoralized right now. I don’t have a lot of conservative friends and no one in my family, and it’s like everything that I’ve warned about in my life has happened. Plus, my house got socked with a hurricane and I have to do a ton of work, and have to deal with the fact that I really don’t know shit about home repair.
Sorry to go on. I feel like the liberals have won. Problem is, they’ll never stop. We saw that they wouldn’t stop with “choice” on abortion — they have to make us pay for it. They wouldn’t stop with “same sex” marriage — they have to ban types of therapy and drive the Church out of the adoption business. (In Canada, they’ve sued people for “hate speech” for publicly stating Biblical teaching on homosexuality.)
I’m not sure what the deal is. Just speculating, but I noticed that my nieces and nephews — their generation — they were in constant contact with their parents via cell phones. Much of their time was structured. They were educated in a PC environment where you could get in trouble for saying the wrong thing.
They grew up without a lot of unstructured free time, and the whole concept of letting your freak flag fly, and live and let live, it seems a little different for them. Maybe it’s just me. I love ‘em, don’t get me wrong. But they seem to be more directly social.
For example, while I was growing up, if you wanted to get into a football game, you’d just walk up to the high school or a local church field. The kids just gathered there, choose up sides and we played. I haven’t seen that happen for 20 years.
Very little idea of spontaneous organization and free play, or maybe it’s just different. Constant communication means not a lot of reflective time. Not many have really sat down and struggled with a book. They seem to be more accepting of authority and willing to follow directions and be told what to do. They expect it.
In any case, the world has changed, and I’m demoralized as hell. For me, it was the Obamacare decision, which I feel was an arbitrary, and the election. I really have to get over it. You only get one life. Can’t let politics get in the way of it.
And life in America ain’t like being a 19th Century Russian serf or living in a North Korean hellhole. I need to remember some context here.
I probably should start making gratitude lists.
Ack.
If it’s any comfort, your off-the-top-of-your-head writing, right here, is better than Larry McMurtry’s most recent memoir. So you’ve got skills and talent to keep you warm.
I don’t know how to link, but I’d link a photo of a drink of whiskey, a club chair, a cigar, and maybe an international newspaper to you, oh- slippers and a robe and warm flannel pajamas- so you could be warm, dry, pleasantly toasted, and reading about adventurers. It’s my wish for you, since I do like your writing.
Thank you so much, Ari. That boosted my morale. Cheers.
I B Bill: As to your self proclaimed lack of knowledge in home repairs, please allow me to put forth some suggestions. Utilise the fellowship of your church. No dobt there are people who are more familiar with home repair in your congregation. Ask around. Ask them if they would look over your shoulder, so to speak, as you do repairs. Advice and information on how to do a repair. Also utilize the web and look at youtube videos to get and idea of what you might be getting into before you start. Another way is to go to the neighborhood home improvement store and see what’s coming up on classes that are usually held on Sat. mornings. There is definitely a body of knowledge for you to avail yourself of if you ask.
Excellent suggestion. Thank you.
IB Bill, I have to agree with Ari about how well you write.
Best of luck with the home repairs.
Thanks, Jaynie

It’s the side effect of a larger middle class. The middle class is all about pretense, and inoffensiveness. Can’t make the boss angry now, can we? It’s in their very blood.
This is the true source of PC, the middle class is the death knell to the concept of the lone individual, going against the tide for what is right.
The middle class is killing freedom in this country. More poor people, could only be an improvement.
I’ve adopted as my motto, “Better here than Bangladesh.” It’s a start.
I’ve been to Bangladesh, and you are spot on. How the same ethnic stock as the Indians can so thoroughly screw up their country is appalling. However, there are worse places – I spent a lot of time in Djibouti, and did not like it, Sam I Am. Then it occurred to me that there are places even worse, and you can practically see them from there – fifteen minutes driving south and you’re in Somalia.
And then there’s North Korea, which is certainly the Most Evil Regime On Earth.
So yes, it could be a lot worse. And even if it gets worse, we probably will not find ourselves yearning for North Korea. And for a cold glimmer of satisfaction, consider who is likely to be left standing in a real SHTF scenario – you, or Obamaphone Lady?
Thanks, Dr. Helen. I think that you’re right and I welcome the encouraging tone but I won’t say that it isn’t hard to go through the day without feeling a little bit like I hardly recognize this place anymore. I really do appreciate your blunt but accurate phrase about the media’s and liberal’s hatred of Republicans. It’s time to just go ahead and say it; many who are left of center just hate conservatives and libertarians. I don’t think it’s even entirely politics. It’s part of the initiation into their club. It’s their groupthink. It’s their duty to make sure that you are aware of their disdain for your sincerely held beliefs. In return though, at least I can try to associate with and support those things that I find worthwhile while making an effort to refrain from supporting liberal projects or businesses. No one really has to subject themselves to films made by make believe leftist radicals and you’ll probably be happier and less miserable if you don’t.
I believe this makes a person much stronger to test their ideas with people who disagree at Christmas party and family holiday times and see if their idea stands the test of time or thrown in the garbage of history although prepare for the reaction from the demon possessed how they want to throw you in the trash can
However , after they murder you for your idea do not worry, this idea will come back to haunt them for eternity
What I find now with my idea after I share is 10,000 fall on my right and then 10,000 fall on my left who reject my idea. this is not good. What if 1 million begin to fall on my right them my left who reject my idea? Yikes!
So at the Christmas parties I go to and their is many I am invited to I serve the people believing human beings are sacred and one day all will be holy without effort on my part and then I discover the joy in serving others instead of having to murder their ideas even though this lust for murdering ideas still sneaks into my heart I must repent for
From God’s word the Bible
“Psalm 118:22-23
New International Version (NIV)
22 The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
23 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Thanks for the article, Dr Helen, I bet you have it quite right. As I hate to admit it, I am a former lib.
Born and bred in the crucible of liberalism, the northeast, tattooed with the democrat party affiliation even before baptism, I want to claim innocence and plead for the mercy of this commentariat. In trying to atone, I, a non-joiner, am now a tea party activist.
Need I tell you that I am considered an eccentric? Indulged as a joke of sorts, I make people laugh so that I do not have to argue. Oh, yes, I have that non confrontational trait as well.
Three stories:
1. I have, of course become accustomed to liberal speaking harshly against conservatives and Republicans. Their treatment of Palin still makes me nauseous. But, what is entirely new, and still has the power to shock me, is the complete freedom with which the very liberal hate, hate, hate, Mormonism. And I saw a lot of this long before Romney became Presidential hopeful. Their hatred was at a new level, one I’d never experienced. These libs would not dream of disparaging any other religion, even the much loathed fundamentalist Christian, with the vehemence they attack Mormonism. And they truly believe themselves to be benignly tolerant beings. What the heck is that all about?
2. My liberal family is completely besotted with the President. They NEVER kept photos around of previous democrat Presidents. Never mind making any attempt to discuss policy, they become irrational in a way I have not seen before. This, I think, has some tie in with race that I cannot seem to get.
3. Just like Lee Doren, of Youtube’s “How the World Works” channel, says he was, I was educated with zero exposure to conservative thinkers and writers. The richness of conservative thought amazes and delights me.
Take care of your hearts, everyone.
There has been some discussion about the tweets made by Erik Loomis, the history professor from the University of Rhode Island: some say he should be fired, some say he should be mocked. I believe that conservatives are so openly mocked because we have a higher sense of respect for other peoples’ rights. We believe in freedom of speech, so he should not be fired for his comments. But this is the problem, our own sense of dignity has been turned into a weakness. If this man was conservative, there would be an unified call for his expulsion. Leftists can openly abuse conservatives without repercussion while conservatives that speak out get major backlash. What this creates is an air of acceptance when it comes to abusing conservatives. That is why I believe that conservatives need to start fighting back much more vigorously. There should be a unified call for Erik Loomis’s dismissal on the grounds that someone that ideologically unbalanced would not be able to teach a true version of history. We need to stop being so gracious and make these outspoken leftists pay the same price that conservatives pay.
The day is coming when the race war will be overt. Black and white people will be killing each other in the streets. It’s inevitable. It’s what the racist in chief wants more than anything….to hurt white people.
Demoralized? Yeah. This country is over.
As someone who has been on both sides of the ideological divide, I can attest to the fact that it is indeed what pass for “liberals” these days who are the more insufferable and mean-spirited.
Still, this is not a constant 24/7 state of mind for liberals. My first Thanksgiving this year (I celebrate twice. Woo Hoo!) was entirely in the company of liberals, and I endured the triumphalism of those present with good grace. And speaking of “grace,” it was said over the dinner with us all holding hands. No, really, there are religiously-observant liberals. The Xmas party with mostly liberal guests, somebody innocently blundered into a political question, and that started a dispute. I made the mistake of suggesting that Obama was a Social Democrat. That turned out to be a “Faux Pas.” Here were all these people wanting eagerly to have a European-style government in America, and the were offended when I labeled their cherished wishes accurately? Sheesh!
My all-time favorite display of liberal arrogance and stupidity was at a dinner almost 19 years ago during the Hillarycare debacle. I had offered up the fact that one of the most cherished ambitions of Americans was to strive for prosperity. Wow, was THAT ever a big mistake. The word “prosperity” is offensive to certain “liberals!” So, I asked in exasperation, then what should Americans strive for? “Adequacy” was the answer. Seriously, “Adequacy.” Being as how the host who offered this substitute term owned a large house on a canal in Boca Raton, and that his 44-foot power boat was docked on said canal behind the big house, I asked him if “adequacy” including owning a 44-ft power boat and all the other posessions he had. His answer? No. He meant that “average” Americans should strive for a minimal lower middle class existence. IOW: there wasn’t enough to go around for others to enjoy his material gains or something. Farking arrogant insolent idiot. He is one liberal I cut ties with very quickly.
” Don’t be demoralized about your future, for we are 47% strong…”
Here is the problem. The Dems define themselves as the party of the Middle Class and the GOP the party of the Rich. This will intensify and this 47% number will not hold and if the Dems play their cards right they believe the GOP party of the rich end up at 30% in short time.
What to do?
There are 15 million illegal immigrants mostly Roman Catholic taht have been our great pressures turning closer to their faith or abandoning their faith believing it is a hopeless life and the Devil take over their lives yet God can restore them and their are maybe as much as 10 million more Christians who would vote GOP if they were the party represent the poor and most Jews would then vote GOP ans 95 % of Islam people would then vote GOP as GOP become the Abraham Lincoln party once again the man who free the slaves and poverty is a form of slavery . (The Christian rejoice as a slave who pray for a good Master like Jesus)
AS Far as Ayn Rand the GOP would be wise to listen to William Buckley I believe
footnote
this is good GOP is party of the Rich . Who is richer than God who looks out for the poor. The problem is if we go back into recession leading to depression this cliff is a good symbol of this , GOP will not win but the top gun leftist will and they will tip God upside down and shake all the money out of his pockets figure of speech so the friends of the Rich are the poor they help whereas the John Galts what purpose do they serve ?
I admire your spunk, Dr. Helen. I really do. But you’re fighting the wrong battle.
It’s not about Republican or Democrat, or even conservative or liberal, because there are liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats. It’s about establishment politics.
I consider myself a conservative libertarian, which I suppose would be a classical liberal at the time of the Founding. I’m about as anti-establishment as they come. I disdain partisanship, and I loathe the idea of a political aristocracy. I’m an individualist and a Constitutionalist. My basic philosophy is vote to against every incumbent.
It’s very rare that I vote for a politician more than once, unless he or she convinces me by legislation that he or she deserves my continued support.
I’ve voted for Rick Perry several times, probably more than I have for any other politician, because I think he does a good job. I voted for George W. Bush for governor and president. I voted for Reagan, George H. W. Bush (once), but I could not and would not vote for Bob Dole, John McCain, Newt Gingrich, or any other establishment candidate.
The problem the Repuclican party has is that it keeps trotting out these tired old candidates and making the same old arguments that the public is simply not buying. And these so-called conservative news shows, like O’Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh, and the like, have become lame.
Yeah, I voted for Romney (consider the alternative). But I didn’t vote for Drewhurst for Senate, even though he had Perry’s endorsement. I voted for Ted Cruz. It’s in politicians like him that the future lies.
The Republican party has to cut off the dead wood and discard the establishment, if they want to remain a viable party. Otherwise, they’ll be a minority for decades to come.
Individualism and Constitutionalism is the way to go. You’d be surprised how much support a movement like that would get. It only needs a spokesman.
Yeah, the left owns the media. So what? Most people don’t really pay much attention to the media these days. Yeah, the media trashes Republicans and “conservatism” every chance they get. They’re actually trashing the establishment. So, get rid of the establishment.
Oh, and my friends and relatives know better than to get into a political argument with me. As soon as they try, I just get up and leave, and I don’t go back. I don’t need for them to tell me how or what to think or believe, and I certainly won’t be insulted.
We have a private ballot in this country. And my vote is my choice alone. Most usually it’s against the incumbent.
“as soon as they try i just get up and leave and don’t come back”
most people unite when the cruel take over their lives not that they themselves don’t end up being cruel to others to defeat their enemies as I see in my great red-head beast saint sanctuary but that is where religion comes in so cruel has limits by victim avenging “red head” beast women as I see in my red-head beast saint sanctuary where Maureen Dowd has a nice place balanced by a conservative woman who is also willing to fight to the death unlike you fleeing with tail between your legs
Learn from history of this Bodicia red head pagan woman who raise an army of almost 300,000 to battle the cruel Romans, so she lost in the end , christian was not brought to her land at that time to serve her great passion for justice
reead here before you run with tail between your legs so you know why you are running way from this great red head beast woman

(she has good cleansing from 2000 years of afterlife)
I don’t consider myself a Republican. I consider myself an independent that is fiscally conservative, and socially, somewhat liberal… actually more of a Libertarian these days.
Still I’ve endured having to listen to liberal extremists in my family, who always have a scapegoat on the other side to blame for every thing they don’t feel is right.
I try not to argue or to tell them that they are wrong. I just bring up facts that contrast with their imagined claims. I send them links via email to official documents, statements that were made, or reporting that tells the whole story which show they what they believe is a myth.
I rarely get counterpoints back. I mostly get ad hominem attacks. Every negative trait that there is, I’ve been accused of embodying at some point or another, followed by the words Republican or conservative. I’ll leave out examples of the four-letter words, but I’m an insensitive conservative, a selfish Republican, a warmongering Republican, and ignorant, corporatist, lying, shill, uninformed, yada yada.
Presented with facts, or something that they have to read and maybe have to admit, these people find it easier to just go on the personal attack, and try to bully me into submission. LOL. It never works.
I reply and say, “Well I just gave you some points that say that what you said is false. Why are you shooting the messenger. Instead of attacking me, can you refute those points with actual facts?” This is when I usually get the four-letter adjectives hurled at me. At this point, I might mock them for their style of argument and tell them that they are sad examples and lack decency for the way that they cannot debate and can only be vulgar and bullying. That’s when they tell me to f***-off and keep me f***ing opinions to myself. Wait… My opinions? I didn’t give you my opinions? I gave you links to other documents which are facts, not opinions!! Then I’ll get “Well, you have your set of ‘facts’ and I have mine.” LOL! What!! There can only be one set of facts and one true reality. You can call stuff that’s made up in your own imagination or create a bubble that you’re living in a fact just because you hang out in a group of 47% that likes to agree on their own fictions about how the world should work according to them.
There is no winning. So my rules:
Stick to the facts.
Stay calm.
Wait for them to snap and go ad hominem.
Call them on it.
Insist that if they want to debate, they have to provide reasonable verifiable truths.
If they do, you’re talking with a moderate liberal and you’re lucky. Congratulations. If they escalate to the insults and become beligerant, point out that have forfeited by having nothing but personal insults which shows their intolerance and ignorance.
Stay calm.
Let them have the final word which will likely be more of the same.
Smile back. Optionally, a minor chuckle as if to yourself may be effective as a way of making them feel highly embarrassed at their own foolishness that they just put on full public display.
Move on…
This is all ok, I guess. For 1969 or so.
Really, why do you put up with it? Such people are not worthy of debate, they must simply be silenced. If your facts are so correct, why are you so powerless?
People on the right, libertarian side of things, must gain the will to power, or the enemy will come for us, one at a time. No more debates. Time to choose sides. The place to start this, is, of course, at family gatherings.
Until you lose friends, and family, over politics, you are not a man.
I always say, in many blue states it’s much easier to be gay or transgendered than conservative or libertarian.
Right after the 2004 election I was in Lexington, KY. In that red state I saw a number of Kerry stickers on cars that were unkeyed. I also saw some rainbow flags and pink triangles and wondered where the right wing lynch mobs were. How could such people survive in snake handling sister humping God bothering flyover country? Where were all the bitter clingers?
Meanwhile, my friend living in tolerant Seattle has had his yard signs stolen and vandalized and won’t put a political sticker on his car because it will certainly be keyed or worse.
From what I’ve seen, both side have become vicious about everything. It just happens that the left is in power at the moment.
Were things reversed, we’d be hearing about how put upon and down-trodden the liberals felt wrt things the right say about them.
Bad news: In every historical case I’ve examined, going back for centuries, public discourse containng this much vitriol has always led to civil war, revolts or rebellions. In short, it always leads to lots of running, screaming and dying.
Bad news: Neither side seems to really care, as long as their side isn’t the one that ends up on the losing end of all of that running, screaming and dying.
Being agnostic when it comes to political parties, Democrats and their snide comments bother me not at all. However, in the spectrum of objectionable behavior it is the people who profess to be Democrats, or Progressives, or Leftists who exhibit the most vulgar, profane, objectionable, and least tolerant behavior. All the while they demand tolerance (of others, I guess).
For some obscure reason that, maybe, Dr Helen can comment on, that same miserable bunch seems to believe that they command the moral high ground. They are quite at comfortable with abortions on demand, even of infants being born, yet recoil in horror at other kinds of killing. Not only that, they are quite comfortable with letting the mentally ill roam free, yet when some mentally ill person commits a horrible crime they freely blame anyone other than themselves.
I am pretty sure that they don’t know what hypocrites they are; in fact I’m pretty sure that the term hypocrite isn’t even in their lexicons — at least when it comes to describing themselves.
There has to be some form of mental illness at work there.
This is getting less and less true, in some ways.
Younger liberals, liberals under 30, are relishing in the idea of killing. They keep talking about how they can’t wait for everyone older than them to die off, and how anyone who disagrees with them needs to be killed.
Younger liberals are less horrified by killing than people like to think.
