This enjoyable book is one long obfuscation. The author throws sand in our eyes by examining all the colonial experiments in America which preceded the Plymouth colony, and then draws the conclusion that obviously Plymouth wasn’t really all that significant, but is just a cultural myth chosen at random.
He almost entirely ignores the fact that the United States is the political offspring of English culture, and that Plymouth was the first relatively successful English colony. He also gives barely a mention to the Mayflower Compact, a document of seminal importance in our history of self-government.
Andrew,
Wonderful as always. However- there is a typo on the “…every underlying principle” quote that appears at 3:01- “and” is misspelled as “amd.”

I recently read “A Voyage Long and Strange” by Tom Horwitz (I reviewed it here: http://brandywinebooks.net/?post_id=3890 )
