Brace yourselves for another controversy surrounding a police shooting. The Associated Press has an initial report of a man killed by police in an altercation involving a knife:

It happened in the city’s Canarsie neighborhood just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday while officers were responding to a report of an emotionally disturbed person.

Police say the man was shot in the chest and has been hospitalized. His condition is unknown.

One of the themes which has persisted among the anti-police Black Lives Matter crowd insists that police should seek to “deescalate” rather than shoot in situations where a suspect is unarmed or armed asymmetrically. Such critics fail to acknowledge or accept the established use of force continuum which has long been a staple of law enforcement. The objective of that continuum is to control threats, not offer fair fights. A suspect wielding a knife can expect to be shot, and the officers doing so should be hailed as heroes.
