The rich celebrity is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who at the peak of her run on Seinfeld made about $1 million per week. If the one-percenter thing is real at all, then she is in it. She would have us all know that the XL Pipeline currently under consideration is bad, because of Big Oil or something.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her role as Elaine on the popular sitcom “Seinfeld,” has released a video urging President Obama to reject the permit for the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. She joins a number of other celebrities and activists who have spoken out against the pipeline, and will be participating in the November 6 Tar Sands Action protest at the White House.
In the video, Dreyfus recalls when Obama said “Let us be the generation that ends the tyranny of oil.” But, she says, “Big Oil is still pretty much running the show.” She says that by rejecting the pipeline, Obama has a chance to “make good on [his] word.”
Louis-Dreyfus asks Obama, “Denying the permit for a brutally stupid, money-grab like the Keystone XL pipeline is a no-brainer, right Mr. President?”
The only no-brainer is JLD’s approach to energy. Big Oil isn’t “running the show” at all; Obama’s permitorium and slow permitting continue to cripple drilling in the gulf. For multi-millionaires like JLD that’s not much of a problem. For the rest of us, it bites hard every time we fill up our cars to get to work. And thousands of Americans remain out of work.
As for the XL Pipeline itself, JLD’s activism directly threatens about 20,000 more jobs, with another half million threatened indirectly.
For America’s skilled craft construction professionals, any discussion of the Keystone XL project begins and ends with one word: JOBS. Today, roughly 14% of the American construction workforce is unemployed — which is significantly higher than the overall national unemployment rate of 9%.
Throughout America’s Heartland, the Keystone Pipeline represents the prospect for 20,000 immediate jobs, and as many as 500,000 indirect jobs via a strong economic multiplier effect.
Meanwhile, the opponents of Keystone are descending upon Washington, DC for another demonstration against this important job-creating initiative. The unfortunate aspect of their opposition is that they are trying to kill the Keystone project by presenting the tired old false choice of energy vs. the environment.
Follow that link for a nice surprise — the author is a union man. The XL Pipeline divides Obama’s base between those who work for a living and those who get to pretend to care about those who work for a living.
