Netflix announces new ‘Pride and Prejudice’ redo: The Ultimate Golden Age vs. woke media litmus test?
Netflix, apparently not satisfied with the degree to which it had alienated its viewer base over the past decade with progressively cringier content, upped the ante last year with a series called “Lady Jane Grey,” an unbearably woke girlboss revisionist history that turned King Edward VI into a queer POC in a wheelchair.
Now, the network has its sites set on an undeniable literary classic, “Pride and Prejudice.”
Via Hollywood Reporter (emphasis added):
The streamer has greenlit a six-episode limited series based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden and Olivia Colman are set to play lead roles in the series, which comes from writer Dolly Alderton (the BBC’s Everything I Know About Love) and director Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). BBC Studios’ Lookout Point is producing the series, which is set to begin filming later this year in the U.K….
‘Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,” Alderton said in a statement. “Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”
Given that this is the first major reimagining of a European classic in the Golden Age, might we consider this a litmus test of how far off DEI has fallen?
How many of its characters will be gay, transgender, or non-binary?
How many will be Persons of Color™ in a time and place (19th-century Britain) where there were no POCs, and certainly none in the landed gentry?
How many will be autistic or otherwise neurodivergent?
Time will tell.
I’m not generally a huge fan of the romantic comedy genre, but I have to admit that I did greatly enjoy “Pride and Prejudice.”
No matter woke or unwoke, I’m fairly confident the Netflix reboot will disappoint fiercely — and not just because it’ll turn all the characters into diverse eunuchs — but there’s always hope.

So far, the fifth anniversary festivities appear to lack the “fiery but mostly peaceful” fireworks of the 2020 days.
In death, George Floyd achieved what perhaps no other mortal ever has: martyrdom via drug overdose.

Never one to miss an opportunity to pimp racial strife in front of a camera, Al Sharpton’s walking, talking desiccated corpse put in an appearance, at which time he likened the George Floyd overdose to Emmett Till, a black boy killed extrajudicially by a mob in Mississippi in 1955, and a slew of other obscure references to other 60s-era civil rights figures and events.
