Days after a New York Times story outlined how U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson used his congressional post to promote a hedge fund he operates, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is calling for him to drop out of the U.S. Senate race.
Grayson denied wrongdoing in the story, which detailed how he used his official congressional title and extensive travel as a member of Congress in hedge fund marketing documents.
Reid said on Friday that Grayson has “no moral compass” and called for him to drop his bid against fellow Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy. The statement was first reported by the Associated Press.
“His actions aren’t just disgraceful to the Democratic Party, they disgrace the halls of Congress,” Reid wrote.
Let us all take a moment to remember where we were when we first learned that Harry Reid found fault with a politician who wasn’t a Republican.
In an era when the Democrats are trying to elevate Hillary Clinton–aka “The Worst Clinton”–to the presidency one could easily assume that there is no behavior among their own that Democrats could possibly find objectionable.

This probably has more to do with the fact that the Democrats would prefer Rep. Patrick Murphy to be the one who wins should they prevail in picking up Marco Rubio’s seat. Murphy is newer to Washington and is more “malleable,” as Jimmy Carter would say. Grayson has always been an obnoxious headline grabber, and Senate Dems already have a Chuck Schumer, thank you very much, so they don’t need to import one from the other side of the capitol.
Even if Grayson should uncharacteristically be a team player and drop out, it’s not likely he will be shunned by the Democrat tribe for long. The appearance of wrongdoing isn’t really detrimental to a Democrat’s political career, as Mrs. Bill has proven time and again.
In fact, it might even make Grayson the frontrunner for the 2020 nomination if the Democrats don’t win this year.
