President Barack Obama paused between party fundraisers and his close vacation today to deliver a statement on the shootdown of MH17. Russian proxies are the prime suspects, having used Russian missiles to blast the civilian airliner out of the sky.

The president noted that one American is believed to have died in the disaster. He described MH17′s demise as a “global disaster” because an Asian airliner carrying citizens of many countries was shot down over Ukraine. He also noted that over 100 of the flight’s passengers were flying to a conference on the fight against AIDS. Calling MH17 a “global disaster” tugs at the entire world outside Russia to be outraged, but America will still have to lead.

Obama called for a cease-fire in the war in Ukraine. He also called for the crash site to be left intact so that evidence is not tampered with.

The latter is already a dead letter. The site is already contaminated as far as its evidence value goes. The Russian proxies have controlled the crash site from the beginning and have reportedly already found the black boxes and sent them to Russia for investigation. The proxies have been combing through the wreckage, moving it and tampering with it. They are very likely combing the wreckage for any remains of the missile that brought the aircraft down. That evidence could be used to determine whether the missile was fired by the proxies or by the Russians themselves.

The former, a cease-fire in Ukraine, is probably the worst idea that President Obama could have proffered.

Russian President Vladimir Putin started the conflict in Ukraine. The “separatists” there are his minions, his proxies. Russia’s proxies, the so-called separatists, are commanded by current and former officers in Russian intelligence. They have carved off part of eastern Ukraine and are calling it the Donetsk Republic. They are using Russian weaponry. They are backed by Moscow.

Ukraine’s government is fighting to defeat them and reclaim its territory. A cease-fire would stop Ukraine from protecting its sovereignty when it is winning the war against Russia’s puppets. It would hand Russia de facto control of another chunk of Ukraine’s territory, to go along with the Crimean Peninsula which Russia seized by force months ago.

A cease-fire helps Putin. Calling for the crash site to be uncontaminated makes no sense.

At least Barack Obama strongly defended Israel’s right and duty to launch its military operations against Hamas. The world got that from the president’s statement, and it was needed and it was clear.

But we didn’t get much else.

Update: Obama’s Statement on MH17 Was Even Worse Than I Thought

The speech would have been funny were it not for the grim circumstances. Fred Thompson on the FOX news gang noted that it was Samantha Power who earlier had made a more "presidential" speech than her boss and unfavorable comparisons were made to Ronaldus Magnus' outraged speech over the KAL007 shootdown of thirty years ago.

Obama was ludicrously mealy-mouthed about how many Americans died. We already know damn well it was twenty-three. Twenty-three passengers presented Malaysian Airlines with American passports while buying their tickets. Whether or not one of them may have had dual citizenship should be beside the point to President Permiso of all people.

Either way, one did not need a doctorate in geopolitics from the Kennedy School of Government to notice the knots Obama tied himself into in trying to avoid fingering Putin for any responsibility in the carnage. We already have the incriminating phone recordings and boastful initial tweets from the separatist leaders early yesterday. Make no mistake, this is not a welcome distraction from the Border Collapse, this just adds to it. Barry would do anything to make this just go away. About the best he can do is to mount investigations and inquiries and keep them up for as long as possible until the whole thing blows over...or so he hopes.

Speaking for myself, I don't see how he would dare to make trouble for Pooty. Is there anyone here who does not think that ol' Vlad has a bundle of good stuff on Our Barry?

Dateline 2008: I voted McCain but was happy for my good Black friends who've hoped
And prayed for such a day. They were
Rightfully proud. And honestly I hoped Obama would be good for America, in spite
Of his past associations etc...
Dateline 2012: I am embarrassed by America, at least the ones
Who doubled down on four bad years of bad policy and Anerican retreat
From the world. For the first time in my life I'm not
Proud of my country.
Dateline July 18, 2014: I'm no longer embarrassed, disappointed, or
Ashamed of Obama, the leftist media enablers, and Usual uber-liberal toadies.
I'm Angry, no, outraged ! And doubly embarrassed especially
For all the good Black friends of mine. What a cruel joke!

Barry is indeed pushing this away hoping it will go away.
He is not interested in international crises. He is worried about his vacation, golf, eating ice cream and avoiding the battle ax for 16 days.

The title of the article betrays logic. What does "betrays incoherence" mean? If incoherence is betrayed, that actually means the author feels Obama's comments were coherent.

"It takes weeks to get trained to use the Buk effectively."

I am certain that every veteran of the Russian military, as well as veterans of related militaries using Russian built equipment, knows that fact and some can prove it...

Just the fact that he used the word "disaster" shows his cluelessness and incompetence, failure to understand the world, his immaturity....the list goes on. This was not a "disaster," which would imply an act of god (I'm an atheist, so the lower case "g"). It was an "atrocity," which implies a deliberate act. If that distinction is not both understood and applied to the situation, then Obama is exposing the child-monarch that he is.

The destruction of the jetliner was a criminal act by Russian separatists interfering with the sovereign rights of the Ukraine. The fury in Australia and Holland will more than make up for any lack of action by Obama.
Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confronted Russian diplomats to be told it was the Ukaine's fault. She and Prime Minister Tony Abbott have made clear they don't believe this for a second.

Let's stop fooling ourselves. The rebels are led by Russians, Russian citizens, former (and perhaps current) military and intelligence officers. The SA-11 battery was only brought to Ukraine from Russia in the last few weeks. It was most definitely NOT captured from Ukraine. It is a highly sophisticated mobile missile launcher. It takes two years to train a crew to properly operate it. No band of ragtag local thugs would even know what they were looking at inside the cabin. The trigger was pulled by a boneheaded Russian (no ethnic Russian, but Russian national) military crew.

Ceasefire, huh? Boilerplate nonsense. Sounds like you're saying something significant, when you are not. Ceasefires have to have a specific purpose. They are not a good thing unto themselves. For understanding, how many "ceasefires" have we seen in the Middle East?

Btw, the word used to be armistice, back when words meant things.

a ceasefire precedes an armistice, which can codify the ceasefire but falls short of a treaty (which is the last elevation of the sequence)

In order to facilitate that investigation, Russia, pro-Russian separatists, and Ukraine must adhere to an immediate cease-fire.

When Obama had his open mike moment with Medvedev, saying that he would be more flexible after his second election, everybody thought he was talking about US missles in Europe. I always figured he was talking about how much more he could destroy the United States' energy production so there would be no competition for Putin's Russian Oil (hmmm that could also explain why Obama has thrown the Middle East into chaos), but, after today's events, Obama looks REALLY flexible tying himself into knots...
