Koch: I'm Fighting to Restore a Free America Against the Likes of Barack Obama and Harry Reid

Sen. Harry Reid’s obsession with the Koch brothers has finally stirred a response. Charles Koch writes in the Wall Street Journal that he is using his own money to restore freedom.

I have devoted most of my life to understanding the principles that enable people to improve their lives. It is those principles—the principles of a free society—that have shaped my life, my family, our company and America itself.

Unfortunately, the fundamental concepts of dignity, respect, equality before the law and personal freedom are under attack by the nation’s own government. That’s why, if we want to restore a free society and create greater well-being and opportunity for all Americans, we have no choice but to fight for those principles. I have been doing so for more than 50 years, primarily through educational efforts. It was only in the past decade that I realized the need to also engage in the political process.

A truly free society is based on a vision of respect for people and what they value. In a truly free society, any business that disrespects its customers will fail, and deserves to do so. The same should be true of any government that disrespects its citizens. The central belief and fatal conceit of the current administration is that you are incapable of running your own life, but those in power are capable of running it for you. This is the essence of big government and collectivism.

Harry Reid’s latest: Suggesting that the Koch brothers aren’t paying their taxes. Reid’s evidence: None. It’s based on a smear first floated by Austan Goolsbee, who was an Obama administration official at the time.

The smear is the current regime’s preferred method of kneecapping opponents. Reid did the same thing to Mitt Romney in 2012, again with absolutely no evidence. That didn’t stop Sam Stein at the Huffington Post from running with it and turning it into a hit on Romney.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood did it to non-union Toyota, while the Obama administration may have been covering up union shop GM’s deadly ignition switch flaw.

Obama himself sets the tone, when he smears opponents of Obamacare as “working hard to deny people insurance” and the like. That’s a smear and a lie and he knows it. But he puts it out there and his supporters run with it, either because they think it’s true, or they know it isn’t but they don’t care about truth any more than Obama does.

At some point there has to be some accountability for all these smears. We have a gangster government. Someone has to fight back. The way I see it, the Koch brothers are among the few American patriots out there who have the means to fight back against this government, so they do.
