“Affects”? This is what we get when 3×4 can equal 11 if you just make a good enough argument.

"More than 57,000 pre-K children are feeling the "display of emotion" of the sequester." So, the sequester is emo and the kids are getting tired of its moodiness?

This is if we're being grammatically correct...if we simply add in the most common definition of affect, we get...

"More than 57,000 pre-K children are feeling the "cause something to change" of the sequester." Wha?

We should keep in mind that those who have write access to Obama's various feeds are most often graduates from our most famous universities. Ironically, very likely to have been English lit majors.

I'm rather impressed that the mistake was a relatively subtle one like "affects" vs. "effects". I get a lot more discouraged when I see really simply words being confused. Unfortunately, I see that VERY frequently.

Examples:
This office is closed _do_ to severe weather. (should be "due").
The ant can drag _it's_ own weight. (should be "its").
This dessert is _to_ sweet. (should be "too")
PJM _your_ the best. (should be "you're").

With common core you won't have to make a good argument about 3x4 = 11. All you have to do is feel good about it.

The challenge would be finding a teacher who can even catch the mistake. I'm not sure they're math is any better than the average child's.

I recently discovered that some high school graduates that cannot multiply by TWO let alone make change without the cash register doing the calculation for them.

Nope. Math are hard. English are good.
(Unless, of course, you're from an Ivy or modern "Liberal" educational institution.)
