President Obama promised the American people in early 2009 that he would cut the deficit he inherited in half by the end of his term.
But like hope, change, and the rest of the president’s broken promises, he has honored this pledge in the breach.
Phil Klein at The Examiner:
The Congressional Budget Office on Friday reported that the federal government ran a $1.1 trillion deficit in fiscal year 2012, making it official that President Obama broke his promise to cut the deficit in half within his first term in office.
On Feb. 23, 2009 (a month into his presidency) Obama convened a “fiscal responsibility summit” in the White House, and declared, “[T]oday, I’m pledging to cut the deficit we inherited in half by the end of my first term in office. Now, this will not be easy. It will require us to make difficult decisions and face challenges we’ve long neglected. But I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot repay — and that means taking responsibility right now, in this administration, for getting our spending under control.”
Two weeks before Obama was sworn into office — the CBO released projections for the upcoming decade that took into account all of President Bush’s decisions as well as the ongoing collapse of the U.S. economy. At the time, the CBO projected deficits of $1.186 trillion in 2009. This is the deficit Obama can reasonably claim he inherited.
Reducing the deficit by 50 percent by the end of his first term would have brought the fiscal 2012 deficit to $593 billion. Instead, the CBO reported today that it was $1.090 trillion, or 8 percent less than the one he inherited. The Obama administration ran deficits of over $1 trillion for each of his years in office, for a total of about $5.1 trillion.
Obama’s defenders might argue that at the time he made that statement, he didn’t grasp the full extent of the economic crisis. The problem with that argument is that he continued to restate that pledge even after the economic picture deteriorated further.
As late as July, 2010 the president continued to tell the American people that he would cut the deficit in half by the end of his term. Just goes to show that an Obama “pledge” is simply one more talking point in a failed narrative.

Is there anybody in America that actually believed ObamaRx cares one bit about cutting the deficit? If there is, I’ve got this beachfront property not far from Tuscon…….
To believe that a far left Democrat will cut the deficit one penny one has to believe that the military is eating all our surplus money, that America is the world’s bully, that dictators like Chavez are really just fuzzy little angels who want the best for their people, that Islam is a religion of peace, on and on and on ad nauseum – oh, wait, millions of vapid fools really do believe those things. In this upside down world we live in they are called liberals.
The President and his bagmen in the Senate have broken the law by not producing a MANDATORY budget.
The President’s budget was so unserious, not even his own party would give it a single vote.
You can’t reduce a deficit you have no intention of even addressing. The small c communists continue to lie to the American people. Some myopic moral relativists continue to revel in ignorant “he’s just in over his head” blather.
The failure to bring a budget to the Senate floor is an act of defiance so destructive to our self-governance, it is nothing short of treason. In an economic crisis, this “Democratic” Party would rather destroy this country than face it with its cards face up on the table.
It is not the proper analysis whether Obama’s “pledge” was “broken”, but whether it ever existed in the first place.

By simultaneously gutting the military, strangling energy production, regulating and taxing small business into paralysis, lying about job creation, lying about a non-existent “recovery” and refusing to submit a budget for amendment and exploration…the “Democratic” Party has sold this nation down the redistributionist river and they lie in our faces that they are doing that precise thing.
We do ourselves no favors by listening to the moral relativists who refuse to see the fall for what it is. Fatal.
