Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that first lady Michelle Obama “knocked it out of the park” with her speech last night because she showed “the average middle-class person that we’re going to do more for them than the other side.”
“It wasn’t just, ‘I love my husband and he’s a great guy and great father.’ Mrs. Romney did that, too,” Schumer said last night on MSNBC. “But she tied it to what average people go through.”
“She talked about the student loans that they had when they got out of school. The Romneys wouldn’t know what a student loan was if it stared them in the face,” he continued. “…The Romney speech was sort of way up there and it was nice, but it wasn’t close to this.”
Schumer said he’s excited about how the speech set the tone for the convention, showing “that we are connecting to average folks and feel their pain and their anguish.”
“She had those digs when she talked about when you make it, you don’t slam the door on people trying to make it. Well, that had direct implications, but people got what it did,” he said. “And I will tell you something else. Some people say, well, maybe she’s angry. Maybe she’s upset. She was a powerful person and a strong person, but a nice, caring person. There were tears in her eyes.”
