Yesterday I noticed this banner ad for the first time, on the New York Times’ website:

When we’ve shared photos of Bo over the last few months, we’ve learned two things. One, there are a lot of First Dog fans out there. Two, there is an enthusiasm for this campaign that extends to the furriest members of your families.

That’s why we’ve launched Pet Lovers for Obama, a special way for pet lovers like you to be a part of this campaign.

Say you—and your pets—are in for 2012 now.

The campaign is likely jumping on a survey last month by Democratic pollster Public Policy Polling, which found that 20 percent of voters surveyed have a favorable opinion of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s treatment of dogs and 29 have an unfavorable opinion. Romney once put the crate containing his Irish setter, Seamus, on the roof of the family car for a 12-hour ride to Canada. The story even became fodder in the GOP primary: “As far as Seamus the dog, look, all I would say is, the issues of character are important in this election, and we need to look at all of those issues and make a determination as to whether that’s the kind of person you want to be president of the United States,” Rick Santorum said.

The PPP poll found that 44 percent have a favorable opinion of President Obama’s treatment of dogs while 14 percent had an unfavorable one.

Sixty-eight percent of voters — 74 percent Democrat, 63 percent Republican and 66 percent independent — said it’s inhumane to put a dog in a kennel on the car roof, while 14 percent said it’s humane.

“Most of the people who say the Seamus incident makes them less inclined to vote for Romney aren’t voting for him anyway though,” PPP said.
