Norway’s tabloid-TV station TV2 claims to have IDed the perpetrator of today’s terror attacks:
Anders Behring Breivik, 32-year-old right-wing extremist, arrested in attacks

(Translation from Norwegian via Google Translate):
The 32-year-old Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik set Friday night in a police interrogation after he was arrested after the shooting of vermin.
According to TV2′s sources, the arrested belong to the right-extremist groups in eastern Norway, and the man must have registered two weapons on their name – an automatic weapon and a pistol of the type of Glock.
32-year-old created in 2009, a company that would engage in the cultivation of vegetables, melons, roots and tubers, which means that he may have had access to fertilizer – a well known ingredient in the manufacture of a bomb.
According to sources such as TV 2 has talked with the bomb that exploded in the government building a fertilizer bomb.
Breivik will be conservative, Christian, and may have a connection to the extreme right environment.
The man owns a farming business in eastern Norway, and the man’s Facebook page says it listed that he has studied in Oslo Handel. His interests, according to Facebook profile, both involving hunting and bodybuilding.
HOWEVER, note the odd detail that he was arrested “after shooting vermin.”
This jibes with a little-noticed news update on the Utoya summer camp Web page, posted (apparently) right around the time of (and possibly even before) the terror attacks:
An armed person has been arrested after a shooting at vermin.
An armed person has been arrested after a shooting at vermin. Participants of the camp will be collected on Sundvollen Hotel (or Ringerike Hotel on the former is full) where they are met by police and health professionals.
We are working to obtain an overview of the situation.
So: Is this just a problem with the translation software, and by “vermin” they mean “victims”? Or could it be that Breivik was just a farmer out shooting at moles or rabbits in the wrong place at the wrong time?
More details almost certain to arrive soon. Any clarifications you have, please post in the comment section below.
Update I:
Vancouver Sun: Andres Behring Breivik named as suspect in Oslo bombing
The Daily Mail has more info, but does not mention right-wing connections
Update II:
Swedish news site Expressen has more unsourced details:
Anders Behring Breivik, 32, is suspected of attacks in Norway
According to Norwegian TV2, he belongs to right-wing circles in Oslo.Anders Behring Breivik was arrested after the massacre of Utöya and also suspected to be behind the bomb in Oslo.
Late last night police carried out a search of his apartment.According to Norwegian TV2, he belonged to right-wing circles in East Iceland – the part of the country where, among other things Oslo included. He will also have two arms – an automatic rifle and a pistol – registered on it.
Although it seems he does not have a criminal history. According to VG, he is only convicted of minor traffic offenses, which also took place for over ten years ago.
Anders Behring Breivik has been active in various right-wing forum in Norway and he has among other things, wrote that the fight is between nationalism and internationalism. According to VG, he calls himself a nationalist. He has also written a number of Islam-critical posts.
On Facebook, he writes that he is a director and has studied economics and religion. Six days ago he created a Twitter account where he as VG has only written a post, a quote from philosopher John Stuart Mill.
According to VG 2009, he started a company engaged in growing vegetables. Through the company he has been able to access large amounts of fertilizer – which can be used to make car bombs.
According to Anders Behring Breivik Facebook page, he is single and listening to classical music. Among the interests he writes, including hunting, e-sports and political analysis.
He was interrogated during the night of the Norwegian police. It is currently unclear what emerged during the interrogation.
Update III:
In the space of a few minutes, Breivik already has his own wikipedia entry (!!??!!?!?!), which mentions that he is a freemason and a fan of “Norwegian anti-nazi World War II hero Max Manus.”
I’ll post more later when my head stops spinning.

If he was a farmer shooting at vermin, why wasn’t he doing it on his own land? And why are there at least 9 dead young people?
Just what immediately springs to mind. I don’t know one word of Norwegian, I fear.
Zombie, great observation. As soon as you raise the point, one can see the possibilities for accusations and misidentification. Sounds like a classic suspense movie plot.
My favorite line of the translation: “According to sources such as TV 2 has talked with the bomb that exploded…”
That must have been a very interesting conversation.
The first sentence should translate as: “An armed person was arrested after a shooting incident on Ut Island.”
That translation is wildy off. The sentence says: A person was arrested after a shooting incident on Ut Island.
Sorry. I thought the internets gobbled up my first comment.
Zombie – via Mikal M (you remember him?), this link: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/07/23/article-2017709-0D1F33FB00000578-704_306x512.jpg
Evidently, the suspect is a Freemason!
I can hardly wait for some of the loonier fringes of the blogosphere to find this!
“”Is this just a problem with the translation software, and by “vermin” they mean “victims”? Or could it be that Breivik was just a farmer out shooting at moles or rabbits in the wrong place at the wrong time?”"
This is the stupidest comment I have ever read. Funny though.
This story reads like it went through some type of translation program that converts Norwegian to English.
Er…that’s because it was. As zombie wrote: “(Translation from Norwegian via Google Translate):”
Zombie is clearly a highly intelligent, observant and clever member of the undead, but has never (to my knowledge) claimed a knowledge of Norwegian.
Yes, Google Translate is translating “Utoya” as “vermin”. I don’t know if that’s how the name of the island would actually translate into English, but obviously it’s distorting the translation. “Shooting of vermin” should read “Utoya shooting”.
That’s what I suspected. I tried to deconstruct the sentence that Google Translate was screwing up, and it seemed to narrow down the problem to the word “Utoya.” Apparently the real spelling of the island is “Utøya,” and the crazy Norwegian version of “ø” threw the translation software for a loop, and in desperation it latched on to the next best thing, probably some obsolete Norwegian word that meant “vermin” and was spelled with a regular “o”.
Dianna is correct: I don’t know Norwegian!
“Utøya”
I don’t know Norwegian, but I do know the Norwegian word for “island” is “øya”.
Therefore, the proper translation is Ut Island.
.
“Utøya” translates roughly to outer-island. Ut=out, øy=island. I do speak Norwegian and I’ve been following closely. We are all Norwegians today.
Anti-Nazi? He’s an anti-Nazi? What does that make me?
The Left will take this blue-eyed devil and run very far with it til every white guy in the world will be expected to hang his head in shame and maybe write out some kind of apology in their own blood.
Ironically, that will be making an argument that so-called Islamophobia is actually right on the mark since, for every Anders Non-Hitler in existence, there are 100 Mohamed Non-Jew Haters.
The Left in Norway will use this to put down any slightest insult to muslims and maybe import another couple million just to show how racist they really ain’t. The non-Nazi just guaranteed another 40 years of arrive/welfare/complain.
… and the Right will do anything, say anything, to make sure that they never have to even consider acknowledging that somebody who believes what they believe could ever do anything wrong at all, and that the problem is with The Left. The Left will exploit…The Left will run with this, even though The Left is the most evil thing ever…
I understand your disappointment that the killer was not a Muslim, although I’m sure you’re still hoping that the guy had some relative somewhere who was a Muslim. This must be a very difficult time for you.
I’m not disappointed. I made no posts about who did this. I figured it was probably muslims but I didn’t go off half-cocked either.
I have no interest in making muslims look worse or better than they actually behave. Whatever they actually do is what I want to know and let the record reflect.
What I’m saying is that the opposite will happen on the Left. They will be ecstatic and lap this up for all it’s worth. Use your brains, institutionalized racist laws are coming from the Left and not the right and the same is true of hate speech.
I’m not the one gerrymandering laws to decriminalize laws that affect white people, black folks and the Left are doing that for black folks based on the assumption that millions of whites are simply racist. I’m not the one insisting on special laws for college admissions for whites, the Left and black folks are doing that for black folks. I’m not the one acting shocked because there is a larger police presence at SF transit stations in black neighborhoods, the Left and black folks are acting like it’s evil white people who simply want to construct ghettos, keep black folks down.
The Left muzzles any conversation about muslims as if they’re just another round of immigrants like all the others before them and with the same issues except they blow stuff up. Wake up.
Any moron with half a brain looks for patterns in behavior as opposed to none. There are no white, Christian terrorists blowing up muslims and there is a pattern in the other direction; Islamophobia is a myth. There is not a single anti-black web site in the United States with mainstream advertising and there are dozens of anti-white sites with not only mainstream advertising but the entirety of the black elite in America taking part.
The Left will run with this story as a pattern when in fact there is no pattern of behavior to look to. Look how desperately the Left tried to shoehorn the mental case in AZ onto Sarah Palin and the Right. Even 6 yr. olds weren’t fooled.
Who says ABB believes what I believe? Or Belle believes? Or zombie believes?
Frankly, about the only thing I have any confidence in is his Freemasonry, which leaves me confused as all get out as to why he took up killing people – it’s not a usual masonic activity. What he believed or subscribed to is unclear, at this point.
What would be nice would be to know what he says. If he’s like McVeigh, they will practically have to gag him to get him to shut up.
La Belle Nightjar: “The Left will take this blue-eyed devil and run very far with it …”
Right, it’s the left’s fault that this guy shot their children. Do you ever listen to yourself?
It’s amazing how so many people here insisted it must be an act of Islamic terrorism, but as soon as its revealed to be an act of Conservative terrorism — committed by someone sharing your own ideology — suddenly you go into denial with conspiracy theories or insisting that it was a lone crazy.
It’s puzzling that so many of you disown this guy. How many times have you thought, wrote or said anything like, “Hey, we should kill all those lefties! Show them libtards who’s boss! If we can’t beat them at the ballot box, we’ll beat’em with the bullet box! Second Amendment Remedies, libtards!” Well, he carried it through. So why disown him?
A little self-reflection might be in order, don’t you think?
You seem to have no problem attempting to blame some “right-wing conspiracy” or some such. Do you ever listen to yourself. You’re sounding like a racist and a hater. And you like double standards. Sounds like a liberal.
I am relieved that he is a right-winger, however misguided he may be. I am relieved that it was NOT yet another Islamic attack.
I also hope that this leads to a proper view of terrorism. I hope nations can now get together and declare terrorists to be, like pirates, Enemies of Humanity. I am glad that it is some blond-haired, Nordic right-winger. Now they will not have to reflexively defend Islam, and we may get some progress on legality vis-a-vis terrorism.
This whole thing was really weird. What was he hoping to accomplish? Why did he not go after the voices of the Left, if he hated them so much? Did he think to hurt Leftists even more by going after their children? Did he think he was nipping the little Leftists in the bud? Or did he just think he could kill a lot more when they were so far from any help? Insanity. Just insanity.
“It’s puzzling that so many of you disown this guy.”
So . . . if a conservative said, “Hey, good job dude!” you would approve of that sentiment? Did you ever think that conservatives (and everyone else) “disowns” him because he did NOT act in line with their views?
“How many times have you thought, wrote or said anything like, ‘Hey, we should kill all those lefties! Show them libtards who’s boss! If we can’t beat them at the ballot box, we’ll beat’em with the bullet box! Second Amendment Remedies, libtards!’”
Zero. How about you?
“A little self-reflection might be in order, don’t you think?”
Why do you assume that every conservative, if only she or he engaged in “self-reflection,” would realize that they are in fact homicidal maniacs? Do you honestly think that every single person who identifies as “conservative” must be a violent extremist? Is it so hard to believe that someone could disagree with you and still be a good person? That seems to be an reasonable position, and is probably not true–a little self-reflection might be in order, don’t you think?
*unreasonable
YES! Vermin is horribly wrong! I am Norwegian and I can tell you that the name of the island is Utøya, which means “the outer island”. Howver, google must have confused it with the Norwegian word “utøy”, which means vermin! Never trust google translate!
The “ø” in Utyøa means island in Norwegian. Will you please please allow me to translate the whole story for you?
Go for it. Post in in the thread.
What I posted earlier today now applies more than ever:
Like Ted Kaczynski, this man is insane. Shame on everyone who seeks to exploit Norway’s tragedy for ideological ends.

you are correct people shouldn’t jump to conclusions.
….even when 99% of all terrorist attacks are perpetrated by the followers of that cult know as islam doesn’t mean all of them are. one or two a year aren’t.
so remember that even though almost all terrorist actions are done by muslims …. yeah why bother,
Amazing how you’re all about the power of predictions except in this case.
Your application of your “beliefs” seems quite dependent on their momentary political utility.
Good catch!
THANK YOU.
While it’s true that nobody would be surprised if al quaeda had been responsible for this, what’s remarkable is the desperate attempt to insist that it *could* have been muslims, even if this time it wasn’t.
It’s as though, you know, they just hate muslims and are morons.
…and on the flip side of late muslims haven’t been quite as good with their attacks. should have been a clue
Let us see how it all turns out. After all, when anyone does anything bad the immediate PC conclusion is that it must have been a white male that did it. Perhaps it was this time, and then again maybe not. Lets see what the evidence shows.
Why do Norwegians look like elves? Even the bad ones.
…BAD ELF …BAD
Innocent people have died in a horrible, tragic way…and all you guys can do is yak smuggly about mistranslation and your shock at the fact that the perpetrator isn’t Muslim. If this attack had happened on American soil and been carried out by Muslims, you’d be splattering your self-righteous grief all over the screen. Get a grip, folks – and show some respect.
At this point, we know nothing about the perpetrator, the motives, the religion or the politics of the person or persons responsible.
However, no matter what “inspired” this vile and despicable act, it does NOT erase, excuse, alibi, or create a “moral relativity” of the worldwide, repeated, ongoing, and monumentally wicked plots, schemes, and overt acts of vile and despicable terrorism, death, destruction and maiming of innocents by radical Islamists.
While “leaping to conclusions” is really simply connecting obvious dots for most likely suspects, radical Islamists may not ALWAYS be behind every vile and despicable act of mass murder in the world. There are other depraved individuals who on occasion commit one act…set against the backdrop of thousands by radical Islamists…that act being used as a “see, Christians are JUST AS VIOLENT” ridiculous comparison.
The argument simply gets more stupid and ignorant from there.
If this is a lone gunman, who has lost his mind and went on a rampage…it does not and will not evaporate a worldwide disease of radical Islamic terrorism. However, it WILL be used by the left to create some moral equivalence argument. That fact, takes a vile and despicable act and places a force multiplier on it…because that’s what leftists do. They swim in a vile and despicable cesspool. And enjoy it.
Here is one sensible statement:
Here is another:
Here is another:
Churches that openly engage with the community, no matter what their religion, are a valuable asset to any nation. Extremists who isolate themselves from the community, no matter what their faction, pose a threat to any nation … as we have seen in Norway.
hope your prayer rug doesn’t leave carpet burns on your knees
Very nicely put…
Extremists pose a threat. Well put. Does that include global warming alarmists, or do you grant yourself special status? After all, if you get your way, millions of people will lose their wealth, some will die. So do you apply your alleged high-brow standards to yourself? Otherwise, you’re no different than this Norwegian perp.
Something smells here.
To high heaven….I agree. I am holding off on any kind of judgement here. When the dust settles we will see I hope.
Breivik`s declared views: Christian,nationalist,pro-capitalist (businessman himself), free-mason,books reader( called Kafka`s Trial, Orwell`s 1984).
Looks as the megalo-man. The political climat of the country where the socialists in power are in the connection with the native Islamists can drive mad the young megalo-man. Though the police declared of his indefinite right-wing connections, it`s definite he is the independant figure. Its worth to notice that the murdered teenagers where socialist activists.
The ideology-first far-left and the ideology-first far-right are exactly alike in that *BOTH* embrace the rhetoric of revolution, rather than accepting the rights and the responsibilities that are associated to (1) the rule-of-law, and (2) the ballot-box.
The Norwegian nutjob took this far-***ie revolutionary rhetoric seriously. He insanely imagined himself in the place of Chuck Norris (see the graphic in the following story) … and then he made his murderous fantasies real.
Chuck Norris claims thousands of right wing cell groups exist
and will rebel against U.S. government

Jon Henrik Gilhuus is absolutely right about not trusting google translate. I have used translation software and it takes so long to correct the translation that it would have been faster to just translate it myself. The syntax of other languages is often much different than it is in English and as you can see makes the translated document awkward. It can even be offensive. For instance, say you want to translate an old text that uses ‘ass’ for donkey into Spanish. If you enter ‘ass’ Google gives a list of words but you won’t know which is correct. Translate ‘donkey’ by itself and Google does come up with the correct words ‘burro’ or ‘asno’ but can’t come up with either in a phrase. In a phrase, Google does not come up with the word for donkey but instead uses a word that crudely references a part of anatomy which in Spanish never means donkey so you can imagine how translating ‘ox and ass bowed down before him’ or ‘the farmer sold his cow and his ass’ will come across in Spanish.
Still, regardless of the Google errors in the above articles, newer information released overnight indicates that this very well may be the guy.
Utoya is a politically-oriented summer camp owned by the Worker’s Youth League (AUF in Norwegian). The AUF was formed in 1927 from the merger of the Left Communist Youth League and Socialist Youth League of Norway. Utoya is where the Prime Minister says he “became politically active.” So I’d say there’s definitely a connection there – one that would attract a right-wing extremist.
From his photos, he also looks like a narcissist. It’ll be interesting to see whether he’s got a manifesto or some other BS to justify his horrible actions. I’m also wondering whether these attacks were independent or carried out by an organization.
How can he “look like a narcissist”? He looks like a blond guy.
No diagnosing specific mental illnesses/aberrations from photos on the internet!
Though if you think he’s nuts, you’re probably right.
You’re right – sorry. I guess I was expecting pictures more like the early ones of Jared Loughner, kind of average-guyish. These photos look like Olan Mills took ‘em – he appears very stylish. Maybe they were just the first ones available to the news media. Either that or the Norwegians take very nice mug shots.
http://www.document.no has published all the comments Breivik posted on their website. Nothing remotely extremist or crazy there, in fact a majority of the norwegian people would agree with his comments! He was skeptical towards multiculturalism, he considered marxism, nazism and islam to be hateful ideologies, and he criticized that nazism and fascism are treated as inherently evil while marxism(communism) and islam are considered ‘good’. He writes that all hateful ideologies should be treated equal.
In 2010 his comments show more grandiose ideas of himself compared to the earlier comments. He claims he wants to help document.no to make their website bigger and better (which they declined because they did not found him entirely credible, not crazy, just a bit ‘too much’). He stopped commenting at document.no in October last year.
If his ideas are considered extreme right wing, then the majority of the Norwegian people are extreme right wing (a ludicrous idea). From what I’ve read I think that he gradually lost control of reality. It looks like he acted alone. A crazy gunman/bomber that wanted to set his world straight. Sad.
Mina, that is a fine post … here is a list of traits common to sociopaths. These traits are incompatible with respect for the ballot-box, and are incompatible with respect for rule-of-law, and are incompatible even with ordinary family life.
This is why violent sociopaths commonly are “loners” who are attracted to extremist factions, religions, and ideologies. Regrettably, popular culture is full of violent images and narratives that sociopaths disastrously mistake for reality … and yes, politicians sometimes do exploit these narratives.

“Utøy” actually does translate as “vermin”. “Utøya”, though, translates as “Out Island”.
And when a man in a police jacket has been reported shooting people on an island, and you find a person wearing a police jacket and a gun on said island, surrounded by eighty dead kids…
What do you do?
As for us, we shot him. Gently, as such things go.
