‘Income Inequality’ — The Biggest Lie of All

December 9th, 2013 - 9:44 pm

obama_income_inequality_12-9-13-4

In the last few days Barack Obama has attempted to change the subject of public discourse from healthcare to income inequality,  which he has dubbed “the defining challenge of our time.”

Now he tells us!

Since POTUS hasn’t paid much attention to this problem for the first five plus years of his administration, even with African-American unemployment through the roof and the middle class disappearing from American economic life,  and with Rand Paul (of all people) the only one to come up with a concrete suggestion of how to elevate people out of poverty, as he has recently with Detroit, this should come as some surprise.

But it doesn’t.  The fight for “income inequality” is and has been for a long time the defining lie of modern liberalism.

This is not to say that income inequality does not exist.  Of course, it does.  But what liberalism does is pretend to do something about it, to whine and complain about it, in order to ensure the support of the poor, the semi-poor and minority groups, while doing nothing that changes the substance of their inequality in any permanent way.  Indeed, it often exacerbates it.

Consciously or unconsciously, these liberals may actually want the lower classes to remain the lower classes.  After all, if they bettered themselves, they might leave the Democratic fold.  That wouldn’t do.  So the system goes on.

Meanwhile, for all their pious progressive talk, George Soros gets to keep his palazzo in Katonah (among many others),  Jeff Katzenberg his beach shack in Malibu, and Obama the beach shack that some say awaits him on Oahu.  And we all know about Al Gore’s many eco-friendly homes.  (Oops, I think that one’s now Tipper’s house.)

The sad truth is that in this country today, it is still possible for people to improve their employment situation, their income, and their happiness quotient by, GET THIS, working hard. Often working hard means working more, but it comes out the same. I have a disabled son (car accident when he was 19) and though he gets minimal disability from the government, he has qualified for little other help. Here's why: He is buying a house, he owns 2 cars, he has raised 2 girls , one in the Air Force in Germany and one at university on an athletic scholarship. If you want to own things like cars and homes, the government doesn't want to help you because you might not vote democrat any more. My son works at many small but difficult jobs to get the money to live at a higher level than the government wants him to live. He can't work long and he can only do certain kinds of work, but he FINDS that work and he does it, thus he disqualifies himself from most government programs.

Final exam for liberal arts graduation

What's the maximum permissible level of economic inequality in society, expressed as a ratio of the lowest income to the highest income?

Defend your choice. Explain how it applies to movie stars, sports figures, and other celebrities. Show all assumptions and steps in your calculations.

For extra credit, address these points: Does this target ratio ever change? How does society know when it's time to change it, and in which direction, and by how much? Be explicit.

Get-an-A-for-the-term question: How would society achieve and maintain your income ratio without causing civil insurrection? Be specific.

Fuzzy terms such as "fair share" and the like will not be accepted in any answer unless its meaning is exactly specified in numbers.

Socialism needs:
A) "victims" to save
B) " oppressors" to punish
C) a wheelbarrow to carry away all the stolen loot to divvy up between themselves and their cronies.

If you don' t have an "oppressor", just pick anyone and call him a racist. Or any successful free market business owner or executive. Or anyone who is financially sound.

If you don't have enough victims, you invent them. Gender, sexual preference, class, race, ethnicity...and sometimes age...although not often.

The game is played thusly...you give the "victims" cheap trinkets and junk in order to buy their votes. This usually costs 5% of the amount you steal, the other 95% goes to you and your cronies for "building and administering" the "free lunch".

"Income inequality" is a ruse using "class" as the setup. It attacks capitalism the way phony socialism always attacks the free market. Successful people means anyone who makes an amount on the "other side" of an imaginary line, that once crossed makes you a "have"...who "unfairly" makes "too much". So, in order to "redistribute" to those "have nots", The State must step in and put 2747583 Government Workers on the dole to "implement" the program to "take care" of the "oppressed".

The Workers Party then takes "dues" as "tribute" to The Party from the Union members.

"Income inequality" therefore keeps the permanent underclass it needs, feeds the Workers Party with phony jobs, that squeezes dues into their own pockets and kicks another brick out of the foundation of the free market. It's Carlo Ponzi dressed as Robin Hood. "Income" isn't made more equal...at least not earned income. Then again, that was never the goal in the first place.

The largest most recent study points to location and family structure. These are the prime influences on upward mobility. The US has a much higher percentage of broken families than do other developed nations.

People who complain about "inequality" never mention how much Oprah or Mick Jagger have earned or how little their stage help is paid. Nor do will they mention that Robinson Cano just signed a contract worth $240 million. So who exactly are they complaining about? Times up: they only complain about business leaders who earn a lot of money. Now why would that be?

I could take a different tack: the fact that people like J.K. Rowling can earn so much indicates how powerful and valuable a good idea can be in the free marketplace. Never in human history has any private citizen been able to do what Rowling has done, or Bill Gates or a host of other people. And it may be that Rowling's first draft of her first book was not even typed on a computer. Nothing stops anyone from developing a good story for publication, nor someone from writing good software.

And when they do, they earn every penny and they don't make anyone poor by becoming wealthy.

"Income inequality" joins Peak Oil and Global Warming as frauds of the left that are really aimed at advancing ideological agendas rather than advancing prosperity and liberty.

The answer to 'inequality' is not thinly veiled coveting of the wealth of prosperous people, but to encourage every person to rise to their highest potential as a human. Above all, we must never confuse our worth as human beings with money, which is the mistake made by many.

And let's not forget that the inequality tops out in the D.C. area, where lobbyists and cronies meet to divvy up the spoils.

Income inequality can be measured in different ways, but generally speaking it describes how wealth is shared in a population. In countries we would identify as "free" the wealth gap is low, and it increases as a general rule as nations become "unfree."

The gini coefficient is a common measure used to quantify this idea, and the United States actually scores pretty badly. It actually resembles nations in South America more than those in Europe.

Many economists point to supply-side economics, our crumbling infrastructure, and our withering social safety nets as causes of our inequality and sinking standing in the world.

How do any of the things you mention cause income inequality? Who are these economists? I would argue that the main cause of income inequality is our out of control regulatory state that prevents people from climbing the economic ladder.

I can't throw a baseball 100 miles per hour and hit a target the size of a grapefruit at 50 paces.

But there are guys who can and make $100 million.

Liberals say this is not fair - the baseball player must forfeit most of his money to a bum puking his guts out in the gutter.

Sounds stupid doesn't it.

Income equality is a Liberal stupid idea that makes no sense at all....
