Semper Fi, General Mattis

March 24th, 2013 - 12:00 am

General James Mattis has left Central Command, as of Friday, and it’s just as well, since he is entirely the wrong man to preside over our retreat from Afghanistan, and in all likelihood from the broader region.  Mattis, the most beloved Marine officer of this generation, is an attack dog, our Patton (like Patton, he is a very cultured man who composes poetry in Greek, and his famously sulfuric language may well be, as it was in Patton’s case, a conceit used to bond with his fighters rather than a reflection of his true rhetorical preference).

Barbara Ledeen once sat next to him at dinner and pronounced him one of the most interesting men she had ever met.  Which is quite a compliment.

Among my collection of secret documents is a poster design–not even the Marine Corps could actually put it out–featuring a quotation from General Mattis to “Iraqi sheikhs.”  It begins “I come in peace, I did not bring artillery,” and it ends “you F**ck with me, I’ll kill you all.”

No wonder he was the Marines’ most beloved leader.  No wonder the best recent portrait of him is whimsical and Hollywoodian.  It’s hard to “explain” him to an American public that doesn’t know much of anything about the military, or about warfare:

Coincidentally, Mattis’ retirement comes at the same time as our younger son’s departure from the Marine Corps after four years, including a deployment to Helmand Province in Afghanistan.  His older brother, also a Marine officer, was twice in Iraq, including a stint in Anbar Province during some very dark days.  And their older sister was twice in Iraq and twice in Afghanistan, most recently on General McChrystal’s excellent staff in Kabul.

The great mistake the US has made in the war against islam is not to be serious about it.

Turn the Devil Dogs lose and get it over with. The "Angels of Death" will finish it, once and for all.

...or quit playing at war and bring them all home.

The Ledeen family has done more than their share. Wow. The Marines intercepted a Taliban communcation several years back when my friend's son was in Afghanistan. This is the Taliban commander after losing Karamanda to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines: It went something like...

"The British were chickens, but these new men... these American Marines... they fight like animals, like they are not even human."

This is what America (and the world) gets when most of the men/women with real power in Legislature, Judiciary and Executive AND among the bien pensant "ellite" have no military experience.

Moreover disdain such service and those who do so serve as infra dig. Are encouraged in their disdain by educators and fashionable pundits and celebrities who also in the main have no military experience except in film where the action is scripted and nobody's really shooting back.

AND as a "high moral good" disallow even the presence on"elite" university campuses of facilities for students who MIGHT have interest in the military as subject matter or personal experience such as ROTC.

Have a look as reminder at the last two "Democratic" Administration Commanders - in - Chief, elected to the position by citizens
bull-horned by media, propaganda, universities, educators and even Sesame Street and lots and lots of glamourous celebrities :
1. WJ Clinton, who during the Vietnam War took the "affirmative action" exemption from the military draft for college students. Different from - how and why - non-college student "commoners" required in law to answer the "call-up" else ending in prison. How's that for all citizens are "equal before the Law"? . Cliinton hieing to England which assured he could not be inadvertently "caught" in that draft and
2. BH Obama whose provenance and thus military experience is to fact essentially unknown by citizens. Although there is in the public domain some information that Obama's Selective Service Registration is inauthentic For Obama citizens have the "metaphor", the "narrative" put forward by his biographers, public relations staff, political allies, supporters and enablers.

And must trust that the DNC acted ethically/lawfully in selecting BH Obama as their candidate for POTUS. Remembering Nancy Pelosi had after the loss of the presidential election at the Millenium - important date for Change in the Western calendar - in her public rage vowed revenge against those Americans who Hillary Clinton described as "that vast right wing conspiracy". Their words, not mine.

I had my photo taken with General Mattis at the recent Iwo Jima Alimni Association luncheon. He's a great speaker and a hell of a man. I can't imagine anyone who could listen to him and not decide to follow him to the very gates of hell.

Gosh, I'd love to have a copy of that poster. I can just imagine the look on the sheikhs' faces when he said that.

And congratulations on the return of your children, Michael. Unlike our president, they've served their country well and with honor. :)

LOL. He also told his officers whenever they meet with the locals and mullahs to "Be polite, be courteous, but have a plan to kill everyone in the room."

A great one whom was described to me as always a work in progress and as stated, he was every Marines brother first and foremost!

Wish he would stay around and active to help fight the battle to get the USMC back to its original mission.

Semper Fi!

Michael -- Best wishes for your sons departure and future endeavors!

....the US as done that more than a few times in its history and then we've needed a military full of Pattons to get out of trouble again.

Quite the contrary. We have had the PC types, LBJ and his ilk, get us in the trouble and the Pattons conduct punitive war to get us out of the trouble. The message when done to our enemies is "don't make me come back and do this again."

It is the multi-culti nonsense from the Marxists that teach that all cultures are equal that gets us in trouble. This disease let's those like GWB think that we can make savages into civilized men. We cannot. Their cultures are dysfunctional miasmas of bad and broken ideas that cannot be reformed only changed out for something better or dealt a fatal blow.

That quote means he is exactly the kind of officer who should dominate the ranks of the US military. Instead of crippling rules of engagement, PC nonsense and divisions worth of lawyers sticking their ruinous noses into every little detail, the military should be focused on, as Limbaugh once said, "killing our enemies and breaking their stuff." If we aren't will do to exactly that, keep the troops home or disband the military altogether. Of course, the US as done that more than a few times in its history and then we've needed a military full of Pattons to get out of trouble again.

"Soldiers’ parents are gripped by two intense emotions: great pride, and terrible anxiety" I agree.

A little over a year ago my Army Infantry son made the decision to leave the Infantry he so dearly loved due to what Army leadership was doing to it. I was happy that he would no longer be in harm's way. I was sad because he is exactly the kind of person a right-thinking country needs in its warrior class.

Greetings:

Iraq and Afghanistan may be the battlefields, but Islam is the millstone. If your plan doesn't include constraining, undermining, or eradicating Islam, you don't have a plan. What you have is a hope.
