CoulterKrauthammer2

PJ Lifestyle editor Dave Swindle: “I finished Krauthammer’s column collection this morning and it reinforced my view of him as the most overrated of conservative columnists. The differences between his tradition of Fox News corporatist conservatism and Coulter’s crusading activist conservatism are much clearer. In a future piece I’ll explain the specific differences but first I’m curious for the views of PJM’s readers.”

Krauthammer is smart, but he sometimes has those East Coast and Neocon blinders on. Both of those tendencies, along with the "GOP strategists" and Country Club boys and girls, have had devastating impacts on conservatism.

I prefer Coulter. She's not always right, but who is? Coulter, like many of us, had high hopes for Christie when he took on the teachers' unions. He turned out to be a dud, but so has almost every other big GOP name lately. What I especially like about Coulter is that she's smart AND courageous. Too many pundits cave in regularly to PC, and I haven't seen her do that. Many who are still big names such as Laura Ingraham often cave on issues such as "Is Obama Socialist?" We won't get very far with that wimpy attitude.

I do agree with Bill Lawrence that "there is room for both." And I wish we had more pundits with minds of their own. Now, we have a sometimes stifling sort of PC of the Right in addition to PC of the Left. The PC of the Right says that Thou Shalt Not Ever Criticize the military, "free trade," Israel and some other sacred cows. Pat Buchanan might have discredited himself in some ways, but he's been right about a lot of things which GOP bigshots scoff at.

Here's a view: Krauthammer is intelligent, comprehensive, and serious. Colter is a comedienne.

She is a great comedienne, right up there with the best, but she is a comedienne. Sort of like the Bill Maher of the Right, except that she relies on actual substance rather than Mr. Maher's eyerolls and obscenity.

For what she does, Ms Colter is better than Maher and Krauthammer. For what he does, Krauthammer is pretty darn good.

Have you read any of her books, particularly the one photographed above?

Al,
Agree fully. Coulter and Krauthammer are doing different jobs for different audience interests (the audiences may overlap significantly, but are looking for different things). Both have significant impact and both are important to conservative causes. We don't have to choose between them, so let's not.

But they're not saying the same thing. They do not agree about the nature of the threats facing America or the proper tactics in how to defeat them.

Have you read both of these books? It's not that one is a bunch of mean jokes marketed to conservative true believers and the other is sophisticated essays for smart people.
