"It's a hell of a thing, killin' a man. Take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have." ~ William Munney, Unforgiven.

Really. They simply could not imagine why anyone, especially those stubborn Jews, would not immediately recognize the clear superiority of Greek culture and adopt it wholesale...

Human sacrifice is evil because it's killing a human being for no good reason.

Philosophers make a big deal out of Dionysian vs. Apollonian stuff. But I think human sacrifice can happen in either mode. The Dionysian is obvious - people get drunk, horny, believe in evil spirits and elder gods, go all Lord of the Flies and start killing each other for fun. Headhunters and serial killers are Dionysian.

But Apollonians like to think about killing each other before they actually do it. They need to develop a theory to tell them why killing each other is necessary. Maybe crunch a few numbers. Come up with a five-year plan for genocide. Eugenics is an Apollonian form of human sacrifice: the weak and imperfect must be sacrificed "for the common good."

If I understand ancient Greece correctly, most of the people were closer to Dionysus than Apollo. Post-Enlightenment thinkers didn't like that, so they ignored the "cthonic" aspects of Greek culture and concentrated on the "civilized," Apollonian bits - all those bearded and berobed gentlemen pacing seriously amid the columns, thinking elevated thoughts. Meanwhile, their neighbors were busy sacrificing goats.

If there is no G-d, and man is just another creature on this planet, then there is no evil in murdering the innocent. As it is only what feels good, or what one wishes to do is right for them. It is called New Age.

For those who believe in a G-d than died for human sin, then murdering humans whom G-d made, and loved is wrong. I suppose, it could be written murder in cold blood is evil. That which hates humans would want humans to murder, and have murder in their hearts.

What happens to humans that murder? Why has G-d stated thou shall not murder? If G-d is real, does it know that which is murdered is not just the creature that is harmed? Many turn away from G-d when they are filled with guilt.
