CNN Contributor Victim of ‘SWATting’ Incident
After last week, I don’t think I need to explain to regular readers of the Blogosphere what “SWATting” means, but just in case, here’s Erick Erickson of Red State.org on Friday:
Ever hear of swatting? It’s a tactic used by left-wing activists and others these days to spoof phone calls in order to get SWAT Teams to show up at houses. It has happened to several conservative activists.
Consider this your must read of the day. It is LA County Prosecutor John Patrick Frey, who blogs as Patterico, describing just what harassment he and his family were subjected to by the online left.
The mainstream media, which has greater sympathies with the left than the right, would prefer not to cover stories like this. But it is getting to the point where they ignore the ongoing, sustained harassment of conservatives because they are conservatives.
And here’s Erickson early this morning — after he got SWAT-ted himself on Sunday evening:
Sunday night as my family and sister’s family were around the dinner table and playing outside, sheriff’s deputies pulled into my driveway responding to an accidental shooting at my home.
One deputy was in the driveway. Another blocked the end of the driveway with his car. A neighbor tells me another was up the hill from the house.
There was no shooting at my home. Someone called 911, claimed to be at my home, and claimed to witness a shooting at my home.
As the one deputy and I spoke, the other deputy walked up the driveway, positioned himself behind the car in the driveway, and kept his eyes on me and his hand on his gun. My three year old ran between us all thinking it was so cool to have a police car in the driveway with its blue lights flashing.
Luckily, after I had starting writing about Kimberlin, I advised the Sheriff’s Department to be aware this could happen.
It was a prank, but not just any prank. This is a prank left-wing activists are increasingly deploying against those who dissent from their political views. When Barack Obama told his supporters in 2008 to bring guns to knife fights, some of his supporters took him more literally than I assume he intended.
The stories of what is happening are not getting much traction outside of right-of-center blogs and the occasional opinion column at the Wall Street Journal, D.C. Examiner, and Washington Times.
Will it get any attention at CNN, where Erickson is paid to contribute, both on the air and to their Website? For half a century, the media narrative is that all violence and threats of violence happen on the right, while the left are all United Colors of Benetton wearing happy shiny flower children with peaceful easy feelings. That narrative is why over the last three years, CNN first melted down over the Tea Party, and then blamed Sarah Palin for Gabrielle Giffords’ shooting. In contrast last fall, first CNN, and then Time magazine, which is owned by the same conglomerate that owns CNN, would quickly go all-in praising Occupy Wall Street (where the recurring theme is the “mostly peaceful” OWS) — violence and the threat of violence are tools of the right in their minds, as Jesse Walker of Reason thoroughly explored in 2009.
So how does CNN begin to cover a story that doesn’t fit anywhere within the narrative they’ve worked so hard to construct? As blogger Ace of Spades wrote yesterday:
Even though Erick Erickson is a CNN contributor, I think there’s a good chance they won’t cover the story. If they do, you can bet your bottom dollar it will be a “balanced” piece including lots of supposed harassments of liberals.
They’ll reach back ten years for “balance.”
There are only two media storylines: Conservatives are doing bad things, and “a broken system permits both sides to do bad things.”
There is never the third type of story: Leftists are doing bad things.
That is, if CNN covers the story at all. So far it seems to be nothing but crickets; if you hear otherwise, let me know in the comments below.

Update (5/30/12): Welcome Instapundit readers — if you want to know why CNN is getting clobbered in the ratings, here’s one very good example — they’re being scooped by Fox over news involving a paid CNN contributor.
More: Clearly, there is only one veteran newsman who’s both Old and New Media savvy who can turn CNN around — and who just might be full tilt double-live gonzo enough to take on the job — if he can still be found…

I am totally befuddled by the MSM refusal to present the daily horrors perpetrated by the Moslems all over the world. I get a more balance reporting from Al Jazera where they aren’t afraid to present the atrocities. Seeing what is going on world wide is numbing. All we get on our world news reports are photo ops of Obama and feel good news bits. When will we get the truth?
Supplement alJazeera:
……suggest you check out Robert Spencer’s “Jihad Watch”……..there you’ll read perfidious Islam/Muslim items in all of their ugly, alarming literalness….. shows up the gross omissions of our ‘main’ media for the partisan manipulators they really are. There’s lots and lots of Islamic-inspired tragedy out there.
Spencer’s frequent phrase is, “Mis-understanders of Islam”……[then, story follows].
As a Marylander, I’m concerned by the Islamic infiltration and penetration of Northern Virginia…that area is “Virginia” in place-name only.
Well, as a Virginian, your whole state scares the snot out of me.
The islamic invasion is not as bad as you think. However (and it’s a big one), Fairfax County is home to that lousy islamic school that has bred every single one of the last 100 would-be terrorists. The people STRONGLY want the school gone and the county refuses. I suspect big money is involved but don’t have a solution.
You will get the “truth” 25 minutes after Romney takes the oath as President.
“…the media narrative is that all violence and threats of violence happen on the right, while the left are all United Colors of Benetton wearing happy shiny flower children with peaceful easy feelings.”
I don’t think that’s really accurate.. To the Left, such violence is tolerable, and even admirable, as long as it’s directed against their enemies. How can wreaking havoc on one’s enemies be a bad thing? The Left is determined to destroy the Right, while the Right has been determined to accommodate and compromise with the Left. The Left counts on this “compromise” z- and finds it in world class morons like Alan Simpson or John McCain to accomplish this goal.
Haven’t we all learned by now that the left can do no wrong no matter how wrong it is? They have all become versions of Walter Duranty.
And besides complain, what has the right done to counter the left, ever???
When will we finally stop playing with America’s future and begin to fight back both figuritively and literally. If we don’t take the war to them, they will win and America loses.
Swatting, if proven false, should result in the person making the call being arrested, fined the costs of the swat intervention, and maybe even spend a few days in jail.
Seems that recently a judge put an honor student in jail for one night, because she was missing class to take care of her sisters, so it would be simple to put these pieces of human debris in jail for far longer.
We should give the government more authority to invade our lives and privacy. Because, you know, the party in power will never abuse it. Patriot Act and TSA 2.0!
Fail. Pointing to bad behavior to justify more bad behavior is a non sequitur.
Most people didn’t support the patriot act, the tsa or the creation of dhs.
Epic fail for missing completely obvious sarcasm.
It’s no easy matter to track SWATter if he is careful. He will spoof the number on a throwaway phone, and virtually all e-911 systems will read it as the spoofed number and address. He buys the phone for cash from some local outfit with no or limited security camera coverage, and wears a subtle disguise – a hat, cap, glasses, hoodie – to limit any exposure. That leaves “voice analysis,” which doesn’t meet most states’ standards of evidence, or the federal rules of evidence. It’s closer to polygraphing than to fingerprinting or DNA evidence. Hard to prove.
The lack of coverage is just because he targets conservatives and supports leftists. They can’t have anything else mess up the managed messaging for the election.
It is my personal view that if at same point you are not willing to stand up and say “no more”, and then be willing to back it up with acts–hard acts, impolite acts, divisive acts, acts that say “this breaks all bargains”– when the inevitable blowing off occurs, then you need to resolve yourself to defeat and rule by the double standards of the left, for they certainly intend to so do, by all apparent indications.
In other words, the loss of the ideals of classic liberalism is not inevitable, but right now Leviathan has check and mate in ten.
People need to understand that the GOP is not the answer, at least not on the national level, and they need to start thinking of how to win the fight they have, not the fight they want. I’m not saying that the GOP is going to get replaced–just that it basically seems irrelevant and unwilling to fight where the fight needs to be fought (and in fact may not be the best vehicle for doing so); and above all will do nothing besides one of two things–either stand on the sidelines and then take credit once victory is near, or will stab in the back with some form of “compromise”, because it cares more for easy electoral wins than hard ones.
Thus, to be clear–I’d like Mitt Romney to win. After he does, I expect nothing further positive from him, and perhaps much negative.
This reminds of the DMCA attacks that dominate some ecommerce industries. The DMCA allows anyone who lawfully fills it out to remove your web pages from search engines as well as your Internet host. You use the same techniques as SWATing – throwaway phone, disguise (if you’re smart) when you FAX from Kinkos etc… Basically, you can’t compete unless you’re willing to file a false (and illegal) DMCA.
If you can’t fight back in kind – then you can’t sell your products.
If it really is anything like as bad as claimed then heaven help us!
Please. Right wingers bomb abortion clinics and beat gays to death for being gay and have for years. This doesn’t even compare. Besides, I’d bet these guys faked it so they can claim themselves as victims. Their phones were “spoofed.” That’s a good one.
Tu quoque much?
Please. Left wingers bomb shit (you know, like Brett Kimberlin did) and beat up conservatives for being different and have for years. This is right along with that. I’d bet he would’ve been hoping Erickson had been shot.
Good god, Brian, are you really so deluded that you think the right wing is even close to as violent in scale as the left wing?
Seriously?
Consider a hypothetical situation where a person K shoots in the general direction of a person P without aiming. Even if K claims that his intent was to intimidate rather than kill – he most definitely knew that a death may result from his action and he decided that it is an acceptable possibility. So, he should be prosecuted for an attempted murder.
Same applies to SWATting. Whoever does it should be prosecuted for an attempted murder.
boris: The issue with that is that such a case would establish in legal precedent the premise and admission that SWAT teams are extremely dangerous to innocents. The drug warriors won’t have any of that.
I’m waiting for some idiot to “Swat” a black conservative. I’m surprised they haven’t done it already because it’s a twofer. They might get a black conservative removed from among the living. And of course it adds to the “police violence against blacks” narrative.
It’s not that new. A GWB 2004 inaugural celebration in my home town was swatted by a fake bomb threat. NO local media coverage.
The news, heck the entire gov’t and it’s allies, is what they decide they want you to know, and how to spin it. It is now controlled from the top, and well coordinated. Just a tiny tip of recent examples:
