Obama’s Inaugural Speech Presents His New Strategy and Blueprint for Transforming America
President Barack Obama’s inaugural speech is fascinating, as it presents his strategies, tactics, and new political line. Let’s look at it closely.
Obama begins with a very clever bit of hypocrisy:
We recall that what binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names. What makes us exceptional — what makes us American — is our allegiance to an idea, articulated in a declaration made more than two centuries ago: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.
So here is Obama saying that the essential basis of American democracy is the Constitution, American exceptionalism, and the Declaration of Independence’s claim of unalienable rights granted to the citizen.
Yet he is on record repeatedly rejecting each of these three ideas.
According to him, the Constitution is flawed for providing only “native liberties” and there is no such thing as American exceptionalism. Also, on several occasions he couldn’t even get the quotation from the Declaration right.
Now he is smarter. He doesn’t say these things are outdated or wrong, but rather that he is going to implement them properly. This is a bold act of misdirection to soothe criticism and to place on himself the mantle of America’s founding documents, pulling the rug from under his critics and appropriating for himself their arguments and symbols.
Next, Obama presents a new worldview intended to justify what he wants: statism, an imperial presidency, social and economic hegemony for the federal government (and within it, the executive branch), more regulation, and more spending.
How does he make this leap? By making it sound like a walk “to bridge the meaning of those words with the realities of our time.” In other words, to implement what Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin now, in 2013, requires doing the exact opposite of what everyone has always thought Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin wanted.
Obama explains:
– Rights may be “self-evident, they have never been self-executing.” So who is the guarantor that the people will get those rights? Answer: the federal government.
– America can only succeed if there is a national infrastructure. And as we know from his previous speeches (you didn’t build that!), only the government can build or back the “railroads and highways to speed travel and commerce; schools and colleges to train our workers.”
– “A free market only thrives when there are rules to ensure competition and fair play.” Yes, but it has always thrived under fewer rules than Obama wants, while it has plummeted with the level of rules and definition of fair play Obama has imposed on it.
– We are skeptical of central authority and know government can’t do everything, so for Americans, “celebration of initiative and enterprise; our insistence on hard work and personal responsibility, are constants in our character.”
Up to this point, Obama wants to sound as if he’s largely reading Mitt Romney’s inaugural address. Then there comes a very big “but.”
Times have changed, and “so must we; that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges; that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action.” In other words, to protect the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and individual rights, we need a bigger government, more taxes, more spending, and more regulation.
Neat, huh?
Yes, just as the Minutemen of the American Revolution and the soldiers who fought fascism and communism needed all these things, Obama continues (wrapping himself in the flag), so does modern America to fight … well, what exactly? Presumably they are the forces of racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and the greedy one percent.
Obama wisely does not specify the targets. That will come later.
While the speech may seem soporific to some and routine to others, it sets out an entirely new road for the United States. Its directions can be described as: turn left, and keep going.
Consider this passage:
No single person can train all the math and science teachers we’ll need to equip our children for the future, or build the roads and networks and research labs that will bring new jobs and businesses to our shores. Now, more than ever, we must do these things together, as one nation, and one people.
Really? And how does that follow? It isn’t as if someone says: “Hi, I’m Bob and I’m going to train all the math and science teachers we’ll need and build the roads and research labs.” There are, after all, other alternatives.






By the way Prof Rubin, yes everyone noticed. Some liked it and others were horrified. This is also not a new fight. Since the founding of our republic there has been a fight between federalism and individualism.The arguments between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams come to mind. Remember Jefferson wrote the Va Bill of Rights which became the US Bill of Rights, but he helped author the French Rights of Man. European socialism and viewpoints are not new in the US. Neither is the concept of an imperial presidency which was the brainchild of Alexander Hamilton (Federalist Papers) At times federalism has won and at times individualism (small government). Name calling, insults and disingenuousness is also not new.
Obama is neither the beginning of our nation (no matter what his acolytes would have you believe) nor will he be the end of our nation (no matter what conservatives would have you believe). We have been through alot worse over the centuries and so have our friends. But one thing we have learned through the years is that the only one you can truly count on is yourself no matter who is in power. (Government no matter the party in power is venal and only truly interested in maintaining itself.) Stop thinking somehow that without political diligent hardwork you will live in a utopia filled with unicorns and rainbows. Stand up for what you believe in. Just stop whining already.

To be sure, it was Madison that assembled and clarified what would be included in the U.S. Bill of Rights, not Jefferson! Moreover, it was the thoughts and the writings of Madison and Mason that Jefferson took his inspiration in the Declaration of Independence! Go read both documents and get a heaping dose of reality. After all, Madison is the father of the Constitution, right? Yes. Lastly, it was the thoughts and mindset of George Wythe, Jeffersons mentor and great American patriot, that Mr. Jefferson took his ideas.

I think that no matter what the media says, there are more of us then they are of them. In his WBEZ interview, Obama talked about “negative liberties” (what the government cant’t do) and not “native liberties” as the article says:
If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it I’d be OK .
But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it’s been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can’t do to you. Says what the federal government can’t do to you, but doesn’t say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf.
And that hasn’t shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. Anyone with more than two functioning brain cells should have seen this coming when obama was campaigning for the 2008 election. Remember : “I want to fundamentally transform this country.”? That statement told me everything I needed to know about obama…and I haven’t been wrong about him yet.
For me it was when he said that people can’t put their thermostats at 72 degrees in the winter or summer and eat whatever they wanted and expect the rest of the world to be ok with that.
My reaction was: what does the world have to say about anything we do in our country? It was our technology and our infrastructure – we built it all. And it’s not like we didn’t share it. Every country on the planet SHOULD be like us – if it weren’t for THEM! It’s THEIR fault – not ours – that they’re not!
Now we have a guy that wants to body slam us into poverty and is proud of it. Who wants to be THAT guy? He’s proudly trying to become the next Nero.
From everything that Obama and his wife have done it is evident that they hate our country. They love to live like a king and queen on taxpayers money, in fact they spend more money tha Queen Elizabeth. She spends about 58 million a year on the royal family staff, servants, travel, food, cooks, etc., while King Barryo and Michelle spend 1.3 billion a of taxpayer funds on vacations, staff, czars, food and upkeep at the WH. It costs air force I $180,000 a hour for gas and that seems to be Obamas home. He stays on it. We now have two of the most repugnent people in our great nations history in the WH.
Obama’s speech is quite consistent with his education initiatives determination to implement Amitai Etzioni’s Communitarian approaches to society in the place of our historic emphasis on the Individual. It is lurking in the unread definitions of what College and Career Ready actually mean. Plus we already have Professor john a powell who headlined at the White House at Building One America insisting we must destroy the whole concept of the unitary self.
His definition of freedom reminded me of John Dewey’s:
“Freedom is a social benefit conferred by the collective intelligence of society.”
I guess society’s elected representative upon being sworn in without a need to face voters again says he is taking it back. For the greater good.
But wait, O’Dismal, isn’t Detroit, Oakland, Newark, Philly, S. side of Chicago, interior of Kalifornia, and most big cities already approaching nirvana? I mean they have their welfare, food stamps, housing, heating subsidies, gov’ment schools, and cell phones. What more could they want. Chicago even has your gun ban? Isn’t it perfect yet? Seems to me that, had the GOP and its far right extremists had a legitimate platform of resolves for the problems of the nation that, were seen as genuine by a majority of the voters, such discussions as this, wouldn’t be on the forefront. If anyone was paying attention, I am sure they wonder when gun control, climate change, and immigration reform become so much more important than jobs, which once in a awhile WAS a campaign issue.

In places like Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Iowa, there was a lot of talk about “vulture capitalist” Mitt Romney breezing into town so that he could close down steel mills, manufacturing plants and the like. And there was talk of keeping jobs in America, rather than letting Mitt Romney outsource all the jobs in Ohio and Wisconsin to China.
There was even a slogan about how the President kept this country from plunging into the worst depression of all time by saving auto jobs in Michigan and Ohio — it went something like, “Bin Laden is dead and Detroit is still alive!!!”
But that was a long time ago, and the only things that matter now are amnesty, guns and gay marriage.

Small quibble. Exactly how can the ACA be called a “(failed) national insurance scheme” when it doesn’t go into effect until next year? I’m not a big fan of the ACA, mind you—a single-payer insurance program would be much cheaper—but its hard to believe that any system could be worse than the current mess. The U.S. has the worst health care system of any industrialize nation. We pay vastly more, and we don’t comparable results.
Meanwhile, the world is getting warmer. Deal with it. Neither your ideology or mine has anything to do with it.

Obama is (IMO) an innumerate — math, numbers, simple arithmetic — appear to be beyond his comprehension. He seems incapable of understanding what piling up trillions upon trillions of dollars in debt will mean for the United States. Thoroughly oblivious or willfully indifferent or is it deliberate? not that this doesn’t have an “up” side — hopefully bankruptcy will curb his more destructive impulses. But there was another aspect of his speech which bothered me — it is his Manichean splits — his demonizing some, while painting himself as angelic. (I will not say where I have heard this before). If Obama would spend a fraction of his energy expressing his disdain for America’s real enemies (say, for the militant Islamists overseas murdering our troops) as opposed to demonizing fellow Americans for a difference in a political opinion, I would, perhaps detest him a bit less. Unfortunately, he not only despises Americans of the “wrong” opinions, he actively arms and embraces America’s enemies (such as the Muslim Brotherhood). He’s like the inverse of a Joe McCarthy (wonder if next, he’ll set up committees to ferret out and imprison American patriots?)

Rubin’s analysis is excellent, i.e., as far as it goes–and that is not far enough. Obama has ended the separation between Church and State, transforming it into an Obamaian religion of the “collective” incarnated in the fed. gov. that will see to the rewarding of every single person’s efforts. “Newsweek” caught the meaning of Obama with the title page promulgating Obama as “The Second Coming”. What the forefathers (and mothers) formed (= “The First Coming”), associated with the symbolism of Christian messianism, is being “fundamentally transformed” into the realization of the suppossedly “true” (alas, only implicitly realized in its fullness until Obama was begat) meaning of the American “experiment” as seen in the Declaration and interpreted by Obama. Note that Obama has fused liberty, equality and inalienable rights into the current form of governmental “rewarding” of each single American, i.e., a material equality. The realizer is the collective, viz., the fed. gov. under Obama’s rule (= “The Second Coming”). Here is where religion and state are fused. It is a this-wordly “relgion”, but one that taps into religious emotionality and hitches it up to a politicial ideal. Once upon a time Obama claimed that the individual is not saved unless the collectivity is saved. I will predict that such a collectivity-fusion will turn against its heretics. What am I saying? Already, religious groupings such as the Catholic Church or Evangelicals or, I think, Orthodox Jews, are being forced at the point of a gun (which is the power of the state’s realization of ideals, laws, etc.) to act re contraception or abortion against the group’s fundamental moral beliefs. Obama must particularly break the Catholic Church (the most powerful non-gov. religion whereby civil society shares its “rewarding”, viz., help for the unfortunate). This is being done by forcing the Catholic Church to surrender to Obama’s rules or retire from public life.
Some Evangelicals say that each of use will meet his “Maker”, viz., God. Obama wants to ReMake the fed. gov. The act of “MAKING” anew is indeed a Second Coming. This is not an act of “reforming”, but of a new re-creating (= re-making) of the government. One cannot REmake anything without first UNmaking it. The constitutional nature of the fed. gov. was one which was aimed at limitation of a centralized government. Any “Re-Making”, if the term is to retain its semanticity, means that the fundamental function of governments in the USA must be first UN-Made in order to experience fundamental transformation. Obama is effectively creating a new Constitution! This is literally a confession of betrayal. Obama swore to uphold the Constitution, not to re-make it. We will soon have a king again or a Caesar or a new institution called “the Obama”, a semi-divine term that will ring down the ages as the family name of Julius Caesar did.
Enough said! A comment does not allow for adequate articulation. I will tentatively suggest that the apparent positive attitude towards Islam shown by Obama finds it origins in a kindered belief insofar as Islam does not separate religion for social organization. At the moment, my thesis is but a suggestion.

He misdirected with topics that would not call attention to his last term and lack of success on everything.
