Help Is on the Way! Maybe! Someday!

UKRAINE

As we approach the one-year anniversary of Russia’s seizure of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine, Professor Ditherton Wiggleroom is thinking about getting serious about giving some consideration about “edging” closer to perhaps sending actual weapons to Ukraine:

With Russian-backed separatists pressing their attacks in Ukraine, NATO’s military commander, Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, now supports providing defensive weapons and equipment to Kiev’s beleaguered forces, and an array of administration and military officials appear to be edging toward that position, American officials said Sunday.

President Obama has made no decisions on providing such lethal assistance. But after a series of striking reversals that Ukraine’s forces have suffered in recent weeks, the Obama administration is taking a fresh look at the question of military aid.

My read on this is that perhaps by spring, maybe not until summer, we’ll send some weapons — likely nothing heavier than assault rifles and shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles — to a Ukrainian Army which has been unable to put up a stand since last fall.

It would be better to wash our hands of this mess than to continue pissing away our credibility with quarter measures like these.
