Aided and abetted by the presence of social media, things are getting a little hot in the American political kitchen these days. From Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s vulgarity, to the unmitigated anti-Semitism of Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and President Trump’s occasionally indelicate (but welcomed by many of us) handling of it all, everyone could use a little Xanax.

Maybe a shot of whiskey. Whatever works best.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) urged everyone to take things down a notch.

Quoting the late Antonin Scalia on attacking ideas rather than people, McConnell said that “all of us have a responsibility to elevate the public discourse.” He also acknowledged that “politics is a contact sport,” however.

These days it’s more of a rules-free cage match, and while it’s occasionally fun to watch, Cocaine Mitch probably does have a point here.

Will anyone listen? Don’t put any money on that.
