In 1999, Donald Trump went on Meet the Press and discussed the already growing threat that North Korea posed. He outlined a negotiation-first strategy, saying, “First, I’d negotiate. I would negotiate like crazy.” And only if that failed would he use a military attack. In light of his Game of Thrones-esque comments yesterday about using “fire and fury,” does this mean President Trump feels like negotiations and diplomacy have failed? With only a third of the people polled saying they trust the president to handle this North Korean crisis, should he take a step back and listen to his own message from 1999?
