Human Rights Activist: Fusion GPS Sells Itself to the Highest Bidder to Conduct Smear Campaigns

Thor Halvorssen, president of Human Rights Foundation, on Wednesday alleged that Fusion GPS, the firm behind the discredited Trump dossier, is a group of highly paid smear merchants who once also targeted him.

"They try and promote themselves as a sort of opposition research or strategic intelligence firm when really what Fusion GPS is, it's a company that sells itself to the highest bidder to bring together smear campaigns and to try and destroy honest, good people who are going against their clients," Halvorssen explained on Tucker Carlson Tonight.

"In my particular case, it was whistleblowing against a group of criminal Venezuelans operating a company called Derwick Associates that sold twelve faulty electric plants in Venezuela," the activist continued. "They had no experience before, they had nothing to do with the sector and yet they got $3 billion worth of business in Venezuela of which they skimmed around $2 billion. And then they hired Fusion GPS to go after those of us who were opposing them and blowing the whistle on them."

"Personally?" Carlson asked.

"Very personal," answered Halvorssen. "Imagine waking up one day and seeing a headline in a fringe website that says that I'm a neocon scam artist and then you read the actual article and it says that I -- there in some Facebook posts and Twitter posts that they put out -- it says falsely says that I sleep with children, it says that I'm a heroin addict, it says that I've been to rehab, it says that I'm an embezzler..."

(Here is an example of the trash that was posted about him at a left-wing site. Here is a much better article about Halvorssen by Matt Labash at the Weekly Standard: "Troublemaker for Tyrants.")

"Imagine accusations that are so horrible that being innocent isn't enough. Accusations so horrible you can't explain them. That's what Fusion GPS -- specializes in!" he declared.

Halvorssen went on to say that Fusion did the same thing to an investigative blogger in London who was working on the same case.

Halvorssen submitted statements to the Judiciary Committee for the record Wednesday in regards to his experience with Fusion GPS. Halvorssen alleged in his testimony that Fusion GPS suppressed news stories about its corrupt client's activities by operating "smear campaigns" against journalists who threatened to expose it:

“Corrupt government officials in dictatorships would be powerless if they didn’t have cronies in the business world, and these cronies, in turn, would be useless allies without enablers like Fusion GPS, who are eager to whitewash and profit from their crimes,” Halvorssen said. “Fusion GPS isn’t an ‘opposition research’ or a crisis communications company. Fusion GPS is a group of highly paid smear experts who function as an accessory to the crimes committed by Derwick Associates.”
