Pro-Life Leader Blasts Calif. Law That Forces Pregnancy Centers to Promote Abortions: 'Shame on Them!'

The U.S. Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will hear a pro-life group’s free speech challenge to a draconian California law that requires crisis pregnancy centers to notify patients that the state offers subsidies for contraception and abortion.

Tom Glessner, president and CEO of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, said his group is taking the case to the Supreme Court because the law violates both free speech and religious freedom.

“In essence, the law mandates that pro-life centers become abortion referral agencies, totally against their convictions, against their foundational beliefs, compelling speech,” Glessner said.

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson had Glessner on his show to talk about the case Wednesday night.

“The issue before the court is, can the government be empowered to force a charitable, faith-based non-profit (or for that matter — any group) to speak a message with which they fundamentally disagree — and if they fail to comply, fine them, issue penalties and even close them down?” Glessner began. “Because that’s what they’re trying to do in California to pro-life pregnancy centers.”

Carlson pointed out that the Orwellian-named law —  The Freedom Accountability Comprehensive Care and Transparency Act —  has “no freedom in it.”

Tucker continued: “It would force pro-life centers to literally advertise — and tell people who come in — ‘hey, there’s a free abortion waiting for you if you want one.'”

Glessner responded, “Well, not only that, it requires them to post a number to call to get the abortion process started. And this is before our centers are ever able to talk to them.”

Carlson was nonplussed. “Why would the state want to do this?” he asked. “Hassle them, force them to violate their beliefs?”

“Because the far left, which is in control in California, is so in love with abortion they cannot tolerate anybody with an opposing view and they want to mandate that they support and speak and promote their state-sponsored abortion agenda,” Glessner answered. “That’s the bottom line.”

Carlson said, “This is really about an industry trying to shut down its opponents.”

“It’s about a multi-million dollar industry — actually maybe a billion dollar industry — Planned Parenthood gets $500 million of federal funds — imposing their will on small, charitable, life-affirming agencies that have very little money and staffed primarily by volunteers,” Glessner added. “Shame on them! This is just bullying tactics.”
