Hysterical Authoritarian 'Expert' Warns That Time Is Running Out for America Under Trump

You've probably noticed a dramatic uptick in anti-Trump hysteria since the president's acquittal. In fact, if you were to believe a lot of these headlines, it would be time to build a bomb shelter or flee to Canada.

"Trump and Barr Are Out of Control"-- New York Times

"This is a revolting assault on the fragile rule of law" -- Washington Post

"‘Really shocking’: Trump's meddling in Stone case stuns Washington" -- Politico

"Trump is taking a sledgehammer to judicial independence" -- The Guardian

"Schiff says Trump is making a 'direct attack' on rule of law: 'It's all out in the open'" -- CNN

We are all going to die...or something.

It doesn't stop there. Business Insider writer John Haltiwanger upped the hysteria level to a fever pitch with this hit piece that claims authoritarian "experts" (?) say that "time is running out" for Americans to stop Trump and nothing less than "mass protests" are needed to save the republic.

If Americans are concerned that President Donald Trump and Republicans are moving the US toward becoming a one-party, authoritarian state, they are running out of time to stop them, experts warned.

The only Americans concerned about this impossibility are fantasists like the author whose paranoia has driven him insane.

The president has attacked virtually every democratic institution in the US when he's felt its actions were unfavorable to his agenda or public appearance. Meanwhile, he pushed traditional US allies away while  openly embracing many of the world's most repressive leaders.

These trends have raised concern among top experts on authoritarianism, fascism, and democracy, but they've often said that the robust political system in the US, with its checks and balances and constitutional norms, has prevented Trump from becoming a full-blown authoritarian and doing whatever he wants.

Are those "democratic institutions" that Trump is attacking still standing? Of course they are. You want authoritarianism, try Hitler and Mao banning political parties or Stalin changing history on a regular basis. That's real authoritarianism. Destroying labor unions and independent businesses is authoritarianism. Throwing reporters in jail, shutting down newspapers and TV stations, darkening websites -- this is authoritarianism.

Not Trump calling CNN reporters poopy-heads.

"There need to be mass protests," he said. "The Republican Party is betraying democracy, and these are historical times. Someone has got to push back."

"The deeply worrying moment is when you start to become a one-party state," Stanley added. "The Republican Party has shown that it has no interest in multi-party democracy ... They are much more concerned with power, with consolidating power."

Of course, Democrats don't want to control the House, the Senate, the White House, the judiciary, and access to women's bathrooms for women with penises. They are far too noble. They eschew power and aren't even concerned with winning elections, right?

Sheesh.

Anti-Trump hysteria skews reality, creates paranoia, and allows leftists to engage in flights of fancy that play to their self-image as saviors of America. They stand, bloodied, on the battlements waving their bloody shirts to protest this fall into totalitarianism that America is threatened with. And they think that everyone is itching to join them.

Thus has it always been so with the American left. Anyone who disagrees with them is a threat to democracy. If you laugh at them, they don't understand. Whatever objectivity there is won't be found with people who think America is so fragile that it can't survive an ignoramus as president.
