Hollywood Isn't Going to Deal With Weinstein, It's Going to Erase Him

Harvey Weinstein

After the Harvey Weinstein story went nuclear today when Ronan Farrow published a damning expose in The New Yorker, the floodgates seemed to open for people in Hollywood to finally condemn him.

Maybe not so much.

Farrow works for NBC News, yet he had to publish his investigative report via The New Yorker. He was asked by Rachel Maddow — on another NBC News entity — why that was:

Apparently not everyone is in quick-condemnation mode yet.

Hours later, this little bomb was dropped:

Weinstein may very well be headed to rehab, or he may just be fleeing for permanent exile like Roman Polanski.

Now The Huffington Post is reporting that Weinstein’s name is being removed from the television shows he’s listed as a producer on:

The name Harvey Weinstein is being purged from Hollywood.

On Monday, Deadline reported that The Weinstein Company is removing Weinstein’s executive producer credit from any TV series he’s worked on, and plans to wipe it from upcoming movie releases.

The outlet also reports that TWC is auditioning ad agencies to change its company name altogether.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that TWC reached out to multiple networks and gave them the green light to scrub his credits in the wake of the bombshell New York Times report that revealed Weinstein had settled at least eight sexual harassment claims throughout his career.

It is understandable that all who were involved with Weinstein are horrified–or maybe just embarrassed they all got caught covering for him–and want to distance themselves as much as possible.  This all has the feel of make-believe though.

Even Polanski’s name is still on all of his projects.

Hollywood probably wants to pretend Weinstein never existed because so many of them were complicit in what he did over the years. As more of the details of this disturbing  tale come out, it becomes more and more apparent that a lot of people knew what he was up to. Perhaps many of them feel that some of their you-know-whats can be saved if they begin playing “out of sight, out of mind” sooner rather than later.

They’ll need help from their friends in the media, of course:

Looks like they are already getting it.
