Argentine President Mauricio Macri and First Lady Juliana Awada visited with Trump to discuss enhancing relations between countries, as well as issues concerning trade, security, and Venezuela’s economic and political crisis. Macri has apparently been friendly with Trump since their days as businessmen.
Trump called Macri “my good friend for many years” during the Oval Office media photo opportunity, adding that the two were acquainted long before they entered politics.
“Who would have thought this was going to happen?” Trump marveled, as Macri nodded his head in agreement and smiled.
“This is a great, wonderful person and he will be a great president of Argentina,” Trump said. “I have absolutely no doubt.” Macri assumed office in December of 2015.
An important issue on the agenda today was lemons because the Trump administration recently suspended a decision negotiated by former President Barack Obama to end a 16-year ban on the import of lemons from Argentina.
“I know all about the lemons,” Trump told reporters. “We are reviewing that very seriously. We’re going to be very favorably disposed.”
“I’ll tell him about North Korea and he’ll tell me about lemons,” the president quipped.
