Next week, the House of Representatives will vote on a counter-terrorism package that will also include a provision to prevent terrorists from buying guns, according to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Ryan spoke about his plans for the legislation on a phone call Thursday morning.
The House will also vote on a mental health bill.
Ryan’s decision comes a week after Democrats disrupted House activities in a nearly 26-hour sit-in demanding action on gun control. It’s unclear whether Ryan’s proposal would include the broad “no fly, no buy” proposal Democrats have supported or a more limited version endorsed by the National Rifle Association.
Roll Call says of the phone call: Ryan asserted “it [is] common sense that suspects on terror watch lists not be able to buy guns, but he wants to be sure that any provision protects due process for people who may mistakenly be added to such lists.”
Democrats plan on continuing their protests when Congress returns next week, so House GOP leaders are figuring out how to proceed, Ryan said on the call.
Roll Call also reported: “Ryan told his colleagues that they are getting recommendations from the sergeant-at-arms and the parliamentarians, and that House Republicans will take any actions they deem necessary, according to the source on the call.”
Speaker Ryan is in charge of the House; he doesn’t need to bring any “gun bill” to the floor. He refused to do this last week which spawned the Democrats’ tantrum on the House floor. I can only conclude that Speaker Ryan and the House GOP are afraid of the Democrats. People are growing sick of being sold out by their representatives. It’s clear the GOP leadership has learned nothing from the party’s presidential primary.
