San Bernardino Candidate Issues 'ISIS Hunting Permit'

A "permit" released by the campaign of Paul Chabot, San Bernardino County Reserve Deputy Sheriff.

A military officer and deputy sheriff running for Congress representing San Bernardino has offered an “ISIS Hunting Permit” to supporters of his campaign. The mock permit allows supporters to attack members of various terrorist groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), as well as Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and Boko Haram.

The license has no legal authority, but may be a very good ploy for a candidate running to represent the city of San Bernardino in the United States Congress. Paul Roger Chabot, the candidate behind the hunting permit, serves as San Bernardino County reserve deputy sheriff, as well as a lieutenant commander of naval intelligence with the U.S. Navy Reserve.

“As a Lt. Commander and Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves, I’ve spent years working to stop Islamic terrorists — on deployment to Iraq, at the Pentagon, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and in cooperation with out Joint Special Operations Forces,” Chabot wrote in an email to supporters on Saturday.

“But when the reality of Islamic terror exploded with deadly effect right here in San Bernardino, my commitment to defeating ISIS and any other terror group that seeks to destroy America rose to a whole other level.”

In addition to his service with the Navy Reserves and in local law enforcement, Chabot served as a White House senior policy advisor on law enforcement for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He ran to represent California’s 31st congressional district in 2014, but was narrowly defeated by Democrat Pete Aguilar, 51.4 percent to 48.6 percent.

Following the terror attacks in San Bernardino last year, however, Chabot should enjoy a stronger position this November, if he wins the Republican nomination in the primary on June 7. He faces former Democratic Congressman Joe Baca and Sean Flynn, an insurgent candidate. Chabot’s list of endorsements is quite impressive, including many law enforcement and veterans’ organizations. He also touts the endorsement of former Ambassador John Bolton and Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family.

The 31st congressional district will be one to watch on June 7, and in November.
