Joe McQuaid, publisher of New Hampshire’s largest newspaper, claims that Chris Christie once vowed to him that he would never endorse his former rival, Donald Trump. McQuaid said in an interview with Politico Friday that he is disappointed that Christie has chosen to throw his weight behind Trump after his paper, the Union Leader, had endorsed the New Jersey governor.

McQuaid said after Christie ended his campaign and rumors started spreading about a possible Trump endorsement, “I sent a message off to Gov. Christie and he called me back and I told him what I’d heard and he said, ‘No, no, I would never do that.'”

“[Christie] told me to tell the other guy to ‘take his head out of his ass’ for saying he would support Trump,” he added of his mutual acquaintance with Christie.

McQuaid added that his publication, The New Hampshire Union Leader, has no intention of transferring its endorsement of Christie to Trump.

Christie’s  endorsement shocked the political world Friday because he had only recently mocked and attacked Trump while on the campaign trail, calling him  “a childish whiner” with “ridiculous and dangerous ideas” who is running “for entertainer-in-chief,” etc.
