Democrats Disapprove People's Choice for Annapolis Mayor

I wish I could write that this is unbelievable, but it’s not unbelievable at all. Your typical Democrat harbors nothing but contempt for Republicans, and disdains the idea that free people might want to choose to elect a Republican or associate with the GOP once in a while.

Today’s case in point is Annapolis, MD, which hadn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1997. Last week it elected Republican Mike Pantelides over the Democrat incumbent. This week, the city’s Democrats are moving quickly to strip the new mayor of the office’s powers.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Days after a Republican was elected mayor of Annapolis, City Council members say they will revisit legislation that would strip the mayor’s office of much of its power.

Democratic Alderman Ross Arnett of Ward 8 tells The Capital he will introduce a charter amendment to move Annapolis to a council-manager style of government. The city manager would report directly to the City Council, not the mayor.

Under Arnett’s legislation, the mayor’s post would be largely ceremonial.

If this succeeds, the mayor’s power won’t be the only thing in Annapolis that’s largely ceremonial. The people’s vote will have been made ceremonial too.
