Those “moderate” Egyptian Islamists sure are a compassionate bunch. It seems they want to tweak the laws covering women’s rights, as well as grant some, well, unusual rights to husbands regarding post-mortem conjugal bliss.
Egyptian husbands will soon be legally allowed to have sex with their dead wives – for up to six hours after their death.
The controversial new law is part of a raft of measures being introduced by the Islamist-dominated parliament.
It will also see the minimum age of marriage lowered to 14 and the ridding of women’s rights of getting education and employment.
Keeping them in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant is one thing. But allowing a man to continue enjoying his dead wife’s affections up to six hours after she is freed from her Islamist husband’s chains adds insult to injury.
Necrophilia has its advantages, of course. You don’t have to beat your spouse because she denies you your “rights” as a husband.
The subject of a husband having sex with his dead wife arose in May 2011 when Moroccan cleric Zamzami Abdul Bari said marriage remains valid even after death.
He also said that women have the right to have sex with her dead husband, alarabiya.net reported.
It seems the topic, which has sparked outrage, has now been picked up on by Egypt’s politicians.
I guess this is their idea of “equal rights.”
Some of the people who will be voting for this law visited the White House a couple of weeks ago. Maybe NOW and other women’s rights groups in America might want to ask the president if press secretary Jay Carney’s statement on the visit still holds. Said Carney:
“Because of the fact that Egypt’s political landscape has changed, the actors have become more diverse and our engagement reflects that. The point is that we will judge Egypt’s political actors by how they act — not by their religious affiliation.”
