Our national anthem is a song that means so much to all patriotic Americans. The “Star-Spangled Banner” sparks emotions of honor and devotion in American citizens and has been an anthem of hope and resolve since it was written as a poem in 1814 by Francis Scott Key.
To show our respect for our beloved country, it is customary to stand during the anthem and put your hand over your heart as a sign of respect for our flag and our nation. As Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players continue to disrespect our country and boycott our anthem, one little boy in Michigan did just the opposite.
Rebecca Wilson of Chesterfield, Michigan, shared a video of her 9-year-old son, Logan, who has cerebral palsy, trying to stand for our national anthem while watching a baseball game they had on their DVR. Logan claps, tries to sing along, and even cheers when the crowd does, all with a big smile on his face.
Since her son doesn’t normally walk unless he is using his medical equipment, she wanted to capture the moment on video. Wilson watched in amazement, saying, “He always takes off his hat, but until yesterday I never really saw him try to stand. He just knew that is what we do to show respect to our country and everyone who fights so hard for us. He is truly just an amazing kid just doing what he loves.”
Wilson captioned the video on Facebook: “Even my 9 year old with CP (who can’t walk) knows you’re supposed to stand up during the national anthem…He loves it!”
Mom does admit that her caption is a direct message to the athletes who are refusing to stand for our anthem, saying: “In my opinion, I believe they are not only disrespecting their own country, a country that affords them the right to do what they did, but also disrespecting all the people who fight for this country. I do not disagree with their reasons for doing what they did, I disagree with the actions they took.”
Way to go, Logan! We are proud of you!
