15 Quotes from Your Parents You Swore You'd Never Say

Sometimes it’s inevitable in life. No matter how hard we try to avoid it or how much we swore it never would happen, out come our parents! We find ourselves saying exactly what they said to us when we were kids, and frankly, it’s downright scary. Here are some quotes our parents said to us that just seem to slip out when we’re talking to our kids:

1. “Don’t make me turn the car around!”

My sisters and I would be acting up in the back seat of the car and all dad had to do was say this. We’d straighten up — with a smile!

Every time my sister and I would make faces at each other, this was sure to be said by my mum. Guess what? My face never froze that way.

3. “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.”

My parents and grandparents hated when we would waste food. I was notorious for taking too much at the dinner table.

Dad would fall asleep on the couch watching “Wide World of Sports” every Saturday afternoon. This is what he would say so nobody would know he was really sleeping.

No matter what we were doing, my mum would always find out! I truly believe she has eyes in the back of her head — to this very day.

7. “If everyone was jumping off a bridge, would you?”

I don’t know how many times I heard this from my parents. This was their subtle way of saying, “Be an individual.’

8. “You are so full of *hit, your eyes are turning brown!”

Yeah, this one was awesome. My parents could tell right away if you were telling a lie. This one I don’t use today, even though it makes me laugh.

9. “Because I said so.”

What? As a kid, I hated this reasoning. Why can’t I do it? That isn’t a reason at all. Give me just one reason!

10. “How many times do I have to tell you?”

Apparently they had to tell us a lot, because we heard this saying nearly everyday.

11. “I have had it up to here with you kids!”

OMG, I’m gonna die. Usually “up to here” meant up to my dad’s eyeballs. Once it was over his head, you’d better run!

12. “Do you want something to cry about?”

You heard this little ditty whenever you were crying for no reason, or if you got hit by your sibling.

13. “When we were kids, we walked to school in 10 feet of snow.”

I guess this quote was supposed to give us an appreciation for school buses? We heard it on multiple occasions.

14. “When you get your own home, you can do whatever you want.”

As long as you live under mom and dad’s roof, you will do your chores. And don’t even think about having a party when they are out of town.

15. “One day you will have a child just like you and it will be payback time.”

Well, I have children and thank goodness they have a mom who was raised by parents who were tough, but loving. My upbringing was fabulous, and it gave me the tools to raise really great kids the old-school way.
