Texas Man Arrested for Showing Porn to His Stepdaughter

A Texas man was arrested after showing pornographic videos to his 17-year-old stepdaughter to improve her view of sex in relationships.

Specific names are not being released of the man or his stepdaughter—to protect the identity of the teen involved—but it is known that he is a 57-year-old resident of Grapevine, Texas. The Star-Telegram reports that he now faces “a charge of sale/distribution/display of harmful material to a minor, a Class A misdemeanor.”

These “sex education” lessons began in August 2016, shortly after the teen entered into a dating relationship. It began with two “soft romantic porn” videos, according to the arrest warrant affidavit. In what appears to be an attempt to keep the teen’s mother from knowing what he was doing, the man “showed the videos at night as her mother slept in a bedroom.” He went as far as to "raise the volume on the television in the living room” and then called his stepdaughter into his office to view the pornography.

These videos were employed after the man’s stepdaughter told him that she never wanted to have sex. He claims that he “became concerned with her comments because during his first marriage, his wife had an issue with having sex … He didn’t want [his stepdaughter] to suffer from the same issues his ex-wife did.”

In December the teenager, who is now 18, contacted the police with the support of her biological father. She told them “that her stepfather had been showing her pornographic videos on his desktop computer since August 2016.” She estimated that her stepfather “showed her porn videos six to eight times” in the five months prior, stating that he also showed the teen “a topless photo of her mother.”

The teen told a detective that she “explained to her stepfather that it was uncomfortable to watch those types of videos with him,” but that did not stop the man from continuing to show her pornography.

The girl’s mother confronted the man on these accusations and “he admitted to showing the videos on two occasions,” according to a January interview with the police. The man surrendered himself to police officers in February “after a warrant was issued,” according to Daily Mail Online.

These awful acts certainly call into question our society’s view of porn. Pornography used to be something you had to drive to a seedy store to purchase. You hoped no one saw your car out front while you spent time inside selecting a magazine or video and you looked a cashier in the eyes to pay for a limited number of sexually explicit images. Today, every person with a smartphone in their pocket is seconds away from any sexual image they can imagine—and more.
