Amazon's Alexa Mistakes Children's Song for Porn Request

Technology is a beautiful thing. The innovations over the last few years have made life incredibly convenient. Who would have thought, just a few decades ago, that a single device no bigger than our hands would make phone calls, take pictures and videos, play music and quite literally connect us to the rest of the world. It's the stuff of science fiction movies, really. But some of the most fun (albeit unnecessary?) toys to hit the market are the voice-activated "assistants." Amazon Alexa, I'm talking to you.

The futuristic "artificial intelligence helper" that runs on the Echo Dot smart speaker can control your whole house. Just address her by name, and she can change the temperature in the room, play you a song, give you the weather forecast, track packages, order you a Domino's pizza or call you an Uber. She's like Siri on speed.

Unsurprisingly, when you take Alexa out of the box, you're bound to have a little fun with her until the novelty wears off. That's what one family did after opening their very own for Christmas. The toddler of the family innocently asked his new virtual assistant to play "Digger, Digger." (I have a toddler of my own and recognized this immediately as "Twinkle Twinkle," but based on what happened next, my guess is that Alexa is not a mother to small children...)

Instead of queuing up the popular children's song, Alexa gave the family a run for their money.

The New York Post reports:

“You want to hear a station for porn,” Alexa replied before unspooling a string of filthy terms, beginning with “hot chick, amateur girl” and descending into a slew of unprintables.

The child’s panicked family rushed to shut off the device, with one exclaiming, “Alexa, stop!”

The video, titled “Amazon Alexa Gone Wild,” had been played on YouTube more than 500,000 times as of Friday afternoon, putting it at No. 4 on the site’s trending list.

Amazon said it had contacted the family to apologize. The glitch has been fixed, according to a spokesperson, and Amazon is “working to build additional restrictions to prevent this from happening in the future.”
