'Miss Sloane' Trailer: Hollywood's Latest Gun Control Cry

She’s not just any lobbyist. She’s … Miss Sloane.

And she’s coming for your guns.

Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain stars in the upcoming movie. The actress plays a lobbyist trying to get a background-check bill through the U.S. Senate. By any means necessary, apparently.

Any guesses as to who stands in her way?

The film, out Dec. 9, arrives in the thick of Oscar movie season. That doesn’t guarantee any awards. Still, since the vast majority of film critics lean to the left, expect reviews that lavish praise on its gun control theme, if nothing else.

Chastain is already playing coy with the film’s message.

“Gun control is divisive because some people are immediately afraid that it’s a kind of confiscation,” she says. “And people who hear that in regards to this film will think it’s a plant to move them in one direction.” She pauses. “It’s not.”

It’s also divisive because so often the results simply don’t exist. Consider the gun wars a-blazing in Chicago, a city with strict gun control measures, as Exhibit A. Or how often massacres occur in gun-free zones.

The “Miss Sloane” trailer, with its over-the-top line readings, suggests Chastain isn’t being fully honest with audiences.

“There’s over five million of us … and we’re armed,” one character says. Is it safe to say he has Miss Sloane in his cross hairs, rhetorically speaking of course.

The film’s official synopsis keeps the gun control theme under wraps:

MISS SLOANE is the story of a ruthless lobbyist (Jessica Chastain) who is notorious for her unparalleled talent and her desire to win at all costs, even when it puts her own career at risk. The thriller pulls back the curtain on how Capitol Hill games are played and won as Sloane faces off against the most influential powers in D.C.

If, as anticipated, the film excoriates gun rights advocates, it won’t be alone. Hollywood has been churning out pro-gun control content for some time. Consider the various PSAs clamoring for more gun restrictions in recent years.

Heck, Amy Schumer alone is on a one-woman crusade to bring more gun control laws to the nation. She teamed up with her cousin, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, to push more gun control legislation.

She doesn’t always get her facts straight, though.

So we’ve seen PSAs, comedy sketches and outright pleas for more gun laws via Hollywood. Meanwhile, the industry winces whenever someone mentions how much it profits off of embracing gun violence to sell movie tickets.

Still, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood’s gun control fight took on narrative form.
